It’s official! Kangana’s Manikarnika to clash with Hrithik’s Super 30 early next year

On January 25, 2019, the audience can expect fireworks at the box office. BT has it that Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi will clash with Hrithik Roshan’s Super 30.

Manikarnika, which will see Kangana as the warrior queen Rani Laxmibai, was initially slated to release on April 27, 2018. The makers then toyed with the idea of releasing it on August 15 this year. But finally, they have now decided on a Republic Day weekend release, next year.

When we reached out to the studio backing the period drama, the spokesperson confirmed the development. Preparations are on in full swing to bring out a teaser over the next few days to announce the date of release.

Interestingly, earlier this year, trade pundits had announced that Hrithik Roshan’s biopic on mathematician Anand Kumar, would release on the Republic Day weekend, 2019. It will be interesting to see how these two will battle it out at the box office in the coming year.

4 Things to keep in mind while connecting with women online

Instead of appearing as a creep, there is some online decorum to follow when it comes to meeting women in the virtual space

Social media is a big part of our lives. We talk to a lot of people online on a daily basis and communication has effectively increased within our social spheres. Even meeting people for socialising over the internet has increased significantly over the years and many people look at virtual spaces to meet the right people now. Social media platforms and various dating apps are frequently used and sometimes they’re both a gift and a curse. Gift because you get to connect with plenty of people and curse because sometimes people just get stuck in the virtual world and have difficulty coming out of it. The first rule to find someone on an online platform for yourself is to know the difference between an offline and an online space. There is some online decorum you must adhere to, exactly how you would offline. For instance, it’s great if you’re bored and checking girls out online, jumping profiles like you’re on a trampoline, especially of girls you find cute and you don’t know. Maybe sometimes it’s the best way to meet someone but there are some dos and don’ts or a way to go about things, so that you don’t come off as a creep!

1 FIND SOMEONE FROM A SIMILAR SOCIAL CIRCLE

While it’s okay to try and talk to girls you don’t know on social media, it’s better if they’re in the same social circle or have at least two degrees of separation from you. If you guys have common friends then it’s a bonus because you can ideally find out more about her, rather than approaching her with a creepy message. An easier way to do this is to pick a friend from your friend list who is social and browse through her friend list. Choose someone who seems outgoing and maybe talk to your friend to find out if she’s single.

2 MAKE YOUR PRESENCE FELT

After you’ve selected someone you like, and have found out enough about her, you can send her a friend request or a ‘follow’ request. Don’t flood her inbox with ‘Hey, want to be friends’ messages. Instead, start making your presence felt by liking her posts, if her profile is public, or commenting on them. If she responds, great. Maybe then you can send her a message. In case she doesn’t respond, then you can send her a message saying you’d like to get to know her better. If she still doesn’t respond, move on!

3 SEND HER A SIMPLE MESSAGE

If you’re planning on sending her a message, make it simple and maybe witty perhaps. Don’t use clichéd pick up lines or something picked out of a text book. Girls dig humour, wit and simplicity, so if you can send her something that sounds smart and funny, you’re already almost there.

4 MAKE HER FEEL SAFE

Give her the right kind of attention and make her feel safe with your presence online. If you creep her out too much, she might just get put off and report you. Give her some time to respond and don’t hound her to get back as soon as you send her a message. If she sees how calm and composed you are, she will reply back. This article is not to creep someone out online or to stalk girls. We all check out other people’s online profiles and it’s human nature to be inquisitive. Just make sure you do it with some class and integrity.

Teenagers more at risk of cyberbullying

Children may experience social exclusion if private or humiliating rumours are shared about them

Teenagers who spend more than two hours a day browsing through social media without monitoring or digital literacy background may be more at risk of cyberbullying, a UK-based study has found. School children who were spending even a little over 120 minutes on social networking sites each day could encounter electronic communication of an intimidating or threatening nature.

Such children may experience social exclusion if private, inappropriate or humiliating rumours were shared about them if they mistakenly posted private information or met strangers online, the researchers said. “This was an important finding which challenges past research”, said co-author Artemis Tsitsika, professor at a university in Athens, Greece. Earlier, it was believed that only excessive use of a social network site profile increases the risk of becoming a victim of cyberbullying. For their study, the researchers undertook a school-based study across countries.

Anonymous questionnaires about internet use, social factors and cyberbullying were completed by 12,372 students aged between 14 to 17. The researchers found that a high percentage of school children have been bullied online.

