Classic eyewear buys...

Classic eyewear buys...

With the biopic on one of the coolest bespectacled icons of our times, Steve Jobs, having recently hit the screens, we check out some timeless classic eyewear that have made a comeback in recent times.
Spectacles were considered to be a handicap for a long time. And the nerds who wore them were stereotyped as un-cool folks with a penchant for orthodox, thickset eyewear and useless trivia. However, with the nerds turning the tables on the mainstream and nostalgia hitting the fashion scenes in a big way, classic eyewear is hip again.

JACQUELINE ONASSIS KENNEDY

The American first lady became a fashion icon after her husband stepped into office and went for a serious style makeover that inspired the nation in a big way. Her iconic dark, round sunglasses became a rage then and they remain so. Some of the world’s biggest brands stock various versions of the original frame she wore, but the classic model still remains among the most sought-after frames in women’s eyewear.

JOHN LENNON
An icon of the sixties counterculture, John Lennon possessed a strong individual style that inspired many a fashion icon after him. He made the regular round eyewear so famous that the classic frames called “Teashades” or “Grandma Glasses” were renamed as the “John Lennon” glasses. Not readily available now, you can mostly find a pair in a costume or party shop or, if you’re lucky, a flea market!

AUDREY HEPBURN
One of the biggest celluloid-fashion mysteries remains whether Audrey Hepburn wore Wayfarers or Manhattan sunglasses in Breakfast At Tiffany’s; arguably the most recognised film role in her career. The mystery of the exact model notwithstanding, her thick, big frames became iconic and has stayed in vogue until today with celebrities like Kate Moss and Lady Gaga being partial towards the classic dark frames.

STEVE JOBS
The perfectly round three-piece rimless frame is a great example of the minimal style that Steve Jobs came to be known for. Being a ruthless perfectionist, Jobs only made minor adjustments to the stem of the already perfect frames to make them stronger. After his death in 2012, the sales of the $450 eyeglasses were the highest that the company ever recorded. Today they are as popular as the guy who made them famous. Readily available online or in local stores the glasses are a
great mix of urban perfection with old world charm.

WOODY ALLEN
The revival in nerdy, darkrimmed glasses across the board cannot be pinned down on one personality altogether. However, ever since Allan Stewart Konigsberg became Woody Allen, the funny-man hasn’t changed his style one bit and the thick faux-square rims have stayed. They’re specially a favourite with hipsters all over the world.

MAHATMA GANDHI
The glasses that Mahatma Gandhi wore became so famous that a silhouette is all that is needed to pick them out. Made in Gloucester, England, Gandhi’s glasses were fullrimmed and with ear-hooks at the end of the stent to hold them in place. In fact, Steve Jobs was so inspired by Gandhi’s minimal aesthetic that he took on the style. Also, last year, a pair of the Mahatma’s spectacles were sold at an auction for 34,000 British Pounds.

GET A GYM AT HOME! Here’s how to choose right the equipment for it

GET A GYM AT HOME!

Here’s how to choose right the equipment for it

Hitting that gym, even if it is in your neighbourhood, is not an easy task thanks to long working hours, exhausting commute and family commitments. At the same time, there’s no way you can ignore that expanding waistline. Such a situation has only one solution — setting up a gym at home. But of course, buying even the basic gym equipment is not simple. From lack of space to budget constraints, there are many factors to be considered. So, how do you go about it? Here’s how...

COMMON MISTAKES Setting up a gym at home doesn’t mean you go on an equipment-shopping spree. Says fitness expert Leena Mogre, “Allot space to your gym and shop accordingly. Sometimes, people end up buying too many workout machines and some of them are left unused due to lack of space.”
Fitness trainer Parikshit Somani advises against paying heed to hearsay. “You need to analyse and decide your fitness goals first. Follow it up with research on what to buy. A trainer, apart from identifying your fitness goals and planning your workouts, will also
help you purchase the right equipment. You don’t require expensive, fancy machines for a good workout. In fact, don’t be too dependent on machines. Instead, get your body movements right with the help of your trainer.”

