Seven reasons to walk regularly

Walking has the ability to reduce the risk of obesity , diabetes and car diovascular disease. It's also effective enough to maintain weight and control pain from chronic disease. It is recommended that adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week as well as two days of resistance training.A survey found that an overwhelming majority of people don't meet these benchmarks. We've rounded up seven reasons why you should take up walking as an exercise.IT IS LINKED TO LOWER RATES OF OBESITY AND PREMATURE DEATH
People, who walk to work are less likely to be obese, according to a study . Walking just 20 minutes a day can reduce your risk of premature death by 30%. About 30 minutes of walking a day burns 150 calories, which can help you reach a calorie deficit that leads to weight loss.
WALKING HELPS PREVENT DIABETES
Walking regulates blood sugar levels, which keeps insulin levels low and diabetes at bay .Walking for 15 minutes after meals helped regulate blood sugar levels just as effectively as one 45-minute walk per day , said a study, which is good for those daunted by one big walking session.
IT IS A GOOD FORM OF EXERCISE FOR YOUR HEART
Everyone knows that in the ranking of bestfor-you exercises, running is better than walking, right? Not necessarily , and especially not when it comes to cardiovascular health. A study found that walkers who cover the same mileage as runners enjoy com parable reductions in high blood pressure, high cholesterol and coronary heart disease. While it took twice as long for walkers to cover the distance, walking may be a more sustainable and accessible activity than running for most people, especially those who are new to exercise.
WALKING IS GENTLE ENOUGH FOR PEOPLE OF ALL BODY TYPES
Pregnant? Morbidly obese? Arthritic? Walking is gentle enough for most people who have these conditions, doctors agree, and the activity can help ease the pain of chronic illness -even if you have to start off by walking just two minutes a day .
IT LIFTS YOUR MOOD AND PROTECTS AGAINST DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY
Moving your body is a good way to release endorphins, a set of feel-good chemicals that dull pain receptors in the brain, sedate you and even give you feelings of happiness and euphoria. That's why walking is recommended to help improve symptoms of mild to moderate depression. Walking briskly for 35 minutes five times a week, or 60 minutes three times a week, has a significant influence on mild to moderate depression symptoms.
IT'LL HELP YOU SLEEP BETTER AT NIGHT
There's a reason that travel experts advise you to walk around a new city on the day you arrive. Exposing your body to sunlight and staying outside helps recalibrate the hormone melatonin to your new surroundings and time zone. As melatonin rises, so does feelings of sleepiness.

30 and single? Who cares!

A recent report says that if you are 30 and still single, you need to change your dating patterns. We say, turn a deaf ear...
So what if you haven't found anyone worth committing to it yet? And so what, if you've turned 30 and still enjoy being solo. Let alone dating patterns, don't let this change anything since love will find you anyway, even through imperfections. And should anyone make you feel miserable for being single at 30, here are some reasons to make you smile:
  THIRTIES ARE THE NEW TWENTIES
Getting married early maybe cool, but for most people these days, 20's are all about getting careers sorted, travelling, enjoying life and getting to know themselves. In fact, a lot of people don't find enough time to date amidst all this (especially fulfilling career goals), so it makes sense if marriage happens after all that, so you have a lot of time to enjoy pure marital bliss.

YOU NEED TIME TO WORK ON YOURSELF
After the honeymoon period, relationships are all about sharing experiences. Everyone brings their share of craziness to the table, and you should never fall short of words when this happens. So take time, explore and have new experiences.

YOU CAN SPEND TIME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS
You've always heard married people complaining how they have to juggle between their work, friends, parents and their relationship. You're lucky you don't have to do any of that. You can have long late-night chats with your mom or spend long hours drinking and chatting with friends, without worrying about someone waiting at home.

NO OBLIGATIONS, WHATSOEVER
You are in the best phase of your life, wherein you are financially independent and still have no obligations whatsoever. A relationship means sharing and adjusting, you don't have to worry about any of these as long as you are single. Enjoy it, while it lasts.

NOT ANSWERABLE TO ANYONE
You can stay out till 4 am or hit your bed as early as 8 pm, or read your favourite book for hours or shop till your literally drop, you are not answerable to anyone. However, being committed or getting married would involve sharing finances for future investments like a home, car, insurance and your indulgences might have to take a backseat.

INDULGE YOUR CRAZY SIDE
Change of career, do up the house, wake up and get implusive and take a sudden trip or drive endlessly without knowing the road -you can do all these crazy things only when you are single. No one is going roll their eyes, if you go back to the same shop ten times till you are absolutely sure of buying those absolutely lovely pair of footwear.