Anti-gravity workouts that are popular in the city

Playing acrobat, doing the trapeze and being flexible on a pole, are getting Mumbaikars fit in a fun way

Forget the treadmills, dumbbells, kettlebells and rowing machines. Workouts seem to going off the ground to add a new dimension to Mumbaikars’ fitness routines. They use your own body weight to you going upside down on a pole, suspended from ceiling straps and flying through the air with the help of ropes. Ready to engage with some anti-gravity fun? Here are three routines to try…

DOING THE POLE DANCE

Here’s a fitness regimen that has swept the West and, of late, pole dancing is catching on in Mumbai, too. If you have harboured any preconceived notions towards this — passing it off as just a series of saucy moves — banish that thought. The city now as a number of enthusiastic pole dance learners who are balancing, arching and carouseling their way to a fitter body. Aarifa Bhinderwala who has trained in pole art in Australia, says, “Pole dancing is a wholistic and an all-encompassing practice that works on the body and mind to defy gravity and overcome limitations. It works every muscle in the body while building a rock-solid core, greater flexibility, endurance and stamina. It strengthens the spirit of the poler, that translates into poetic grace and grit. It’s also great to see more women open to learning it now.”

Shilpa Rane who also teaches it, says, “Pole dancing is considered a fitness workout and is not just about a gyrating routine. It is also empowering for women as you really know how strong you can get by trying moves on the pole. It tests flexibility, endurance and strength to be able to do the moves without a break. While it’s yet to become mainstream, it’s getting popular in the city. I’d advise everyone to take time out from their busy schedules to try it.”

One needs to be patient when picking up pole dancing. She explains, “Because it happens mid-air you need to keep balance and coordination in sync, so it takes a minimum of three months to get the basics right. And each routine can last from one to three minutes depending on your level.”

BENEFITS

Burns calories and cuts the flab Improves flexibility in the spine and legs It lowers blood pressure Builds muscle tone Improves stability and balance Boosts cognitive abilities

GLIDING THROUGH THE AIR WITH AERIAL SILK

Stressed out? How about hanging upside down or even gliding freely through the air? Yes, that’s possible, courtesy aerial silk.

Aerialists use a variety of yoga poses as they hang this way using the silk (special fabric that one is suspended from) for support. Also called, ‘Aerial Acrobatic Flying Dance’, Aerial Silk has quite a few takers in Mumbai. Affirms Aditi Deshpande, who teaches this, “Mumbaikars are increasingly signing up to learn how to climb the silk. Counteracting gravity this way releases tension from the body. It can add like a retraction for the spine and decrease pain. One also can do a lot of flexibility positions here, such as a split, back arch-balance and back bending. Since the exercises are performed off the ground, you have to work harder to balance while exercising. Thus the mind-body co-ordination has to be there. When I started out, I had just 15 students and close to 300 Mumbaikars learning this across the city. What’s more, anyone at any age can try this.”

Fitness enthusiast Aanchal Gupta tried the regimen and loved her experience. “Aerial silk left me feel flexible, I wish I had tried it earlier. At first, I was skeptical if could do the moves upside down using the silk. Despite my foundation of weight training, it still took me two months to pick up the technique. But once I did, the feeling of gliding through the air was such a high.”

Nutritionist Renata Pavrey took up the aerial silk class as it was an extension of her dance and other sports activities. “I heard about the regimen and decided to give it a go. It’s easy to learn and an instructor eases you through the moves. First, they teach you make the ‘knot’, which is basically wrapping your leg in the silk to give yourself a footing. Then you hoist yourself up and do the movements. If you are doing an inverted movement, you wrap the silk around your waist. In one move, we also learnt to make a ‘swing’ and sit on it, so there are a lot of variety in the movements. Since this is anti-gravity, it eases the pressure from the joints. It also allows for a better stretch, for instance — doing a split or a back bend. Certain movements boost blood flow like a head stand and this is easy to do with the silk. The material helps you carry your weight through it all,” she explains.