BASIC GEAR One is spoilt for choice when it comes to buying the right equipment. The trick is not getting swayed by the look of a machine or attractive discount offers. Here’s a list of the basic gym equipment one can buy:

Treadmill

When buying, check its ability to bear a substantial amount of load, especially if you’re overweight. Also, look for smooth functioning,
a wide belt and incline options settings.

Cycle You can achieve a h i g h - i n t e n s i t y workout by increasing its re s i s t a n c e. Somani recommends a cycle for many reasons — it’s cheaper than a treadmill , occupies less space, doesn’t work on electricity and is low on maintenance.

Elliptical or Cross Trainer B e s i d e s bu r n i n g calories (it around 650 calo
ries per hour), it’s great for toning as well. The twisting action strengthens your
core. Some fitness experts even recommend this over the treadmill.

Dumbbells

Plain cardio isn’t enough. One needs strength training too, for which dumbbells are great. It’s not feasible to store an entire dumbbell rack so, dumbbells with interchangeable plates are your best bet, advises
Mogre.

Resistance bands Made of latex, they are light in weight and compact storage-wise. They can be used t o w o rk on various muscles, so they are as effective as we i g h t machines. Also, they are safer compared to
we i g h t s, when it comes to the possibility of injuries.

COST FACTOR A fairly decent collection of the above-mentioned equipment will cost around Rs 35,000. It can go upto Rs 2.5 lakh, as prices vary according to the model and brand.

CHECKLIST Mogre lists things to keep in mind:
While purchasing gym equipment, it’s important to check for its maintenance contract and the running costs.
This purchase is an investment, so invest in a good brand.
Hire a personal trainer for your workout at home. Unsupervised workouts can lead to injuries.
Seek a doctor’s permission before starting a workout regimen.
Visit a gym to familiarise yourself with various equipment and check your fitness levels before setting up one at home.
Make sure to have exercise mats, air-conditioning and a good music system to make the environment conducive to working out.

EYE INFECTIONS LIKE CONJUNCTIVITIS, DRY EYES AND EYE STY ARE VERY COMMON IN MONSOON

EYE CARE DURING RAINS

EYE INFECTIONS LIKE CONJUNCTIVITIS, DRY EYES AND EYE STY ARE VERY COMMON IN MONSOON

During monsoon, infections have a tendency to spread really fast, given the increase in the moisture content in the atmosphere. This can lead to a lot of infections, especially eye infections spread fast during the rainy season. Hence, it is essential to know about the various eye infections that occur and also learn about how to take care of your eyes if you are suffering from them.

CONJUNCTIVITIS Dr Himanshu Mehta, eye surgeon, says, “One should not use steroid-based eye drops if one has conjunctivitis. Use antibiotic-based eye drops. One must avoid wearing contact lenses if the eye is red.”
He further adds, “One must avoid going out if the eye is red as it is infectious. Maintain proper hygiene and use sanitisers to clean hands. Use sunglasses if you have conjunctivitis to avoid discomfort from bright light. Avoid eye makeup and do not share handkerchiefs and towels.”

DRY EYES Another common problem is dryness of the eyes along with burning, itching and discharge. People, who work on computers for long, will find that computer vision syndrome is aggravated in monsoon. Take frequent breaks from your computer screen. Palm your eyes and if the dryness persists, use lubricating eye drops. Rest your eyes regularly. Work in a well-lit environment to avoid straining your eyes.
Do not splash water on your eyes unnecessarily as it disturbs the tear film coating the eye ball. As opposed to the common assumption, splashing water inside your eyes washes away the tear film (protective layer) and causes dry eyes in the long run. Also there are times when tap water may contain tanker water, which can be contaminated as well.