FOREVER IS A LONG TIME
Spending the rest of your life with someone special seems like the most ideal situation, and everyone hopes that it lasts forever. However, forever is a long time, so what's the hurry. However long it takes to find the right guy, it will be worth it and you will have a lot of time to share.

Splitting on a happy note with a divorce selfie

Taking the selfie craze to bizarre levels is the trend of divorce selfie. It refers to selfie uploaded by (former) couples who have just gotten a divorce.HOW IT STARTED: The first divorce selfie that went viral was taken by Keith Hinson and Michelle Knight in August 2014, which they took at the courthouse. Keith posted the selfie and captioned it, “We are officially un-married. Here's to the most friendly , respectful, and loving split imaginable. We smile not because it's over, but because it happened. #divorceselfie“ HOW IT'S DONE: All that has to be done is to take a selfie of yourself and your ex-spouse in front of the courthouse where the divorce was final ized, or holding up the divorce papers. Or the two of you could just be smiling in the pic and you could give it a soppy caption about how you can be #happilydivorced.

Bizarre injuries in the world of sports

The 21-year-old Canadian tennis sensation Eugenie Bouchard who entertained Flushing Meadows with her jovial countenance during her mixed doubles match, paired with hot-headed Aussie Nick Kyrgios, tripped in the locker room, hitting her head, shortly after she got off the court.Eugene had to withdraw from the US Open post her weird fall. There are other bizarre incidents where some talented sportspersons managed to injure themselves in the strangest ways possible...

  KEN GRIFFEY JR'S PINCHING BLUES
Former professional baseball player Ken Griffey Junior missed on a game in 2006 when his protective cup slipped and pinched a testicle. The incident also made him the butt of many a locker room joke. Griffey is a Hall of Famer when it comes to self-inflicted injuries. He had been held out of play by eight unrelated injuries, the second most embarrassing being a broken hand sustained while wrestling with his son on his yacht in the Bahamas.

DARREN FLETCHER TOILET WOES
When you're getting up off the toi let, you're really not expecting any flying objects to be coming at you.
But former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher learned the hard way that you apparently have to keep your head on a swivel at all times, as a crash ing door did some serious damage to his forehead.

DAVID SEAMAN'S BONE-BREAKING LEGEND
Former English footballer David Seaman played as a goalkeeper for several clubs, most notably Arsenal. But what is even more memorable is the fact that Seaman's injury record ranks right up there. In his first season with Arsenal, he let past just 18 goals, allowing the club to retain their league title. Five years later, he made a record as he allowed 17 goals in all 38 games. Then, the injuries began piling up and Seaman was like a one man emergency room. First, he injured his shoulder trying to reel in a big carp on a fishing trip. Later, he broke a bone while reaching for a television remote.

BILL GRAMATICA'S GREEK TRAGEDY
It has earned its rightful place as one of the funniest incidents in sports and full marks to Arizona Cardinals' former kicker Bill Gramatica for this `feat'. After nailing a 42-yard field goal in the game, Gramatica jumped in joy and then descended to the ground, where he suffered a torn ACL. Gramatica's injury on the field goal celebration meant he was sidelined for the ensuing kickoff, and it was Pat Tillman, who handled the kick.

ROGER CRAIG'S NOT SO COOL CUT
The baseball world will always remember Roger as the master craftsman of split finger fastball with the New York Mets, where he won 15 of the 27 games he pitched.Later, as a manager and coach, he helped turn the San Francisco Giants into a powerhouse in the 1980s, sending them to their first World Series in more than 25 years. So, when the celebrity mentor seriously cut his hand on a bra strap, he had to face many ribald jokes. Interestingly, Craig admitted to it and didn't even try to concoct a story to cover it up, apparently enjoying his Casanova image.

JASON PIERREPAUL'S FIREWORKS
There are always warnings about the risks and hazards involved with shooting off fireworks. Popular American footballer Jason Pierre-Paul suffered a serious hand injury, setting off fourth of July fireworks at his South Florida home earlier this year. People claiming to be his neighbours took to a social networking site to post pictures of a U-Haul supposedly rented by Pierre-Paul filled with boxes of fireworks. One of those neighbours wrote, “I'm currently scared for my home's safety .''

New human species with tiny brain found in SA cave

Homo Naledi May Have Followed Burial Rituals

The fossilised bones of 15 members of a previously unknown branch of the human family tree have been discovered in a cave in South Africa, scientists said Thursday , hailing the find as a breakthrough in evolution research.
About 1,500 fossils were found deep in a cave system outside Johannesburg, hidden in a chamber only accessible via several steep climbs and narrow rock crevasses.

The hominid-described as a “new species“ of human --has been named Homo naledi after the “Rising Star“ cave where the bones were found. Naledi means “star“ in Sesotho, a local South African language.

