Lenovo unveils ThinkPad Tablet 2 with Windows 8 Pro

Lenovo recently unveiled a new tablet that will run on Windows 8 Pro. Powered by an Atom processor, the Thinkpad Tablet 2 will be released in October, sometime around the Windows 8 launch date. According to a report by ArsTechnica, the tablet will feature a stylus, an optional dock, and an optional ThinkPad-style keyboard complete with TrackPoint nub.

The Thinkpad Tablet 2 will succeed the currently available Thinkpad Tablet, which runs on an ARM processor and Android OS. As reported by Engadget, the tablet will include a 1366 x 768 IPS display, a 64GB solid state drive, 2GB of RAM, a 10-hour battery, optional 3G/ 4G, micro-HDMI output, and a pair of 2MP/ 8MP cameras, NFC, a fingerprint reader, and an Ethernet jack. The tablet will pack all of these within a thickness of 9.8 mm, and will weigh around 589 grams. The ArsTechnica report stated that the Tablet 2 will be running new 32nm Atom processors (codenamed Clover Trail) optimized for use in tablets. "Clover Trail is directly related to the Medfield processors we saw pop up in Android phones like the Xolo X900 earlier this year, but a second processor core and a more powerful PowerVR SGX 544MP2 GPU add some extra oomph for the larger form factor," the report added.

The configuration of this laptop is not very impressive. However, as it runs on the x86 architecture, it will support all x86-compatible applications. This capability will enable it to run standard Windows applications, making the Tablet 2 a worthy opponent to the Apple iPad, which is currently the market leader in this segment.

According to a report by The Verge, Lenovo is planning to position this tablet as a business-oriented device to compete against the iPad, like they did with its predecessor.

The original Thinkpad Tablet came with Honeycomb and featured advanced security tools such as data encryption, corporate email, digitizer pen, integrated cloud sharing and some built-in productivity apps such as Documents-to-go and PrinterShare. The Thinkpad Tablet was launched in India in three versions: Wi-Fi only for Rs. 29,500; 32GB 3G for Rs. 41,900; and 64GB 3G version for Rs. 46,900.

The specifications of the Thinkpad Tablet are:
•    Android 3.1 Honeycomb running on a 1GHz Tegra 2 processor
•    10.1-inch IPS capacitive touchscreen (Gorilla glass) with a 800 x 1280 pixel resolution
•    3G, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi
•    GPS with A-GPS Support
•    Bluetooth and USB 2.0
•    Up to 32GB internal storage, Memory expandable via microSD card reader