EYE STY Eye sty is caused by bacterial infection. It is a painful lump along the eyelid. An eye sty can be treated with warm compress and proper medication.
Also, since it is windy and dusty during the monsoons, wear sunglasses to prevent dust particles from entering the eyes. Observe personal hygiene in rainy season and keep your eyes healthy.

Get festive ready

AS YOU GEAR UP FOR THE UPCOMING FESTIVE SEASON, WATCH OUT FOR THE LATEST BEAUTY TRENDS

Arpita Banerjee

As the countdown for the festive season begins, it becomes quite a task to maintain a stunning look throughout the celebrations. Festive makeup is all about fresh and glamorous looks that last for hours; is weather-proof and easy to apply. It is definitely different from your regular everyday makeup as it’s brighter with a striking and bold colour palette. Make sure that the makeup doesn’t look too loud and tacky. Here, we decode some of the latest makeup trends that will help you grab the spotlight. Read on…

LUSCIOUS LIPS Scarlet is the colour that rings in the festive season. Red, in its rich and bold hues, is a beauty staple that complements almost all skin tones. There are different shades of red lipsticks ranging from muted to dark, glossy or matte. Choose one that suits your skin tone and the colour of your lips best. When wearing red, be
sure to keep the rest of your makeup minimal. Try a light layer of foundation, black eyeliner and mascara, so that the highlight remains only on the lips. Glossy lips in peach, pink and coral are a rage this season as they give a subtle sheen to your lips. Shiny lips look best with a combination of smokey eyes; so pair the two and create a fresh and modern look. Create an even layer that is smooth and defines the shape of your lips and you are good to glow through the festive season.

EYE SPY Eye makeup is crucial as well as effective in making or breaking a look. For the festive season, nothing can beat the magic of dramatic and well-defined eyes that will make all the difference

to your personality. A sweep of kohl, a line of black or coloured eyeliner on the upper lid, and a hint of metallic highlighter in bronze or copper are some of the basics of festive eye makeup. Use a good eyelash curler and follow it up with a thick coat of mascara that can make a big difference and instantly enhance your face. These applicators are easy to use and give instant effects. If you want a smokey eye look, sweep the eye shadow all over the eyelid and smudge it gently with your fingertips. The classic smokey eye look is created with black and grey eye shadows.

SHIMMER AND SHINE Add a shimmery accent to your face to pep up instantly. Right use of shimmer can give you a sun-kissed look. Highlight your festive makeup by sweeping some shimmer powder in bronze or peach over your cheekbones, below your brow, and on the inner corner of your eyes. You can also apply a tiny bit of shimmer to give your lips a pout. Choose a hue which goes well with your skin tone.

Spreading smiles

Spreading smiles

DR SANDEEP KHANNA, periodontist and implantologist, talks to
Kavita Nair
about dental implants and their growing popularity in India

Q. IMPLANTS ARE THE LATEST IN DENTISTRY. WHAT DO YOU EXACTLY MEAN BY A DENTAL IMPLANT?
 A. It is an artificial replacement for the root portion of the natural tooth and is anchored into a predrilled socket in the jaw bone to support a crown, bridge or secure a denture firmly in place

Q. IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE GOING FOR DENTAL CORRECTIVE SURGERIES. WHAT HAS BROUGHT THIS CHANGE?
A. Smile is the first thing a person notices about you. So in today's world, where the mantra is ‘look good, feel good’, a smile plays a very important role. A good smile enhances looks and increases confidence. Awareness, exposure and constant contact with the media, social networking sites and internet have opened up minds to cosmetic corrective dental surgeries. Also with the latest developments in dentistry, we have more options like dental lasers, veneers and implants, which not only beautify the smile but also improve the function of your teeth

Q. IS THERE ANY AGE RESTRICTION WHEN IT COMES TO CORRECTING YOUR TEETH? IF YES, THEN WHAT IS THE IDEAL AGE?
A. Well, age is not really a factor. In other words, there is no age restriction for correcting your teeth. If proper care is taken, teeth generally don't fall off or decay with ageing. With the recent advancements in dentistry, we have corrective options for all age groups. Even treatments like dental implants, veneers and braces can now be done at any age. In cases where jaw bone is inadequate to place implants, procedures like bone grafting can be done. But to get optimum results, it is advisable not to wait for too long.