BENEFITS

Increases flexibility and improves body alignment Wakes up even dormant muscles Pushes the body to limits that are otherwise much harder to achieve on the ground Removes boredom from the usual workouts on terra firma Aerial silk is also calming owing to the oxygen supply to the brain

HANGING OUT WITH TRX SUSPENSION

TRX, also called or Total Body Resistance Exercise, is another popular anti-gravity workout where you perform different movements while being suspended from straps. Explains teacher Bindiya Vishwasrao, “The TRX is usually suspended from the ceiling or another secure spot . Rule is, the farther you are from the TRX, the easier it is, the closer you are, the tougher it is. Standing on one leg makes it more challenging, so there are variations to the style, too. It targets all muscle groups as you are dealing with your total body weight. It’s also an excellent way for correcting the form and one can do cardio, stretching and strength-based moves on the straps.” Can anyone try it? “Yes, TRX is helpful for a city like Mumbai, where people have sedentary jobs and often suffer from neck and shoulder pain. But warm up well before taking it on,” she advises.

BENEFITS

TRX is convenient as you can set up the suspension system anywhere, even take it along on a holiday It is anti-gravity and therefore, low-impact It improves muscle strength and decreases risk of cardio-vascula r disease Unlike a machine in the gym, here, if an exercise feels tough to perform, change the load just by realigning yourself at a better suspension angle

As testosterone flowed unchecked, men scored not just as football players, but won or lost as human beings too

I am not one of those who stay glued to television during World Cup Football matches. However, intrigued by the unbridled passion all around, I do catch a few. And once there, more than the game itself, what fascinates me is the pitting of man against man under extreme circumstances. In a level playing field, where each player is almost as good or bad as the rest, one or two still stand head and shoulders above others. What makes them better than the best?

I like to observe how men behave towards each other under extremely provocative circumstances. Do they stick to character? Do they care about right and wrong, fair or unfair – or is it all guns drawn and to hell with morality? I find fascinating the sharp contrast between a roaring Maradona with his obscene double finger gesture towards the field and the quietly effective Messi down on his knees with a grateful finger of each hand pointing to the Heavens. Two pointing fingers — each expressing the same joy — yet a world of a difference.

And all that aggression on the field! The taut lines of bodies, the bursting sinews, barely-controlled facial expressions, expletives dancing on lips and blazing eyes – how is such fury, such passion whipped up? And under all that blistering testosterone is the fear of meeting the expectations of millions. The adoration of millions can be a heady intoxication – but it doesn’t take long for public adoration to change to anger, pity or even hatred. The spotlight is not everyone’s cup of tea. While Ronaldo adores it and flowers under it, Messi shies away and wilts under all that attention. And yet, inborn talent is quite another force that drives them.

Then again, I wonder at all the antics on the field knowing these invite penalties – hitting, hurting, holding back, elbowing and kicking! For instance, in the Argentina vs. Nigeria match, I wonder if it was an unthinking raw instinct that urged Javier Mascherano to hold back Leon Balogun in the box, or a calculated move that went wrong? For those who missed the match, this was what led to the penalty that saw Victor Moses drive home a goal that gave Argentina a decided fright. When referees differ widely in decisions from one game to another over seemingly similar circumstances - don't you worry about how fair and square can a game be ultimately?

Does it not make you wonder over the part Destiny plays in a victory or loss – apart from all talent, discipline, practice and preparations? But then, whose Destiny? Is it the collective destiny of each individual who plays in the team, or is it the Destiny of the nation? Can one individual’s destiny change the decision for an entire team – just like one super talented individual can spell that difference for a team?

Then off the field, there are instances that reveal a lot about a country’s culture and its people’s values. The synchronised warm-up dance of Senegal was testimony to the country’s joyous celebration of life. The Japanese revealed discipline and sense of responsibility when they cleaned up the stadium after scoring a win over Colombia. Apparently, they do it even if they lose. Senegal fans also cleaned up after scoring a win over Poland.

However, the most touching scenes from the football field are right after a match – when all passion spent, the victors bow in gratitude and go into a team huddle with pride and unadulterated joy, while the losing side bows down in defeat and each one is alone in his despair. To watch grown men cry is heart-rending… And yet this is the defining moment where it all begins and ends. Glad I watched some matches – got interesting insights into human behaviour on and off the field.

Lead a normal life after total knee replacement surgery

Total knee replacement surgery is unarguably one of the most successful operations. However, many patients fear about the risks involved, complications of the procedure and most importantly, life immediately after the surgery. While some believe that the operation may be painful, others assume that day-today activities can get restricted in the immediate post-operative period.

More than two million knee replacement surgeries are done worldwide and over 1,00,000 knee replacement surgeries are performed in India alone, per year. Despite the advances in technology and expertise, dealing with the fear of recovery is still something that patients and surgeons worry about.

