how to combat feelings of jealousy?

Dealing with the green monster

Do you often go green with envy of anyone who’s blessed by Lady Luck? Here’s how to combat feelings of jealousy

Feeling jealous is a human tendency. Whether you are jealous of your neighbour’s new car, a relative’s newly purchased apartment, a sibling’s Europe vacation or, simply, a friend’s hot girlfriend/boyfriend. However, if jealousy strikes you every time anything good happens to others, it’s time to tame the green monster. You don’t want to end up being a monster literally, by doing bad things to those around you. The following list of advice will help you control jealousy:

KEEP AWAY TEMPORARILY

If you can’t help but feel overwhelmed with feelings of jealousy, stay away from the person for a while. Being around him/her might fuel the feelings, leading to something nasty like a verbal spat or a broken relationship.

PLACE YOURSELF IN HIS/HER SHOE

Sometimes, when we are jealous of someone, they are not aware of it. At times, he/she doesn’t know why your attitude towards him/her has changed. Try to place yourself in his/her shoes. Wouldn’t you like others to be happy for you?

ACCEPT THE TRUTH

Firstly, you need to accept that you tend to be jealous of others. So, when a friend points it out to you, accept the fact and say you’re working on it. There’s no point being defensive or denying.
LEARN FROM OTHERS

If you’re jealous of somebody’s achievements, try to achieve the same or something similar on your own. Brooding over someone else’s success doesn’t help.

THINK POSITIVE

If you’re constantly going to fuss over other people’s achievements or good luck, you’re just weaving a web of negativity around yourself. Think about your strengths and weaknesses, and focus on your strengths. Think about how you can better yourself and achieve success with the means you already have.

STOP COMPARING
YOURSELF WITH
OTHERS

We compare ourselves with others too much. One has to understand that every individual is different and so is their life. Some people are plain lucky and taste success early in life, while, for others, it comes late. You are no one to decide what others get in life.
