Joint replacement surgeon
and knee specialist Dr Suraj Gurav, M Sorth DN Borth MNAMS and
Fellowship in Joint Replacement, Singapore, says that osteoarthritis is a
disease that involves the damage of the cushioning between the joints
in the knee.“Osteoarthritis results in wear and tear of the knee joint
and further complications call for a Total Knee Replacement (TKR).
Although the cruciate ligament of the knee was initially removed as a
means of treatment, the global trend for TKR now leans towards a
technique that does not involve the cutting of the cruciate
ligament, known as the Cruciate Retaining Arthroplasty (CRA). As a
result, a patient is able to get in and out of a chair more confidently .
Knee bending is physiologically easy and natural. High knee flexion and
sitting cross-legged is possible,“ he says. Dr Suraj's technique
combines CRA with the Triradiate minimally invasive approach. This not
only saves the muscle from being cut but kneecap replacement is also
done.Blood transfusion is prevented here as a drain is not inserted in
the knee.Physiotherapy is markedly reduced.Studies in this technique
have corroborated high success rates and long
lasting results. “It gives me great joy to see my patients able leading
fulfilling lives and yet feel their knees function more naturally than
was earlier,“ says Dr Gurav .
His patient, Shantala Padukone says, “After TKR, I could walk on the same day . Today , I am confident enough to climb stairs and negotiate uneven surfaces on my own. I can even sit cross legged comfortably .“