Although a lot is heard about technological advances and success stories have been shared by medical experts and surgeons over a period of time, little has been written about the fear factor and what really happens in the immediate post-operative phase.

For years, everyone has been looking at this aspect of knee replacement surgery and it appears that the hard work is ultimately paying off. Wellresearched and published ‘care pathway’ has enabled the hospital to mobilise patients early and safely. Patients are now well-informed about the whole process of the surgery before getting admitted. Doctors at DR LH Hiranandani Hospital have accelerated post-operative pain management protocols which have helped them to keep the pain at bay, and therefore discharge patients early.

Patients are now allowed to take a shower within 48-72 hours after the procedure. This feature is unique in their practice. A well-informed discharge lesson makes patients feel more confident of looking after themselves at home after their surgery. The hospital believes that life is really made easy for patients and relatives who have supported them in the immediate post-operative phase.

The hospital believes in the saying, ‘A happy patient is the best outcome measure after any surgical procedure’.

Are we ever truly sorry?

Here’s how to make a proper apology when sorry seems to be the hardest word
When it comes to three little words that are difficult to say, “I love you” is perhaps second only to one other phrase in the English language — “I’m sorry”.

A recent YouGov poll revealed that Brits apologise 50 per cent more frequently than Americans. Only the Japanese come close to being as sorry as the British. Some of us are blurting out the S-word more than 20 times a day. But when sorry means so many things, how do you make a proper apology? Author Christine Manby shares some insights:

The tone matters

Bill Clinton apologised to the United States for his affair with Monica Lewinsky. In an address from the White House on August 17, 1998, Clinton said: “Indeed I did have a relationship with Miss Lewinsky that was not appropriate. In fact, it was wrong ... I misled people, including even my wife. I deeply regret that.” The words seemed right, but the tone in which Clinton delivered them led many Americans to believe he wasn’t sorry at all. He had to reiterate the message several times that summer, commenting on the whole ‘sorry’ process to convince people he was actually apologetic.

What makes a good apology?

According to a study by Roy Lewicki, a professor at the Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business, the perfect apology has six components.

The first is the all-important expression of regret, followed by an explanation, an acknowledgement of responsibility, a “declaration of repentance”, an offer to repair damage done and, finally, a direct request for forgiveness.

The hollow apology

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg seemed to take on board Lewicki’s research with his apology regarding the Cambridge Analytica scandal. In March, Zuckerberg took out full page ads in a number of British newspapers, to make his apology public. But was Zuckerberg’s apology all that it seemed? Commentators on social media called it “hollow”. Annabelle Lukin, Associate professor of linguistics at Sydney’s Macquarie University, went further and parsed those apologetic statements.

Writing for The Conversation, Lukin said: “Zuckerberg is using a lovely linguistic trick, a grammatical option called ‘middle voice’ which you shouldn’t fall for. In the grammar of middle voice, an event is construed as if it happens under its own steam.”

Add a touch of humour and humility

An apology delivered with humility and humour often works, as proved by Hugh Grant. After Grant was arrested on Sunset Boulevard in 1995, in the company of a prostitute, it seemed his career as Britain’s favourite bumbling romantic hero was all but over. His relationship with fellow actor Liz Hurley certainly had to be. However, Grant clawed it all back with a textbook-perfect sorry.

When Jay Leno asked Grant about why he’d risked throwing it all away, Grant responded: “Well, it’s not easy. People keep giving me tons of ideas on this one... You know, I was under pressure, or I was overtired, stuff like that... I was lonely, I fell down the stairs as a child, or whatever. But I think that would be rubbish, really, to hide behind something like that. I think you know in life, pretty much, what’s a good thing to do and what’s a bad thing. I did a bad thing, and there you have it.” It worked. Hurley stuck by Grant for another five years. They’re still friends and he’s godfather to her son.

Sound advice for a sound sleep

Getting a stipulated amount of shut eye each day is crucial for a healthy life
Insomnia affects a lot of people, but sleeping pills aren’t the only — or the best — answer. A good sleep routine, exercise and mindfulness are all options to get the restorative sleep you need.

Set up a daily sleep pattern by going to bed at the same time each night and waking up at the same time each morning.

Yes, even on the weekends. Keep your bedroom peaceful, dark and on the cool side. Take out all electronics, and stop using them at least one hour before you turn in. They emit a type of light that interferes with your natural body rhythms, prompting you to stay alert when you should be winding down.