Researchers said Homo naledi had a tiny brain, about the size of an average orange, perched atop a very slender body . Its hands suggest tool-using capabilities.

Experts are uncertain how old the bones are, but say they were probably placed there after death--a discovery that shines light on ancient human rituals.

“We have just met a new species of human relative that deliberately disposed of its dead,“ Lee Berger, project leader and palaeoanthropologist at Johannesburg's Uni versity of the Witwatersrand, announced as the fossils were unveiled.

“Until this moment we thought the idea of ritualised behaviours directed towards the dead... was actually unique to Homo sapiens. We saw ourselves as different. We have now seen, we believe, a species that had that same capability -and it is an extraordinary thing.“ Scientists hailed the dis covery of a new species, Homo naledi, on Thursday . “The discovery of so many fossils belonging to at least 15 individuals is remarkable,“ said Professor Chris Stringer, from the Natural History Museum in London, one of the lead analysts on the discovery .

The find highlighted “the complexity of the human family tree and the need for further research to understand the history and ultimate origins of our species,“ he added.

Scientists say the hands, wrists and feet of the bodies were similar to modern hu mans, but the brain size and upper body were much more like the earliest humans.“Homo naledi had a tiny brain, about the size of an average orange, perched atop a ve ry slender body ,“ said John Hawks, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a senior author on the academic paper detailing the new species. The hominid stood approximately 1.5 metres (about 5 feet) tall and weighed about 45 kg. “The hands suggest tool-using capabilities,“ said Tracy Kivell of the University of Kent, in Britain, who was part of the team that studied Homo naledi's anatomy.

“Surprisingly , Homo naledi has extremely curved fingers, more curved than almost any other species of early hominin, which clearly demonstrates climbing capabilities,“ she said.

The bones were first discovered in 2013 by Witwatersrand University scientists and volunteer cavers in the Cradle of Humankind site 50 km northwest of Johannesburg.

6 WORDS ALL COUPLES USE DURING ARGUMENTS

After being married for two decades, I've noticed a couple of things about arguing with my husband.Probably the most surprising thing is the complete lack of variety . We basically have four arguments that we recycle over and over again, with no resolution in sight. One of them is about how to make stew. We both have the script, and, for reasons we can't explain, we feel the need to give it a go every now and then. The other fascinating thing is that it's not the outrageously offensive words that send us out of our minds and escalate our discussions into full-blown battles. It's six seemingly innocent words that can take a regular old argument and send it into another dimension of time and hate. I call them: The fighting words.
Nothing. Seriously. Whatever.Nevermind. Fine. Chill. You know them. You hate them. But you use them. And you get them used on you. Forget gender stereotypes; women don't have the monopoly on `nothing' and men don't have the rights to `chill out'.

1 NOTHING
Of all the words, I call this one the `gateway' fighting word. Once `noth ing' comes out, it unleashes the others. A `nothing' is always in response to `What's wrong?' And that's the problem right there... you don't know what's wrong. Clearly , the fight is already brewing. You know it. They know it. You're both just waiting for the other to actually ask the question. And everyone, including you, knows that `nothing' universally means something. But what it really means is this: `You know that I know that you know damn well what's the matter.' At this point, you're trapped. If you don't know what's the matter, well, you are an insensitive idiot. If you do know what's the matter, chances are you caused it.Good luck with that.

2 SERIOUSLY?
When used as a question with a des perately irritated tone, `seriously?' can make even the calmest of partners freak the hell out. You see, they were being serious. What you are actually saying is this: `You can't possibly mean the thing you just said because it was so stupid andor thoughtless that only a jackass would say it to me.' But, that's a mouthful. So, instead, a wide-eyed `seriously?' will escalate the argument quite nicely . Well done. But be prepared for a `chill out' or maybe even a `whatever'. You totally have it coming.

3 WHATEVER
Ah, `whatever'. It's definitely a crowd favourite. This word has the ability to cut right through the already frayed nerves of your partner and quickly unravel years of pent-up hostility .This is because it's an annoying word used to marginalise the feelings of your partner, while simultaneously showing them your complete disregard for reaching a resolution. You'd like to imagine you are above using a `whatever', but you're not. It's too effective. And if you think a this word will end the argument, think again. I've never met a person strong enough to walk away from a `whatever'. If you throw one out or get one thrown at you, be prepared.

4 NEVERMIND
At first glance, you might confuse `nevermind' with `nothing'. This is a rookie mistake. This word is a hybrid of `nothing' and `whatever', making it one of the most powerful and dangerous fighting words. Where `nothing' makes you guess what's the matter, `nevermind' doesn't fool around. It boldly says: `Yeah, something is wrong all right, but I can't even be bothered to explain it to you because you are not bright enough to comprehend it, so, I am exiting the conversation'. Oh, it's good.Little-known fact: `Nevermind' can be as effective when you are right as when you are wrong.

