4-minute bursts of intense exercise may be the secret to longevity

 Synopsis

If you increase your heart rate, will your life span follow?

And adding life to years, not only years to life, is an important aspect of healthy ageing.

If you increase your heart rate, will your life span follow?

That possibility is at the heart of an ambitious new study of exercise and mortality. The study, one of the largest and longest-term experimental examinations to date of exercise and mortality, shows that older men and women who exercise in almost any fashion are relatively unlikely to die prematurely. But if some of that exercise is intense, the study also finds, the risk of early mortality declines even more, and the quality of people’s lives climbs.

Scientists have known for some time, of course, that active people tend also to be long-lived people. According to multiple past studies, regular exercise is strongly associated with greater longevity, even if the exercise amounts to only a few minutes a week.

But almost all of these studies have been observational, meaning they looked at people’s lives at a moment in time, determined how much they moved at that point, and later checked to see whether and when they died. Such studies can pinpoint associations between exercise and life spans, but they cannot prove that moving actually causes people to live longer, only that activity and longevity are linked.

To find out if exercise directly affects life spans, researchers would have to enroll volunteers in long-term, randomized controlled trials, with some people exercising, while others work out differently or not at all. The researchers then would have to follow all of these people for years, until a sufficient number died to allow for statistical comparisons of the groups.

Such studies, however, are dauntingly complicated and expensive, one reason they are rarely done. They may also be limited, since over the course of a typical experiment, few adults may die. This is providential for those who enroll in the study but problematic for the scientists hoping to study mortality; with scant deaths, they cannot tell if exercise is having a meaningful impact on life spans.

Those obstacles did not deter a group of exercise scientists at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway, however. With colleagues from other institutions, they had been studying the impacts of various types of exercise on heart disease and fitness and felt the obvious next step was to look at longevity. So, almost 10 years ago, they began planning the study that would be published in October in The BMJ.

Their first step was to invite every septuagenarian in Trondheim to participate. Mortality studies involving older people are the most likely to return useful data, the scientists reasoned, since, realistically, there will be more deaths among the elderly than the young, making it possible to compare differences in longevity between study groups.

More than 1,500 of the Norwegian men and women accepted. These volunteers were, in general, healthier than most 70-year-olds. Some had heart disease, cancer or other conditions, but most regularly walked or otherwise remained active. Few were obese. All agreed to start and continue to exercise more regularly during the upcoming five years.

The scientists tested the subjects' current aerobic fitness as well as their subjective feelings about the quality of their lives and then randomly assigned them to one of three groups. The first, as a control, agreed to follow standard activity guidelines and walk or otherwise remain in motion for half an hour most days. (The scientists did not feel they could ethically ask their control group to be sedentary for five years.)

Another group began exercising moderately for longer sessions of 50 minutes twice a week. And the third group started a program of twice-weekly high-intensity interval training, or HIIT, during which they cycled or jogged at a strenuous pace for four minutes, followed by four minutes of rest, with that sequence repeated four times.

Almost everyone kept up their assigned exercise routines for five years, an eternity in science, returning periodically to the lab for check-ins, tests and supervised group workouts. During that time, the scientists noted that quite a few of the participants in the control had dabbled with interval-training classes at local gyms, on their own initiative and apparently for fun. The other groups did not alter their routines.

After five years, the researchers checked death registries and found that about 4.6% of all of the original volunteers had died during the study, a lower number than in the wider Norwegian population of 70-year-olds, indicating these active older people were, on the whole, living longer than others of their age.

But they also found interesting, if slight, distinctions between the groups. The men and women in the high-intensity-intervals group were about 2% less likely to have died than those in the control group, and 3% less likely to die than anyone in the longer, moderate-exercise group. People in the moderate group were, in fact, more likely to have died than people in the control group.

The men and women in the interval group also were more fit now and reported greater gains in their quality of life than the other volunteers.

In essence, said Dorthe Stensvold, a researcher at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology who led the new study, intense training — which was part of the routines of both the interval and control groups — provided slightly better protection against premature death than moderate workouts alone.