Exercising vigorously in the morning leads to better sleep at night. But if your only free time is later in the day, such workouts don’t seem to interfere with sleep as previously thought. Stubborn sleeplessness may respond to mindfulness meditation, which can focus specifically on insomnia or stress reduction. Mindfulness techniques can target the thought patterns that perpetuate insomnia.

According to research, working with a therapist and practicing meditation at home for 30 to 45 minutes nearly every day helps people get better sleep. There are self-help books also available if you want to try it on your own.

When these techniques aren’t enough to overcome insomnia and get you the sleep you need, you may want to investigate cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT.

By working with this type of trained therapist, you’ll learn how to change the negative thoughts that could be at the root of your sleep problem. In fact, there are even CBT techniques aimed specifically at insomnia.

Top tips to protect your phone from catching fire

While there has been panic over instances of smartphones catching fire or exploding, these practices can ensure that you are safe in your favourite gadget’s company

The group CEO of Malaysian company Cradle Fund, Nazrin Hassan, recently died after his smartphone exploded. Though the exact make of the smartphone is not known, he was reportedly using devices from BlackBerry and Huawei.

And it’s not an isolated incident. There have been reports of smartphones exploding and catching fire from around the world, including India. One of the main reasons for a smartphone exploding is the lithium-ion battery that heats up while charging. But don’t worry; these tips can prevent your handset from turning explosive:

Use the right chargers

Smartphone manufacturers insist that users should only use original chargers. The purpose is not to sell more accessories, but they cannot vouch for the quality and performance of the other chargers. In case the charger gets lost or starts malfunctioning, look for an original charger or one from a company that deals in original components.

Opt for original batteries

Like the chargers, it is essential that a manufacturer-approved battery for the specific model is powering your handset. Also, check for any physical damage or deformity which may lead to battery leak and the possibility of explosion. It is also important to change a smartphone’s old battery in time.

Avoid charging for long

Prolonged charging of your device may reduce the efficiency of the battery. If the battery is 90 per cent charged, don’t charge it any further. Instead let it drain. Avoid leaving your smartphone to charge overnight and remember to unplug once it is charged.

Be careful where you charge

Never charge your phone near water or on the bed. Note that leaving your smartphone under a pillow while it charges can heat it up. Manufacturers also recommend minimising device exposure to direct sunlight and advise against leaving your phone in a hot place like a car’s dashboard, or next to a radiator.

Don’t drop your mobile frequently

It’s hard to predict how a smartphone will react after a hard drop — it depends on the external and internal damage it sustained. An impact can dislocate the internal battery separator between the cathode and anode, leading to an increase in temperature while charging and even fire.

Know the warning signs

If the battery feels extremely hot or swells up, or makes a hissing sound, turn off the device and unplug it immediately from the power source. Keep the device in an isolated area, away from anything flammable and don’t throw it in the trash.

Repair at authorised centres

Indian metros are dotted with smartphone repair shops, but they are often not authorised. Always get your smartphone repaired from an authorised centre or an authorised third-party service centre. Authorised centres ensure your device runs on original software and hardware.

Arms found at Shakeel aide’s home, cops say it’s 1993 cache

‘Were Shipped From Pakistan By Dawood’

Thane:
The Thane police while probing a drug peddling case stumbled upon a cache of arms that they say could have been smuggled into the city for use during the March 12, 1993, serial blasts that killed 257 people and the subsequent riots.

On Saturday, a China-make AK 56 rifle with 95 live rounds, two pistols and 13 bullets were seized from the Goregaon house of fugitive gangster Chhota Shakeel’s associate Naeem Khan, who is lodged in Thane Central jail in an attempt to murder case. The police have arrested Khan’s wife Yasmeen, in whose custody the arms were found.

Inspector Pradeep Sharma said the arms and ammunition are believed to have been shipped from Pakistan by the ISI and Dawood Ibrahim network post the demolition of Babri Masjid. The rifle is a bit rusted but can be used, the police said.

Thane police commissioner Param Bir Singh said this could be the tip of an iceberg. “There were three AK-56 rifles that were untraceable then. We have strong reasons to believe this is one of them,” said Sharma. The rifle was wrapped in an English daily dated October 1, 1997.

“Yasmeen, also known as Deepali Surve, has claimed ignorance and was evasive in her reply when the police questioned her about the rifle in her house. She has been arrested,” said Singh. Yasmeen has been residing in the Bangur Nagar house with her 16-yearold son and six-year-old daughter.