Q. INDIA IS EMERGING AS A DENTAL TOURISM DESTINATION. COMMENT?
A. Getting dental treatments done abroad is an expensive proposition. India is at par with the developed nations when it comes to providing dental care. We are now the first choice for dental tourism because we have extremely competent doctors and the latest technology from all over the world at affordable prices. The fact that we follow international standards for sterilization attracts and assures foreign tourists. We make special efforts to promote dental tourism as it also brings in foreign revenue to the country.

Q. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OUR READERS? A. Corrective surgical dental treatments like dental implants are extremely successful when performed by a trained clinician. Not every dentist has extensive training and experience to deal with the potential complications that can occur. So, make sure you are comfortable with the dentist and that he/she has the experience to take care of you. Ask your dentist as many questions as you want. If you really want to change your smile, don’t wait. Go for it now.

THE INCIDENCE OF CANCER IS RISING IN THE COUNTRY.

Yes, you can!

THE INCIDENCE OF CANCER IS RISING IN THE COUNTRY. BUT IN YOUR FIGHT AGAINST THE DISEASE, REMAINING POSITIVE GOES A LONG WAY IN WINNING OVER IT, SAY EXPERTS

Last year cancer struck closer home when a very close friend of mine got diagnosed with breast cancer. She is a homemaker, who is also a reflexology expert and a professional yoga trainer. She is the perfect hostess, who enjoys throwing parties for her friends and treating them with her exotic home-made dishes. She is an avid traveller, who loves to visit new places with her entrepreneur husband and two sons. Life was beautiful till cancer struck.
While all of us tried to cope with the news, what amazed me was Jhula’s indomitable spirit with which she decided to fight the disease. Once she got over the initial shock of being diagnosed with second stage of cancer, she fought it head on.
“In fact, her attitude gave me a lot of courage. The credit also goes to
our sons. When we first told them, Prajit’s first reaction was - ‘Don’t worry, Mummy, breast cancer is curable. So get yourself treated.’ For a 13-year-old to know that it’s curable and to react in such a positive way was very reassuring for both Jhula and me. Even when she was going through the after-effects of chemo, they took it really well,” recalls Manas P Barua. Now she is leading a normal life.
According to experts, positive attitude definitely helps. Once a person accepts that he has cancer and gets ready to undergo treatment with a happy attitude, it makes a lot of difference.
“A positive mind generates happy hormones which helps the body to fight back. So a patient with a positive take on life will bounce back better than a person full of negativity,” reveals Dr Pushpa Gaikwad, who is associated with CanSupport. This non-profit or
ganization provides free palliative home care to cancer patients.
In fact, a major part of CanSupport’s services includes counseling both the patients and their families, providing integrated palliative service.
“In other words, when we visit a patient at home, we have a team of a doctor, a nurse and a counsellor. So while treating him for his phys
ical pain, we also take care of him mind and soul. This counselling also involves the family as they also go through tremendous trauma,” says Dr Gaikwad.
There are many organizations which focus mainly on prevention and early detection, besides providing emotional support. Indian Cancer Society, I Can Win Foundation and Roko Cancer are a few such organizations that have been working relentlessly over the years in this regard.
“As a principle, we don’t say fight against cancer; it’s always win over cancer. And it’s not a cancer survivor. It’s a cancer winner. Just making little changes in the terminology, you can bring in a lot of positivity towards this disease. We at I Can Win Foundation truly believe that winning is an attitude. A person who wins is the person who THINKS he can win. And this is what we try to propagate among our members,” states Dr Pawan Gupta, an oncology surgeon and President of I Can Win Foundation.
“Just a mere suspicion that one might have any form of cancer makes people paranoid. So once a person is actually diagnosed with cancer, it’s but natural that he or she feels intimidated. That’s when organizations like Indian Cancer Society can pitch in. Since most of our members, including myself, are cancer survivors, we know what they are going through at this moment. So when we counsel them, they feel reassured that it’s not the end of the world. Life will be the same once the treatment is over,” points out Geeta Malik, President of Cancer Sahyog, a unit of Indian Cancer Society