Of course, exercise was not a panacea, she adds. Some people still sickened and died, whatever their workout program. (No one died while exercising.) This study also focused on Norwegians, who tend to be preternaturally healthy, and most of us, perhaps regrettably, are not Norwegians. We also may not yet be in our 70s.

But Stensvold believes the study’s message can be broadly applicable to almost all of us. “We should try to include some exercise with high intensity,” she said. “Intervals are safe and feasible for most people. And adding life to years, not only years to life, is an important aspect of healthy aging, and the higher fitness and health-related quality of life from HIIT in this study is an important finding.”

Raghav Juyal

‘My parents wanted me to join the army & were shocked that I wanted to become a nachaniya’

He is famous as the ‘King of Slow Motion’ in the world of dance. His stage name ‘Crockroaxz’ best describes his dancing style — as powerful as a crocodile and as swift as a cockroach. Raghav Juyal needs no introduction, his moves and grooves speak for him. The actor dancer recently visited the Bombay Times office, and showed off his talent. And guess what, it’s not just his dance moves that are effortless; he’s a smooth talker, too.

Better known for his flawless reinvention of the slow-motion walk, Raghav comes from a small town in Uttarakhand and draws inspiration from nature. He says, “I have performed a lot of dance forms, but I got popular because of slow motion. I have copied and got inspired by a lot of dances that I have seen and I am not scared to admit that.”

However, as they say, the journey is always more fascinating than the destination. So, how did it all begin? He tells us, “My mother tells me that I started dancing even before I learnt how to walk. I draw inspiration from nature trails and walks — I can choreograph a dance step by watching the manner in which a leaf falls; everything has a distinct form and movement. The slo-mo dance, too, is an outcome of observing nature. I perfected the technique by following international dancers on the internet, but my actual training began in Mumbai.”

However, it was no ‘moonwalk’. Raghav, who’s currently hosting Dance Champions, had to fight against several odds to realise his dreams. He recalls, “My parents were against me pursuing dance.

So, I quit it for a while and joined school unions. I would often end up picking fights, as I didn’t know how else to release pent-up energy. I started staying away from my parents from Class IX because of their lack of support. However, I would still practise dance away from their eyes. After a lot of arguments, they finally allowed me to audition for Dance India Dance in Delhi. They wanted me to either join the army or study law and were shocked that I wanted to become a nachaniya. Things are better now and I have started visiting my parents. I love it there, I prefer it to the city life.”

RAGHAV JUYAL

I was dyslexic and couldn’t fathom why I wasn’t able to calculate numbers. That’s how I tilted towards dance and nautanki: Raghav Juyal

While he has mended fences with his parents, Raghav still has bones to pick with our education system. He says, “I was first exposed to racism in a school in Dehradun. While ‘A’ section consisted of studious children, I was in the ‘B’ section which comprised average students. I was baffled by this arrangement. Another problem was that I was dyslexic and my mother had to take me for counselling. As a child, I couldn’t fathom why I wasn’t able to calculate numbers. In fact, I still can’t do calculations. That’s how I tilted towards dance and nautanki. I was a notorious child and hence, would get punished both at school and home. In fact, I was rusticated from many schools. Today, however, the same schools proudly flaunt that I am their alumni (laughs).”

After carving a niche for himself as a dancer, Raghav took up hosting, where he displayed his comic timing. And now, he is pursuing films. Ask him if his unconventional looks serve as an impediment and he says, “A casting director told me that I need to have well-built body. I am a rebel and I argued with him, but I joined a gym. However, I could not continue beyond a month. I think the concept of fitness is very wrong in our society. I want to be naturally fit with that unconventional touch. I don’t want to do the conventional things that are expected from an actor. You are beautiful as you are. I remain fit by climbing the stairs of my 30-floor building and doing push-ups.”

On the personal front, the dancer-actor is taken. He has been in a relationship for the past three years. “My girlfriend is from Europe and is pursuing theatre there. We meet just twice or thrice a year. It’s indeed difficult to maintain a long-distance relationship, but our love is very strong,” he says.

Two Indian high commission officials missing in Pakistan

Two Indian High Commission officials have been missing from Islamabad, Pakistan, since Monday morning, according to sources.

