INDIAN BOY PLANS TO COVER 7 COUNTRIES IN 8 MONTHS ON CYCLE

INDIAN BOY PLANS TO COVER 7 COUNTRIES IN 8 MONTHS ON CYCLE

Chirag Singal, who took up cycling during his college days, wants to finish this tour by April 2014
Chirag Singal, a graduate in psychology, will be traveling to seven countries on his cycle -all the way from Central India to Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and finally Vietnam. The passionate cyclist started his journey on October 6 from his home town Jaipur, and is hoping to complete his adventurous ride in eight months. “I am very passionate about cycling, and thankfully Bangalore, the city where I lived for three years during my college days, has a nice cycling culture and inspired me further,“ says Chirag. The story behind the mission to explore these countries on his cycle started with an interesting incident. Chirag says, “I was in class when our professor asked, `What will you do if you have 1,000km of land? The students gave very generic answers, while I replied, `I don't know how much a thousand kilometers is!' To which my professor said, `Then go and figure it out'. This made me feel that I should seriously try to find that out. I started cycling and joined a group of cyclists in Bangalore, just to know how much a thousand kilometers could be.“ Chirag also took a cycle tour from Bangalore to Jaipur last year. “It took me just 11 days and I had such a great experience. I covered almost 2,300 kilometers from Bangalore to Jaipur in April 2013,“ he says.
It encouraged the cyclist, and he decided to plan an international trip, but he wanted to do it with a group of fellow bikers. “Everyone is not lucky as I am. Since most of them are either busy with their masters programme or with their jobs, they could not afford to go for an eight-monthlong ride. When everybody refused, I decided to go alone. It's fun to be all by yourself and do whatever you feel like,“ admits Chirag.
Exploring new cities and cultures during his ride, he also has plans to visit local schools. “On my way , I will be going to different schools, interacting with students and the faculty to understand the education system of all the countries and know more about the learning process,“ he adds. His long trip will conclude by the end of April next year in Vietnam, from where he will fly back to India.

APPLYING FOR MALE DOMINATED JOBS? PLAYING UP YOUR LOOKS COULD HELP

APPLYING FOR MALE DOMINATED JOBS? PLAYING UP YOUR LOOKS COULD HELP

For attractive women who apply for male-dominated jobs, acknowledging their looks and appearances can put brakes on the male bias against them, says a research.Past research shows that physical beauty can be detrimental to women applying for masculine jobs. But a new study is the first to provide a method for curtailing such types of prejudice against attractive women.

Researchers from a university in the US identified two main types of sexism that cause people to mentally disqualify women from masculine jobs.“While `benevolent sexism' causes men to see women as incapable and in need of protection from job difficulties, `hostile sexism' causes them to see women as violators of gender roles, encroaching on job turf that's rightfully male,“ explains lead study author Stefanie Johnson, assistant professor of management and entrepreneurship.

For the study , 355 participants were divided into three groups. Each group looked at fictitious applications for a construction job opening. “The raters who received the application of the attractive woman, who had acknowledged her appearance, gave higher marks than those who received the application of the attractive woman who hadn't acknowledged either,“ Johnson adds.

Too much of sugar consumption causes memory problems in youngsters

Too much of sugar consumption causes memory problems in youngsters

A new study on rats has revealed that adolescents are at an increased risk of suffering negative health effects from sugarsweetened beverage consumption.According to the study by researchers, adolescent rats that freely consumed large quantities of liquid solutions containing sugar or high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in concentrations comparable to popular sugar-sweet ened beverages experienced memory problems and brain inflammation, and became pre-diabetic. Researcher Scott Kanoski said that the brain is especially vulnerable to dietary influences during critical periods of development, like adolescence. Consuming a diet high in added sugars not only can lead to weight gain and metabolic disturbances, but can also negatively impact our neural functioning and cognitive ability.

wavy hair is a boon

Play up your waves in style

Unlike popular belief, wavy hair is a boon. It not only allows you to try out a plethora of hairstyles, but also looks extremely chic if styled properly. Here are a few ways in which you can play up your wavy hair: Scrunch: Take a dollop of mousse and scrunch your hair. Make a middle partition and scrunch both the halves. Then run through your fingers a couple of times to give it a roughed-up look. Use a hair dryer to get a messed-up look: After you wash your hair, use a blow dryer to add volume to the waves. But instead of a comb, use a brush to give your locks a stylish look. If you are a fan of the hippie look, bend over and give your head a good shake, following it up with a gentle blow-dry.
Add streaks to your waves: If you want to glam up your waves, use hues of brown, honey gold and red. These colours not only up the style quotient, but also suit the Indian skin tone.