HE FOUGHT AND HOW! When Yuvraj Singh was diagnosed with stage I lung cancer in 2011, the whole nation was left shattered. It was right after India winning the World Cup, where he was declared the Man of the Tournament. He underwent chemotherapy treatment in the USA. Yuvraj was discharged from hospital in March 2012 after completing the third and final cycle of chemotherapy. The cricketer showed the world the kind of the fighter he is, both on the filed as well as off the filed as he made his international comeback in a Twenty20 match in September against New Zealand shortly before the 2012 World Twenty20. His organization, Yuvraj Singh Foundation (YSF), works to generate awareness and facilitate early detection of cancer through its initiative YOUWECAN

To-be-moms, get physical

To-be-moms, get physical

Anew research has claimed that staying active throughout the day is more beneficial to limit excess weight gain for pregnant women. Researcher Christina Campbell said that they able to show that pregnant women spend 75% of the time they are awake in sedentary behaviors.
She said that many of these women met physical activity guidelines. But just because a women met the guidelines, doesn't necessarily mean that they were a non-sedentary person.
Getting women to be more active during pregnancy is not only
important for limiting weight gain, but it also impacts the future health of the baby.
Campbell said that if a woman gains too much, it predisposes the baby to childhood obesity and also raises the risk for maternal complications like hypertension, pre-eclampsia and postpartum obesity. That is why it is important to help women manage their weight through diet and exercise.
Campbell said that the problem is most intervention programs are centred on physical activity guidelines of 30 minutes of exercise a day. ANI

Treatments like detox therapies, exotic massages, body polishes and wraps are hot favourites to ease stress

More men heading to spas!

Treatments like detox therapies, exotic massages, body polishes and wraps are hot favourites to ease stress

Women, move over. You might have competition when it comes to the vanity department. Men are increasingly going in for spa treatments to look their best. It’s a long way from a time when spas and men only came together when boyfriends or husbands dropped by to pick up their better halves from the place. But things have changed tremendously. “Yes,” affirms wellness expert Malathi Menon. “I’ve been in the industry for 22 years and earlier while it was just a face massage, now men are so wellinformed and ask questions like ‘What is exfoliation’ or ‘How is this serum going to help me’? The balance is tipping and in fact, a health site mentions that pampering men at the spa is a top trend for 2013. Here’s more on this side to male grooming...

MEN LIKE TO CALL IT HYGIENE Spa expert Nisha Jhaveri says the male clientele has more than doubled in the last year even. “Men like to call it hygiene, rather than pampering, although they like the idea of sitting back and being pampered.” And who said exotic was the purview of the fairer sex? “They like alternate treatments — every thing from fruit masks to chocolate and caviar body wraps and more.”

DIAMONDS ARE A MAN’S BEST FRIEND TOO Don’t start thinking about jewellery, this one has to do with cosmetic care. Diamond dust facials are also in demand for those who can afford them, informs Malathi. “Men love radiance on their skin. They also mostly want suntan removal and pigmentation lightening through lactic and glycolic peels as well as anti-pigmentation masks.”

HEARD OF THE GENTLEMAN’S FACIAL?

More men are realising the need to keep the face free of enemies like toxin and bacteria. Says spa expert Radha Shetty, “Most popular are oxygen facials which give the skin oxygen, lending it a refreshed look. Also in demand is the facial with glycerin, aloe vera and tulsi, that aims to control oil and acne.”