The officials were out for an official work before they went missing. The Indian government has taken up the matter with Pak authorities.

Tensions had been building between the two countries ever since India expelled two Pakistan officials accused of espionage.

Following the expulsion of Pakistan officials, the Indian diplomats were expecting a reciprocal action from Islamabad. The Indian high commission is finding it difficult to resume normal functioning, faced as Indian diplomats and consular officials are with incessant and aggressive tailing and surveillance.
The latest incident comes weeks after the vehicle of India's Charge d'affaires Gaurav Ahluwalia was chased by Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) member.

A bike-borne man was seen following Ahluwalia's car.

In March, the Indian High Commission in Pakistan sent a strong protest note to the foreign ministry in Islamabad protesting against the continuing harassment of its officers and staff by Pakistani agencies.
According to the note, India cited 13 instances of harassment in March itself and asked Pakistan to stop such incidents and investigate the matter.

India had asked Pakistani authorities to "investigate these incidents urgently and instruct the relevant agencies to ensure that similar incidents do not recur"

On Friday, India registered protest in the form of a note verbale to Pakistan authorities. The government has conveyed to Pakistan that the behaviour of its agencies violated Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961 and also the bilateral 1992 Code of Conduct which the 2 countries signed to provide diplomats immunity from hostilities in ties.

Friends, very simple methods of lighting fires have been invented today, since the invention of the safety match, man has no concern for the safety of fire, but have you ever wondered how the fire will burn when there was no match? This should be especially in the mind of the collectors of matches. Was rubbed with a piece of, the spark from it burned the semal cotton, then the hay was burned, the dung was burned by the fire and the fire was kept safe inside the ashes in the stove. Yes, it was kept on fire for 24 hours, it was extinguished only when a member of that house died. The stove did not burn in that house for 13 days. After purification, fire was taken from the house of the neighbor and re-ignited. This is how matches used to serve human beings from the present to the present human beings.

The trend of wedding ceremonies is changing ... read what is the new trend

Financial discipline to many families
Corona has started to change the trend of wedding ceremonies in rural areas. ERV Wedding ceremonies are celebrated in the presence of thousands of people and at a cost of millions of rupees. Many families have had financial discipline.

The trend of wedding ceremonies Is changing read what is the new trend
Pandharpur (Dist. Solapur): Corona has brought about many social changes. Along with the negativity, some positive changes are also taking place. The extravagance of money laundering and money laundering on the occasion of ERV wedding ceremony has come to a complete halt.
Marriages that take place in the presence of the entire Panchkrushi are now being performed in the presence of only a few people. Corona has changed the trend of wedding ceremonies in rural areas. It saves money and time. As a result, many families, burdened with debt, have resorted to financial discipline.
The Nagtilak family of Kauthali (Tal. Pandharpur) observed the marriage ceremony of Bhairavnath and Pooja in a simple manner today (Tal. 5) in the presence of the people of the house, following all the rules of social distance without any fuss. Bhairavnath, son of Mahadev Nagtilak, a farmer from here, was married to Pooja, daughter of Karan Tathe of Shelve, three months ago. Meanwhile, he was stricken with a corona virus outbreak. The Nagtilak and Tathe families were in a state of confusion. At that time, Patil Madhuri Nagtilak, a woman police officer from here, had discussed with the heads of both the families and appealed to them to get married in a simple manner. Responding to their call, Bhairavnath and Pooja got married in a simple manner today.
Both families are intensive. Yet, they have set an example to others by simply marrying in a coronary setting. Celebrating a simple wedding ceremony has saved both the families about Rs 5 lakh.
Corona has now placed more emphasis on simple wedding ceremonies in rural areas. Therefore, no mandap, no vajantri, no horse, no DJ, no varat, no meal, no crowd of guests, many things like weddings are being celebrated in a family way. Such wedding ceremonies not only save money and time, but also reduce the number of incidents that take place due to prestige. The changing trend of such wedding ceremonies in rural areas has become somewhat pleasant.

These places are known as hot destinations for pre-wedding shoots

We capture every moment on camera to capture the sweet memories of the wedding. However, nowadays there is a growing craze to do pre-wedding shoots to capture pre-wedding memories on camera.

