Mumbai: It's official. The
price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has been hiked by Rs 4.50kg in
Mumbai and piped cooking gas will be dearer by Rs 2.49 per unit from
Saturday . This means, the revised price of CNG will be Rs 43.45kg and

price hike will burden six lakh households in the Mumbai metropolitan
region, the rise in CNG price--one of the highest in recent years--will
affect 20 lakh regular bus, autorickshaw and taxi commuters, and nearly
three lakh car owners.
The BEST has already announced plans to hike fares by Rs 1-2 from April 2015 irrespective of the CNG hike. Autorickshaw and taxi fares were recently hiked by Rs 2, and with the CNG hike, Mumbaikars can expect another fare hike in April next year.
Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) has also changed the slabs for PNG this time, which could mitigate the impact of the hike. While slab 1 is being revised from up to 0.50 scmd (standard cubic metre daily) to up to 1.2 scmd, the slab 2 is being revised to 1.2-2 from 0.50-0.90, sources said.
On Thursday , TOI had reported that CNG and PNG rates in Mumbai are likely to rise after November 1 when the Centre increases domes tic natural gas prices. An MGL official said, “There has been a significant increase in our gas purchase costs due to recent revision of domestic natural gas prices by the Centre.“ It had shot up from $4.20 per mmBTU to about $5.61 per mmBTU. The official added, “Even after the revision, CNG presents an attractive customer proposition and costs about 60% and 32% less than petrol and diesel respectively at current price levels in Mumbai.“
The prices of CNG and PNG will also go up in Thane, Navi Mumbai, Mira Road, Ambernath and KhargharPanvel areas after taking into account the local taxes and cess rates.