EXOTIC INDIAN MASSAGES Indian therapies are extremely popular when it comes to working out tired muscles. “Men want the champi which uses amla, brahmi, jatamansi and curry leaves, as well as the vigorous ‘pehelwan’ malish for the body which has nature aromatherapy oils and relieves tired and sore muscles,” says another city-based spa expert.

SPA MANIS AND PEDIS

A much-in-demand treatment, this is about presentation; men want to soften rough feet and ease stressed hands to make an impression. The treatment also hyrdates the skin.

SPAS HAVE CREATED A GENDER-NEUTRAL ATMOSPHERE

The spas are also offering a malefriendly atmosphere in a part of the area in a bid to please them. Comfortable touches, clean lines and a no-fuss look are replacing overtly feminine fragrances, flowers and more.

HOT STONES AND SWEDISH MASSAGES

With the hectic lives people lead, treatments like knot-melting Swedish and deep-tissue massages, foot reflexology and using hot stones, are increasingly accepted as stress-relievers. These are also feel-good regimens and just a session a week of any of the above is said to ease away body ache; men seem to prefer it as a weekend turnaround before the new week starts.

STATISTICS According to a site, men now make up nearly a third of all spa-goers, says the International Spa Association.

TOP REASONS THAT PROPEL MEN TO A SPA Rising stress levels.
Appearance of crow’s feet.
Increasing social pressure to be better groomed at work.
The desire to look better than their female counterparts.
The increasing belief that looking good is linked to confidence.

Alpha dudes need spa pampering too

Soaking their peds is also a ‘guy thing’

13 natural ways to lower blood pressure

13 natural ways to lower blood pressure

High blood pressure can boost the risks of leading killers such as heart attack and stroke, as well as aneurysms, cognitive decline, and kidney failure.

While medication can lower blood pressure, it may cause side effects such as leg cramps, dizziness, and insomnia. Luckily, most people can bring down their blood pressure naturally without medication.
Here are top 13 natural alternatives to prescribed drugs, according to ABC News.

Go for power walks: Hypertensive patients who went for fitness walks at a brisk pace lowered pressure by almost 8 mmhg over 6 mmhg. Exercise helps the heart use oxygen more efficiently, so it doesn`t work as hard to pump blood.

Slow breathing and meditative practices such as qigong, yoga, and tai chi decrease stress hormones, which elevate renin, a kidney enzyme that raises blood pressure. So try 5 minutes in the morning and at night. Inhale deeply and expand your belly. Exhale and release all of your tension.
Eat potatoes: Loading up on potassium-rich fruits and vegetables is an important part of any blood pressure-lowering program, said Linda Van Horn, PhD, RD, professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medical.

Lower salt intake to 1,500 mg daily, said Eva Obarzanek, PhD, a research nutritionist at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Indulge in dark chocolate: Dark chocolate varieties contain flavanols that make blood vessels more elastic. In one study, 18percent of patients who ate it every day saw blood pressure decrease.

Take a supplement: In a review of 12 studies, researchers found that coenzyme Q10 reduced blood pressure by up to 17 mmhg over 10 mmhg.

Reduce alcohol intake: According to a review of 15 studies, the less you drink, the lower your blood pressure will drop-to a point.

Switch to decaf coffee: A study from Duke University Medical Center found that caffeine consumption of 500 mg-roughly three 8-ounce cups of coffee-increased blood pressure by 4 mmhg, and that effect lasted until bedtime.

Drink tea: Study participants who sipped 3 cups of a hibiscus tea daily lowered systolic blood pressure by 7 points in 6 weeks on average, said researchers from Tufts University-results on par with many prescription medications.
Work (a bit) less: Putting in more than 41 hours per week at the office raises your risk of hypertension by 15percent, according to a University of California, Irvine, study of 24,205 California residents.

Relax with music: Listening to soothing classical, Celtic, or Indian music for 30 minutes daily while breathing slowly helps lower blood pressure, according to researchers at the University of Florence in Italy.

