`NEVER TOO OLD TO WORK', SAY SENIOR CITIZENS

At 62, Dindayal Jain is a retired bank employee. But that has not restricted him to a rocking chair and newspapers. He has taken up work as a delivery boy now and has no plans of staying home all day . “I was concerned about how I would live out my days and knew I would miss interacting with people. My friend owns a pizza outlet in the city, so a week after my retirement I joined him as a pizza delivery boy . My family is supportive because they knew I love to ride a two-wheeler and since the bank I worked at was walking distance from my house, I didn't get to ride too often,“ shares Dindayal. “When my pizza is delivered by Dindayal, I have to ensure that my living room is clean or else he starts advising me like my mom does,“ smiles Yogesh Yadav, a regular customer who has grown fond of the new delivery boy. And Dindayal is not the only working person at his age.

Her grey hair tied up in a neat bun, Shyamala Rao gracefully informs customers at a local women's gym about various schemes and offers. “It was my daughter who encouraged me to invest my time in doing something constructive. It was quite difficult for me as I have been a housewife all my life. I considered homebased jobs stitching or tuition, but my daughter insisted that I step out. My colleagues are very amicable and so are the customers,“ says Shyamala Rao, 62.

Rehan Khan, a 65-year-old retired teacher, has started an online store where people can sell and buy various home-made products. “Due to health issues my kids were against my working after retirement. But it was difficult for me to do nothing at home. For years I have seen my wife making pickles at home, so I decided to sell them. But I could not go from doorto-door, so I started an online shop,“ says Rehan, about how he got started. Elsewhere, 66-year-old retired teacher Vishwanath Rao has started a dance academy with his wife. “We play dance videos and let the students imitate the moves.Youngsters are enjoying this because they are their own teachers here,“ smiles Vishwanath Rao.

Girish Chawla, the owner of a supermarket, prefers employing senior citizens. “Presently, I have employed three senior citizens and they are more sincere than my young employees. The only concession they seek is flexible working hours, but once they are at the workplace they outperform their younger counterparts. In the presence of seniors, the girls feel safe and shop freely without any time restraint,“ informs Girish.“Earlier, seniors preferred jobs like sewing or gardening, but now they want to learn something new,“ he adds.

Endorsing working after retirement, Dr V i v e k Chandrakar says, “Most of the health issues during old age are aggravated due to psychological s u r r e n d e r.People who take up jobs after retirement stay physically and mentally active and fit.“

5 Natural ways to have a healthier day

The first thing that you drink in the morning can have a day-long impact on your body, say experts. Try out these natural drinks to keep you healthy and refreshed.

LEMON WATER

Squeeze half a lemon in a glass of warm water and have it first thing in the morning to remain fresh and alert through the day. Lemon water helps keep the body hydrated, aids metabolism, cleanses the liver and provides relief from sore throat as well. This water also flushes toxins out of the body and helps you maintain glowing skin. Remember, do not add sugar.

MINT

Mint is a natural stimulant, which freshens your breath and increases alertness. Try to include a few mint leaves in your morning diet by preparing a mint drink. Crush a few mint leaves along with lemon juice. Add water and the drink is ready. One can even try a green smoothie with mint, yogurt and honey. It is a great stimulant.

TEA GINGER

A cup of ginger tea instead of coffee or regular tea is a great way to kick-start the day. Boil a cup of water along with a piece of ginger for a few minutes. Then add a teabag. Pour it into a cup after a few minutes, squeeze in a few drops of lemon and add a dash of honey. This concoction is a natural stimulant, and is a great way to start the day on a detox note.

EEK FENUGR WATER

Soak a tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. In the morning, remove the seeds and have the water on an empty stomach. This helps keep high cholesterol levels in check. This water also helps diabetics control their sugar level to a great extent. This can be had in addition to the medicines that they take.

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT YOGA MAT

With a range of options available in the market to choose from, it can get confusing to pick the right yoga mat. Here are some important things to keep in mind...

Get the right thickness: The thickness of your yoga mat decides how comfortable it is. If it's too thin, your knee or ankles may get injured. On the other hand, if it is too thick, it'll make it difficult for you to do certain poses and make you wobbly. It will also be bulky, making it difficult to store when not in use. It is best to go for a standard yoga mat, which is about 18th of an inch thick.

Material of the yoga mat: The material comprises the texture, stickiness and sponginess (how much it yields to pressure). Almost all standard yoga mats are made of PVC (vinyl), though newer options include natural and recycled rubber and even organic cotton. A PVC yoga mat is good and will last for more than a decade if used properly. The sponginess varies with different blends of materials, but PVC is the spongiest.

Stickiness: PVC yoga mats are the stickiest, but only when they are clean. They keep you from sliding while doing certain asanas.

Texture: If you don't like PVC mats, the next best option for you is a rubber, jute or cotton yoga mat. These have a slightly raised pattern and provide an extra grip, which almost eliminates the chances of slipping and sliding off. Remember, the mat should also have enough grip with the floor as well.

Eco-friendly:
You could also use yoga mats that are PVC-free and made from a natural plant-based material such as rubber or jute.