Currently, many weddings are celebrated in grand style. There is a growing trend among the youth to enjoy the pre-wedding moments along with shooting photos and videos of sugarplum, turmeric and wedding ceremonies. The emphasis is on pre-wedding shooting. In the past, the bride and groom did not even meet or talk until they got married. However, today's youth are seen capturing important events in life on camera. This has led to an increase in pre-wedding shootings in the last few years, and the demand for photographers and videographers has also increased.

During the pre-wedding shoot, various photo frames, hats, umbrellas, bikes, bicycles, guitars, various types of poetry as well as wedding date signs are used. It is also filmed while taking photos. Couples are given a choice of location according to budget. Couples are informed about exactly which song to shoot, what location is required for it, what method of draperies will be required.

A pre-wedding gift is a unique gift for the newlyweds. Many prefer to have a ‘pre-wedding shoot’ so that the gift will be remembered forever. Shoots take at least two days if there is a remote location. Shooting on the beach or in the fields in rural areas is preferred.

Our family agreed. Due to stressful schedule, daily communication between husband and wife has come to an end. Stress has to be endured. There are two leisurely moments in such a life. It has been facilitated to be stored digitally along with the mind. It will be a great pleasure to share these memories with your children after 15 years. This issue was also agreed upon by the family. " Relatives ordered photos on WhatsApp. He was happy to see the photos in different poses.

We were both with her

It is difficult, the wedding is not in a full festive mood

Wedding offices are not allowed during lockdown. However, there is still a picture of stealing marriages in some marriage offices. The police and the municipality, however, are conveniently ignoring it. Although the influence of corona has not diminished in Moshi, Charholi and Dighi areas near Alandi, the risk has increased as such incidents are taking place.

The Khed governor's order has allowed the opening of electronics and other types of shops along with essential items from Thursday. However, the police and the municipality have not yet given permission for the marriage to take place from the marriage office. Some enthusiastic congregations, however, have been getting married in Alandi for four days now. Fifteen or twenty brides with the bride and groom, sometimes with three witnesses, come together and get married.

Vegetable sellers are already flocking to Alandi from Moshi, Charholi, Vishrantwadi and Yerawada areas. Cannabis and alcohol are being sold illegally and illegally. It shows that the local administration is not taking action. Now, stealing weddings has raised concerns about the health of local congregations.

The municipal administration did not consider local councilors before making a decision during the lockdown. Vegetable vendors, traffic jams and weddings are currently out of control. Wedding ceremonies can spread the corona. The administration should be careful, otherwise if a corona patient is found in Alandi, the responsibility will be entirely on the administration.
- Vaijayanta Umargekar,
Mayor, Alandi (Tal. Khed)

Can marry locals. However, brides from outside Alandi are not allowed. The municipality has not given any permission to run marriage offices. Weddings will be closed until the lockdown. The same idea has been given to marriage offices. Proper action will be taken if the marriage is reported to be ongoing.

Chief Officer, Alandi Municipality (Tal. Khed)

It has been a tradition to print wedding cards to invite guests and friends to the wedding. Some wedding magazines also become a topic of discussion. Innovative designs for weddings in the homes of film actors, children of bigwigs or celebrities in the village are the talk of the town. In the same way, an official of the Government of Maharashtra has printed a marriage certificate in the format of advertisement of the competitive examination of the State Government. The wedding magazine is currently going viral on social media and is becoming a topic of discussion.

Also, the name of the post and the number of available posts have been prepared. Eligibility is also mentioned. The pre-test for betel nut blasting program is written as. Other events are referred to as the main examination, afternoon session paper 1 - sugarplum, evening session paper 2 - turmeric and appointment ceremony on the wedding date, the venue is called the examination center.

Wedding live and eco-friendly decorations too!!

Preserving the tradition, the youth here have now come up with innovations in wedding ceremonies and they are becoming very popular. In addition to pre-wedding photo sessions, this year's wedding is also in demand for wedding live and eco-friendly theme decorations. Meanwhile, unmarried couples are now focusing on post-wedding photo sessions, a concept that is taking root in the city and the surrounding area.

