Essential oils are taken from a plant’s flowers, leaves, stalks, bark, rind or roots. The oils are mixed with another substance (such as oil, alcohol, or lotion) and then put on the skin, sprayed in the air or inhaled. You can also massage the oils into the skin or pour them into bath water. There is limited scientific evidence to support claims that aromatherapy effectively prevents or cures illness. People with asthma, allergies and pregnant women must avoid use of essential oils.

Q: What does a mattifying gel do? My skin type is oily and acne-prone. — Sebonti
A mattifying gel helps control and absorb excess oil, providing a matte finish to the skin. It also minimises the appearance of enlarged pores. It can be used instead of using powder as a routine. It can also be used as a primer before make-up, especially if you have oily skin.

Q: I have a bath every morning. But I find that by mid-afternoon, I tend to have body odour despite using deodorants. What is the remedy?
— Rohit

Sweat itself does not smell, but it is a good culture for the bacteria that live on our skin. The bacteria break down sweat into aromatic fatty acids, which produce the unpleasant odour. To avoid body odour, avoid wearing synthetic clothes, avoid tight fitting clothes. Armpit hair provides a greater surface area for sweat to adhere to and gives the bacteria a fertile breeding ground. Hence, it is advisable to shave your armpits. It is also essential to wash clothes thoroughly; particularly clothing that comes into contact with sweaty areas such as shirts, socks and undergarments. Avoid certain pungent foods like hot pepper, garlic, onions and certain spices as they may emit odour from the body. Use deodorants with aluminium or zinc as these metals kill odour-causing bacteria. There are some people whose body odour is too strong and deodorants and perfumes don’t work on them. While others have very sensitive skin and these deodorants cause irritation or an allergic reaction. In such cases, they can use antibacterial soaps. Anti-fungal powder such as Abzorb also helps to absorb sweat and gives a feeling of freshness.

Q: My eyelashes are short and sparse. I’ve read about eyelash lengthening serums in magazines. Are they available in India? Can I opt for other such treatments? —Tonima
Bimatropost 0.03% solution is a US FDA approved prescription serum for inadequate eyelashes. It is said to affect the growth (anagen) phase of the eyelash hair cycle in two ways: first, it increases the length of this phase; second, it increases the number of hairs in this growth phase. Hence, the lashes grow thicker and longer. The solution has to be applied to the upper eyelashes every night for about 12 to 16 weeks. It I available in India. You could opt for the same but it has to be prescribed by a dermatologist

Q: I get very easily affected by heat and sun. My skin turns red and burns if exposed to the sun for even a little while. What should i do to take care of my skin? —Priya

Reapply the sunscreen should you be out for more than 3 hours. Choose a sunscreen which is both UVA and UVB protective. Wear a wide rimmed hat if on the beach or even at a hill station. Don’t forget your sunscreen on cloudy days. Have brightly coloured fruits rich in antioxidants daily. Drink plenty of water. Avoid caffeine, aerated drinks, chocolates s much as possible.