The police raided Khan’s house after two drug peddlers who were arrested on Thursday for possession of cocaine provided a tip-off, said an officer. Zahid Kashmiri (47) and Sanjay Shroff (47) were caught peddling cocaine in Rabodi in Thane, said Sharma. “Along with the AK 56, we have found two pistols made in the US and have seized them,” he added.

Khan was arrested by the Mumbai police’s anti-extortion cell for attempting to murder Shakeel’s former aide Iqbal Attarwala in 2016. “We shall soon approach the court to get the custody of Khan and interrogate him too,” Sharma said. Attarwala was deported from Dubai in 2007 as he was wanted in several criminal cases. Shakeel reportedly ordered a hit on Attarwala following a dispute over a property that was being redeveloped in the suburbs. Shakeel was allegedly not paid the amount he had demanded, the police said. Shakeel assigned Khan to kill Attarwala, said the police.

Make your heart muscles stronger with exercise

Like any other muscle in the body, the heart muscle also needs regular workouts. Regular exercise prevents heart diseases by improving circulation, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, and controlling blood sugar levels in diabetics.

Says Dr Rajesh Rajani (Consultant Cardiologist, Hinduja Hospital and MRC, Mahim, Hinduja Healthcare Surgical, Khar and Consultant (Panel) Cardiologist, Breach Candy Hospital), “Exercise is equally important for people with active heart disease. Exercise can make your heart muscles stronger. It may also help you be more active without chest pain or other symptoms. It may not be advisable to exercise if you have frequent chest pain/ shortness of breath or if you have recently undergone some heart procedure. The best form of exercise for a healthy heart is aerobic exercise. Any activity that you can sustain for more than just a few minutes while your heart, lungs and muscles work overtime in aerobic exercise is commonly called cardio. Start slowly; choose an aerobic activity such as walking, swimming, light jogging or biking. Always do five minutes of stretching or moving around to warm up your muscles and heart. Allow time to cool down after you exercise. No matter what exercise you choose to do, 30 minutes, five days a week is an ideal time to start loving your heart in the form of exercise.”

Here’s why sleep is important for women

Turns out, not just cardiovascular health, but even blood pressure is also affected by the mildest sleep problems in women. According to a study conducted by a medical university based in the US, even mild sleep problems, such as having trouble falling asleep, can raise blood pressure in women. Nearly onethird of adults don’t get enough sleep. For women, the problem may be even bigger. Studies suggested that women are at greater risk for sleep problems, with some researchers reporting that chronic insomnia may be twice as common in women as in men. The new study examined blood pressure and sleep habits in 323 healthy women. Mild sleep disturbances — poor-quality sleep, taking longer to fall asleep, and insomnia — were nearly three times more common than severe sleep disturbances, such as obstructive sleep apnea. Women who had mild sleep problems — including those who slept for seven to nine hours a night, as measured by a wristwatch-like device — were significantly more likely to have elevated blood pressure. Some women allowed the researchers to extract a few endothelial cells from inside an arm vein to look for a pro-inflammatory protein that is implicated in the development of cardiovascular disease.

Obesity may cause early onset of Alzheimer’s

While ageing has been long identified as a significant risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, a new study shows that obesity during middle age may contribute to the early development of the brain disorder, termed as the most common form of dementia.

The results showed that ageing, combined with a high fat and high sugar diet, results in increased inflammation and stress in the hippocampus, responsible for long-term memory and prefrontal cortex responsible for complex cognitive, emotional and behavioural function.

Both brain regions are thought to be involved in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. “This study provides novel information in relation to the mechanistic link between obesity and the transition from adulthood to middle age and signalling cascades that may be related to (Alzheimer’s) pathology later in life,” said researchers, including Rebecca E K MacPherson.

In the study, published in the journal, the team used a mouse model to look at the effects of an obesity-inducing diet on insulin signalling, the process that tells the body how to use sugar and markers of inflammation and cellular stress. One group of mice received a high-fat, high-sugar diet (HFS), while the control group had a normal diet. Mice with HFS demonstrated significantly higher markers of inflammation, insulin resistance and cellular stress in areas of the hippocampus thought to be involved in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

The study also revealed that certain areas of the brain respond differently to risk factors associated with Alzheimer’s. “These results add to our basic understanding of the pathways involved in the early progression of (Alzheimer’s) pathogenesis and demonstrate the negative effects of a HFS diet on both the prefrontal cortex and hippocampal regions,” MacPherson said.
