World Doughnut Day

Did you miss having this treat on World Doughnut Day?
Ismat Tahseen

It's been a part of Hollywood films -remember the dough nut scene in It Happened One Night (1934), the doughnut police officers in Wreck it Ralph or even Tony Stark's doughnut scene in Iron Man 2? Loved by kids and adults, the hole-in-the-middledessert has gone places and how! You now have so many variations to the classic, that there's actually a special day dedicated to this treat. With World Doughnut Day having taken place on June 2, we look at how the sweet dessert is no longer a sidekick for coffee...

HAD DIFFERENTLY ACROSS THE WORLD

Doughnuts are had in a variety of sizes and flavours across the world. The Austrian knockoff for the regular doughnut is the soft and fluffy krapfen, where apricot jam makes for more than half the filling. In Cyprus, people eat fried bulgur ones, stuffed with mushrooms and spices and the German Berliner is a round sugar-dusted treat. The Mexican variation sees it move into a long, ridged shape where it's sprinkled with cinnamon-sugar and dipped into chocolate sauce. Salivating already? Then you must try the golden-brown zeppole from Southern Italy , which is topped with ricotta cheese or cream.Want to go lighter? Bite into the French cruller, a twisty-shaped delight, made with choux dough, with a simple sugar glaze.

THIS IS THE WORLD'S MOST EXPENSIVE DOUGHNUT HYBRID

A London-based eatery has created the world's most expensive `cronut', a doughnut hybrid, for £1,500.

It has saffron infused butter croissant dough, rosé champagne caviar, gold leaf, Tahitian gold vanilla beans and a rare chocolate, in striped layers.
