Designer Gaurav Gupta, who’ll be styling international pop singer Lady GaGa, also reveals why he avoids having celebrities on the ramp

Barely six years since he debuted his label at the Delhi fashion week, designer Gaurav Gupta has managed to earn laurels both on the international platform as well as at home. Often commended for reinventing the sari, the designer says he has stood out for his different designs. “I don’t follow any trends. I get bored easily by things that have been around. Hence, I put my own spin on jacket dresses, saris and kurtas by deconstructing them and making them more suited for the modern environment,” he says. Gaurav believes that while the traditional sari will never go out of style, women of all ages want a more wearable and glamorous take on the garment.
The designer, who’s mainly showcased at the Delhi fashion week, says he’s not averse to showing in Mumbai. “I started in the capital, and have a set of buyers there, so it makes sense to continue there. I’ve never had a celebrity showstopper as I think it’s a marketing gimmick. It’s more about drama. I believe the garments should speak louder than the personality,” he says adding that he continues to style many actors who are his friends.
Internationally too, he’s much in demand and recently dressed singer Estelle for the BET awards celebration dinner, actor Katerina Graham and Janina Gavankar among others. “I’ve tied up with a US-based agency for my Hollywood styling. Soon I’ll be dressing singer Lady GaGa as well as Britney Spears. My dream would be to design for someone like actor Kate Winslet or even Sridevi,” he adds excited. Gaurav was also the only Indian featured in a documentary by the British government which was screened at the London Olympics 2012.
The designer continues to expand his skills and has now ventured into designing jewellery, as well as smartphone covers, laptop sleeves and shoes. “Every designer has their own sensibility and mine extends to all aspects. I’d love to get into interiors and furniture design at some point,” adds Gaurav who for now has his plate full with his London store opening, upcoming fashion week and styling assignments.