Seek help for snoring: University of Alabama researchers found that many sleep apnea sufferers had high levels of aldosterone, a hormone that can boost blood pressure.

Jump for soy: A study from Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association found for the first time that replacing some of the refined carbohydrates in your diet with foods high in soy or milk protein, such as low-fat dairy, can bring down systolic blood pressure if you have hypertension or prehypertension.

Teens with bigger brains at eating disorder risk

Teens with bigger brains at eating disorder risk

Anew research has claimed that teens having bigger brains are more prone to suffer from anorexia nervosa. According to a study, girls with anorexia nervosa had a larger insula, a part of the brain active when we taste food, and a larger orbitofrontal cortex, a part of the brain that tells a person when to stop eating. The researchers report that the bigger brain may be the reason people with anorexia are able to starve themselves. The study said that while eating disorders are often triggered by the environment, there are most likely biological mechanisms that have to come together for an individual to develop an eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa.

Benefits: While the pilates helps to condition the muscles, the cardio-based boxing steps burn the calories to help you shed flab. Says fitness trainer Jivesh Shetty, “On one hand, you have speed with positive contractions and on the other, lengthened negative contractions, so it balances out. Piloxing is a controlled movement. As you jab to the right with your left arm, twisting the hip, it tones out the arms, strengthens the hip and shoulder joint, triceps and hamstrings and the core.”
Can burn: 500-800 calories an hour

BOKWA This is a dance-inspired fitness craze that’s fast catching up as a trend around the globe. Bokwa comes from Bo (boxing) and
Kwa (the South African war dance, Kwaito). You do cardio moves to a high energy dance. Participants draw letters and numbers with the feet while dancing. What’s unique is that it’s the only workout in the world taught with a sign language. And you need not know dancing to try it.
Benefits: Says Mumbai-based dance expert Aanchal Gupta, “It’s very intense, even more so than zumba. Bokwa helps motor training, and children can do this too. You have fun, so it’s a stress buster and makes for a great weekend workout too.”
Can burn: 1,000 calories an hour

KOGA Koga incorporates cardiovascular kickboxing and yoga into a single workout. As it offers flexibility and cardio strength, it’s being hailed as the perfect hybrid workout.
Benefits: “It’s an all-round workout,” says fitness expert and hypnotherapist Vishwajit Matkar. “It strengthens the core while stabilising the spine and improves flexibility. Koga brings together plyometric, strength balance as well as breathing training.” In a typical class, after a warm-up, there is an intense, twenty-minute kickboxing session. Post this, yoga moves focused on a particular body part are carried out.
Can burn: 800-1,000 calories an hour

YOLETT Want that sleek ballet dancer’s frame? Go for Yolett, that combines ballet dancing and and yoga in one! Folks are raving about this fitness trend. In this fusion workout, you first do ballet movesfor greater balance and flexibility. Post that, you grab a floor mat and do half an hour of yoga poses and asanas. The resulting stretch is supposed to correct body alignment.
Benefits: This is superb body sculptor, which improves posture and blood circulation too. You hold each pose for 10 seconds or more, so the
muscles are challenged. It also leaves you feeling mentally refreshed,” says yoga instructor Yogesh Chavan.

Must-haves for a weekend trip

Must-haves for a weekend trip

Planning a short weekend trip? Well, it needs some smart packing. Here are some tips:
Carry wrinkle-free clothing to avoid having to get each item ironed after you open your suitcase.
Pack accessories which would go with multiple outfits instead of picking one for each dress. A fashionable tote bag to carry all items is necessary. It could double up as a beach bag or as a
shopping bag.
Pack comfortable flat sandals and shoes. They will come handy during long walks.
Don’t forget to pack your daily medicines, if any. Carrying a first-aid kit is a must. If you are taking children along, take some basic emergency medicines.
Carry enough water and some healthy snacks. These are even more important if you are not planning to make frequent stops enroute.
