How to avoid a knee replacement

Sunanda T can't thank her doctor enough after undergoing a life changing procedure to treat her knees. “I've been given back the confidence to enjoy life like never before. This is possible because my fears and misgivings about knee replacement were alleviated completely ,“ she says.
So, what changed her life? It was a unicompartmental or partial knee resurfacing. Dr Arun Mullaji (Director Chief Surgeon, Mullaji Knee Clinic and visiting consultant at Breach Candy Hospital and Hinduja Healthcare) says, “Not every patient with arthritis needs a total knee replacement; many of these patients who need a surgery might require only unicompartmental knee resurfacing.“

In India, there is a very high prevalence of osteoarthritis in women.Almost 60 per cent of patients undergoing total knee replacement in India today are women. There is a very high prevalence rate of osteoarthritis (almost 43 per cent) in women above 60 years. Recent data from UK suggests that nearly half the patients recommended total knee replacement may benefit from unicompartmental resurfacing.

In India, women tend to present themselves at a very late stage of arthritis to doc tors because of family responsibilities and fears associated with knee replacement. However, latest advances in both surgical procedures and implants have ensured that there can be faster recovery and far better procedural results if the patients do not wait long. Women nowadays are instrumental in building our society . From house chores to office work, they have always been contributing -now it's your turn to give back the woman in your life, her natural stride and pride.
