Designer Pallavi Jaikishan talks about the changes in the fashion industry and moving forward

Completing 40 years in the industry, veteran designer Pallavi Jaikishan has much to celebrate. And to commemorate this special year, she’s decided to participate in as many shows as possible, choosing to start with her debut at the Mumbai fashion week. “When I began, there were no boutiques and everyone had to source their own fabrics and approach their own darzi. I learnt by trial and error… Today designers, have it much more easy. Participating in a fashion week is enough to make you a recognised name,” explains Pallavi. The designer showcased her collection in association with Sajala. Friday night saw four collections boasting of hand embroideries combined with modern bridal silhouettes. Her line comprised — lehengas, saris and tunics with hand-embroidered and real zari work with modern silhouettes — ideal for a destination wedding. Interestingly, Pallavi designed her own jewellery for the show.
Suhas Sankalp, Chairman, Sankalp group said, “Pallavi has a class and maturity to her and her garments spell richness and luxury. Though we only met a few times prior to this, her collection remains a class apart.”
While actor Neha Dhupia came to support Pallavi, the designer herself doesn’t believe in using celebrity showstoppers. She says, “If you have enough confidence in your clothes, they can stand on their own feet. I’ve never used who I’ve dressed to go ahead.” Her milestone year will also be marked by her book which she’s currently working on. It will capture her fashion policy, beautiful designs, a segment on her old works and much more. Finally, would Pallavi like to venture into Bollywood film styling today? “I have worked with Sharmila Tagore and even Mumtaz in her last movie. It is a nice challenge, so yes I am open to trying it out once again.”
