If you thought that festive shopping is just for the women, think twice! With just a day left for Durga Puja, men are going to city markets to find some apt clothing for the festivities. The puja is one such occasion where men can wear some traditional clothing that looks totally Bangalee. Kurtas are a rage among Bengali men, especially during Durga puja. Fabric painted kurtas in vibrant colours like yellow and orange are very popular. Mithu Sil, owner of Kolkata Kollection, Seawoods, has a stunning collection of designer kurtas for men. “I have kurtas with fabric paintings. There are some special ones with motifs stitched on the kurta that looks festive. The ones with the motifs are adorned with faces of Maa Durga, Chandmala, Ghat with coconut, etc. These are all specially designed kurtas for the season and are made only in Kolkata,” said Sil. Bengalis like bright colours and bold designs that stand out. Another kurta lover Asit Ghosh, president of Bengal Trust, says that you can’t separate Bengalis and kurtas. “I love wearing dhoti-kurtas and always try to don it whenever for special occasions especially Durga puja. They look very special and also complement the festive spirit,” Ghosh said. Most of these kurtas come in cotton, however, there are some special ones in tussar or pure silk adorned with kantha stitch or embroidery work. There are various families who buy these kurtas from Kolkata. One such Bengali is Deep Sanyal, resident of Kharghar, who has bought seven such designer kurtas when he visited Kolkata this summer. “I bought three fabric painted ones in cotton, silk and a dhoti in tussar with fancy motifs stitched on it,” he said. Vashi resident Sumana Dhir has also bought two designer kurtas for her father. “The best part is that since the kurtas are in cotton it can easily beat the October heat and the men will end up sweating less. These kurtas look fabulous and are comfortable too,” said Dhir.