5 FINE
`Fine' shares the same dismissive properties as `whatever', but it is much more manipulative. It's actually a mock capitulation. You are doing what is most crafty and most impressive in an argument. You are letting them have the last say on the topic without saying you agree. You are effectively saying: `You're not right, but at this point I can't stand the sound of your voice, so we are done here'. Good stuff. And what it lacks in escalating the argument, it makes up for in years of simmering resentment.
Helpful tip: A `fine' in response to a `fine' is one of the only known ways to end an unresolvable argument, and still have time to grab dinner.

6 CHILL. (MORE SPECIFICALLY, `CHILL OUT')
`Don't tell me to chill out' should probably be on my tombstone. It's my No 1 trigger word. To tell someone who's upset about anything, and I don't care what it is, to `chill out' is to take your life in your hands. Nothing -not `whatever', not `nevermind', not `seriously', not even `nothing' -can send your partner into a complete freak-out like telling him or her to chill out. The only two appropriate responses to `chill out' are `Don't tell me what to do' andor `Bite me'. Both responses are well-deserved, and the partner who uttered the `chill out' should 1) have known this was where it would end and 2) probably should start looking for an apartment.

DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE A VISION PROBLEM?

When Vinayak Shetty (38), a Central Mumbai based resident started receiving several complaints from his seven-year old child's class teacher about incomplete schoolwork, he tried to discipline the kid for not paying attention in his class. But when the problem persisted, based on the suggestion of the child's class teacher, Shetty decided to get the child's vision examined. To his disappointment, Shetty found out that his boy is suffering from myopia and would need corrective fering from myopia and would need corrective therapy for his vision. Medical experts say that Shetty's case is not an isolated one. They point out that according to a study conducted by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), one in every four school children have some or the other kind of vision problems that, if left untreated, can affect learning ability , personality and adjustment in school.

According Dr Hemalini Samant, a leading pediatric ophthalmologist at a city based hospital, there is certainly an increase in the number of cases coming in for school going students with vision problems. “Between the 5-7 age groups, we have seen a consistent increase in the cases coming in over the last few years,“ she says. Dr Samant explains that there are various factors that are at play for increased cases of vision problem among children. “One reason is purely pathological, as in urban India, there is an increase in number of babies being born through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), such babies are generally born premature and have very high incidence of myopia (nearsightedness),“ she says.

Heredity , babies who are treated by laser for Retinopathy of Pre-maturity , pre-natal stress suffered by the mother, those who are born as twins are most likely to suffer from one of the refractive errors, explains Dr Samant. The other reason according to experts is lifestyle related. Kids now-a-days are always glued to the computer screen at schools, to their iPads and gaming devices at home which causes strain on the eyes continuously . “Kids of today do not go out and play owing to the restricted lifestyle. Continues exposure to glaring screen causes strain which in turn causes spasm of the muscles leading to accommodation problems of the lens and myopia,“ says Dr Anil Mansukhani, a city based ophthalmologist.
Also, an increased awareness among parents about existing issues is causing a rise in the number of cases. However, doctors warn against being overenthusiastic. In their zest to get the problem fixed in their child's life, they may tend to not listen to the doctor, leading to wrong diagnosis.

TREATING OSTEOARTHRITIS USING ADVANCED TECHNIQUES

Joint replacement surgeon and knee specialist Dr Suraj Gurav, M Sorth DN Borth MNAMS and Fellowship in Joint Replacement, Singapore, says that osteoarthritis is a disease that involves the damage of the cushioning between the joints in the knee.“Osteoarthritis results in wear and tear of the knee joint and further complications call for a Total Knee Replacement (TKR). Although the cruciate ligament of the knee was initially removed as a means of treatment, the global trend for TKR now leans towards a technique that does not involve the cutting of the cruciate ligament, known as the Cruciate Retaining Arthroplasty (CRA). As a result, a patient is able to get in and out of a chair more confidently . Knee bending is physiologically easy and natural. High knee flexion and sitting cross-legged is possible,“ he says. Dr Suraj's technique combines CRA with the Triradiate minimally invasive approach. This not only saves the muscle from being cut but kneecap replacement is also done.Blood transfusion is prevented here as a drain is not inserted in the knee.Physiotherapy is markedly reduced.Studies in this technique have corroborated high success rates and long lasting results. “It gives me great joy to see my patients able leading fulfilling lives and yet feel their knees function more naturally than was earlier,“ says Dr Gurav .
His patient, Shantala Padukone says, “After TKR, I could walk on the same day . Today , I am confident enough to climb stairs and negotiate uneven surfaces on my own. I can even sit cross legged comfortably .“