Bizarre animal arrests and trials

While its common for humans to face the law for com mitting a crime, what's unheard of is animals be ing produced in court and tried for offence. The recent example is that of 18 male lions in Gujarat that are being put on trial for murder by the Government of India and if found guilty, will be serving a life sentence in a zoo. Here are a few other such examples.

ELEPHANT PRODUCED IN COURT FOR KILLING THREE PEOPLE

GOATS ARRESTED FOR DAMAGING POLICE CAR

The animals were held and put into a cage thereafter. However, they were later released to the Society for Prevention to Cruelty to Animals.

In another instance, a goat was arrested for eating flowers. The case soon received a lot of public interest. However, when the goat was brought to the court, the magistrate dismissed the case against lack of evidence!

GO BEYOND MEDITATION TO HOLD OFF OFFICE ANGER

Stress and workload can lead to a loss of temper at workplace, and it takes more than holding your breath to manage it
Are you having a tough time controlling your anger at work? Do you think that all this happens due to the high stress levels at your job, too much workload or any other reason? Well, holding your breath and meditating is not the only way out. Here are few ways that can help you develop better control on your office anger:

BE OPEN TO YOUR WEAKNESSES

While showing your strengths at your workplace is a positive step, be open to your weaknesses as well. We are a mixed bag, no one is good at everything. If you know that you are bad with numbers, you can ask your coworkers to have a look at your calculations. That rectification would only help you become accurate and more confident. If you think you have done the calculations and have overcome one of your weaknesses, give yourself a reward as simple as your favourite chocolate.

THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK

Think before uttering your words. One usually ends up becoming rude and harsh. Remember, everyone works equally as much as you do.“I have an experience of 12 years in entrepreneurship and have seen many new faces come and go. It was very difficult in the beginning to work and deal with them and get angry. Gradually, I realised that I too have been through this phase,“ says Aashka Pandit.

If you face any kind of harsh treatment from your colleague, returning the harshness back would only spoil your relation. That does not mean that you repress speaking up even when needed, but handle the situation calmly and peacefully.

APPRECIATE YOURSELF

Begin your day at office with a `Yes, I can do it!' attitude. “If you end up meeting a deadline perfectly, treat yourself. In focusing on all that is negative, don't forget about the positives.Appreciate yourself for the good work you've put in and learn to give yourself a pat on the back every now and then,“ says Dr. Rajesh Goyal, a consultant psychiatrist. This will help boost up your self-confidence.

DIVERT YOUR ANGER

When you feel angry, one of the best ways to tackle the situation is to divert your attention to something else. Pick up a newspaper from the rack and start solving puzzles. This would help you divert your mood to a pleasant one. The logic and reasoning that you would use while solving it, would tap your negative energy and you would feel rejuvenated.

STAY AWAY FROM NEGATIVE TALKS

Gossiping and talking negative about the boss or a colleague is a common thing in offices. And if you feel disturbed with such negative habits, the best thing to do is stay away from it.There might be instances where your colleagues want you to join them with your inputs, but that will get you in trouble. “It's just been a few months since I started working. I stay away from being presumptuous and judgmental. I have learnt that there are two type of workmates around; one who'll always talk ill about others and one appreciates the good qualities that each one has,“ says Isha Jhaveri, who prefers to be with the latter kind of people that helps her being less frustrated and open minded.

Sairat director Nagraj Manjule's ex-wife works as a house help

While Sairat is the highest gross ing Marathi film, certain issues from the past seem to still haunt the director, Nagraj Manjule, who's been in the limelight since his big release.Rumours about Nagraj's ex-wife Sunita planning to file a domestic violence case against him have been claimed as untrue by her. It was also reported earlier that Sunita was planning to re-open the couple's divorce case, but she denies it saying, “We are not pursuing any case against him.“ The couple legally divorced in 2014, the same year that his first feature film Fandry released. Sunita's mother says,“For 15 years, my daughter toiled hard in his home, took care of his family and all that we got after the divorce was a measly sum of `7 lakh. Today , he is earning crores, but not once has he thought of Sunita or how she must be living her life.“
Sunita works as a house help in Pune today . While her close ones swear by the troubles she has endured, some feel otherwise. A source says, “This is all a publicity stunt. They have been divorced legally two years ago and suddenly because Sairat is doing so well and Nagraj is the talk of the town, the family is using it to their advantage by doing all this.“
Reports about Sunita enduring domestic abuse while she was married have also surfaced. Quiz her about this and she says, “He didn't want to have children because he wanted to focus on his career. I aborted thrice during our time together at his insistence.“ Her mother adds, “We are illiterate people (Sunita has studied only till class VIII) and are unfamiliar with the legal procedure. He cheated us and got the divorce papers signed.“ When Sunita was asked if Nagraj has met her in the recent past, she responded, “He hardly is in Pune. He travels to London and America now.“ So are they expecting something from Nagraj? “Sunita still considers him as her husband. Ti tyachya navryacha kunku lavte (she still applies vermillion on her forehead). All we want is for him to accept our presence.“
Throughout this controversy , the Sairat director has kept quiet on his side of the story and not responded to the accusations levelled against him. We tried to get in touch with him again, but we didn't get a response at the the time of going to press.