10 reasons why you should try yoga

10 reasons why you should try yoga

Are you a die hard gym person? Do you spend hours on the treadmill or lifting weights? The fact is that the benefit you get from spending one hour doing yoga is far more than spending the same time in the gym every day . Holistic health guru Mickey Mehta believes that yoga makes one wholesome and yoga makes one holy . He says that while gyms have a lot of equipment, they only work on the periphery while yoga touches your soul and mind too.“Yoga has a lot of different structures and dimensions to it. There are different organs that get squeezed and that improves their functioning and rejuvenates them with vitality . The life of the organs also gets renewed.“ He says that when one does yoga asanas, there is a stretching and constricting of every nook and corner and micro cell. “And most importantly , there is maximum blood flow to the brain. Yoga helps us in our perception and strategy and improves our nervous system, both sympathetic and parasympathetic. It is ideal for psychosomatic disorders and the emotional quotient and only yoga can guarantee heightened immunity . There is proper secretion of antibodies and there is elimination of toxic waste from the right channel,“ he adds.
Yoga can change not just your body but your brain as well from the first day you begin to practice it, says yoga trainer Yogesh Chavan. He adds, “It does not tire you out, rather, it rejuvenates and energises you.“ Here are a few reasons why you should practice yoga...

1 BECAUSE YOU NEED TO UNPLUG

With most of us glued to our computers all the time, and when off that, we have our phones to check, update, upload, text, email etc. Research has shown that most of us aren't really `in' the moment. We are all the time thinking of deadlines and schedules while going on with daily work and that takes us away from our `present'.Yoga gives us the opportunity to unplug. It makes us focus.

2 BECAUSE YOU CAN BURN MORE

It is said that a 45-minute yoga session is equivalent to two hours in the gym. You end up burning more in much less time.

3 BECAUSE IT IS EASY AND EFFORTLESS

Practising yoga is easy and effortless. You do not need expensive equipment. All you need is a mat and a place where you can roll it out and begin. There are a lot of yoga studios with qualified teachers in the city, and unlike a gym where you have to go and practise, when it comes to yoga you can practise all the asanas on your own, once you learn the proper methods to do them.

4 BECAUSE YOUR BRAIN NEEDS GYMMING TOO

Exercising in the gym can help your body , but doing yoga can help not just your body , but your brain too. Yoga is like a gym for your brain -the workout your mind gets, the extra blood flowing to the remote cells and neurons helps your brain function better. Yoga is said to improve your brain functions, remember things better, focus on your activities and also make you feel energetic and rejuvenated.

5 BECAUSE THE COMFORT IS TO DIE FOR

Yoga outfits are the relaxed, loose-fitted ones that you are most comfortable in. There are also some cool ones with printed messages for youngsters.

6 BECAUSE YOU NEED TO STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE

Asanas often involve holding certain poses for a while and breathing right, and this increases your core strength. Your muscles are toned and strengthened, thanks to the yoga poses. Also, your flexibility increases to a large extent.

7 BECAUSE YOU NEED TO HEAR SILENCE TOO

In the gym, you cannot escape loud music. And gymming without music does not really work. Even when there is no music, you are exposed to the dull buzzing noise of the treadmill and the sudden loud clanks of the weights etc.Traditionally, yoga gives us some quiet and tranquil time. You get to hear the silence and revel in it.

8 BECAUSE YOU NEED THE `METIME'

Yoga can help you make time to look inside your being. It can help you reflect and think. You learn to observe and evaluate yourself and your thoughts. Yoga is about individt ual practice and that means you are not talking while you are doing yoga, unlike when you are gymming.

9 BECAUSE YOU NEED A STRESS BUSTER

Research has proved that yoga is a great stress buster. The slow, rhythmic movements and the deep breathing actually release toxins and make you stress-free.

10 BECAUSE IT IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEART AND BONES

Risks of heart diseases can be lowered, and also bones can be strengthened if yoga is practised regularly.