Although the tradition of conducting wedding ceremonies at home or in temples is still prevalent in some places, now the journey of this ceremony has started as Mars offices, lawns, grounds and hotels. With the changing times and the money, lust and prestige that have come to hand, the importance of smart wedding ceremonies has increased and the demand for wedding planners has increased. In fact, wedding ceremonies have begun to take on a variety of themes. These themes can be applied to everything from invitation cards to menus.

Considering the eco-friendly theme, all the decorations are eco-friendly from the very rangoli at the entrance to the stage in the main pavilion and the dining hall. For this, paper, various fabrics, leaf-flowers are used. Decoration uses "Warli" or other Indian art forms created from many tribal cultures like Dahanu, Talasari, Jawahar, Palghar, Mokhada etc. in the Sahyadri valley.

Themes are usually decided on a color scheme or a period, a culture. Disco, Cowboy, Hawaiian, Western, Rajasthani, Maharashtrian themes are popular. Some of the popular color schemes are Red and White, Red and Yellow, Purple, Only White. Considering the jewelry, new designs are being made with a little change in the traditional jewelry. Demand for this specialty has grown significantly as a result of recent corporate scandals.

Catering has also undergone a lot of changes and there is a huge demand for a variety of displays from welcome to dining. The trend of mobile service has also started now.
- Utkarsh Dudhane, Caterers

Along with pre-wedding shoot, the concept of post-wedding shoot and photo session is now being introduced in the city and the surrounding area. Each photographer's favorite locations are also different. Especially couples who do not want to get married are attracted to this concept and packages ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh are available.

Advantage of e-wedding cards

Times have changed. I got used to giving wedding invitations through social media instead of giving them in person. While using the WhatsApp and Facebook, it came to my mind that it was very easy to connect with friends from all over the world. This e-way that will slow down the pace of mind is getting closer in the wedding ceremony. Enjoy the actual invitation from Skype. Mind, about these e-cards that connect the family ...
The wedding started, the first thing that is done is the lists. It is decided who to invite, from relatives to relatives. Invitations like e-wedding cards, videos, GIFs are given differently than currently printed magazines. There are two main reasons for sending such an invitation. One is if your budget is low or the list of invitees is very large and it is not possible to give an invitation card to everyone in person. For this, the first hammer comes on the list of two invitees and the number of printed magazines. Rather than making such cuts, many families seem to be opting for e-wedding cards.

Features of e-Wedding Cards
The feature of e-Wedding Card is that in a short period of time, the maximum amount of text can be delivered to your customers in different ways, creatively. You can upload e-wedding cards to your site, Facebook event, Facebook page, YouTube or send by e-mail.

Another important advantage of e-wedding cards is that you can design this invitation card even more beautifully with the help of videos, including photographs of the bride and groom and family. If you have done a pre-wedding photo shoot or a family photo shoot, it can be put to good use for e-wedding cards.

If you want to design e-wedding cards, you can design these wedding cards in reputed shops as well as on some websites. The same goes for printed magazines and e-wedding cards. But e-wedding is currently the most effective magazine. You can do as much variety as you want.

If the theme is Wedding, Destination Wedding, e-card can be designed with the theme of the place or according to the profession of the bride and groom. There is a lot of creativity involved in designing these cards. Therefore, the price of these cards ranges from around three thousand to ten-fifteen thousand rupees. So make sure to have a special and different type of e-wedding cards for the wedding.

Coronavirus spread: Foods that can help boost your immunity

Two positive cases of #nCoV19 or Coronavirus have been detected in India (one in Delhi and another in Telangana). While the accurate medical treatment is yet to be discovered to deal with this deadly virus, experts feel that in such cases,” Prevention is better than cure”.In this process watching your daily lifestyle activities and eating right can help a lot. It is important to include a few food items that are high in anti-viral properties and can create a shield around the body in protecting it against all odds. This piece of information talks about those necessary food items that can boost immunity and keep any kind of viral disease at bay.

How to boost your immunity?

According to Delhi based Dr Saras Salil, who runs his own clinic, " It is important to practice basic hygiene like washing hands using antiseptic hand wash. And while travelling use oil-based hand sanitizer. Apart from this, he suggests keeping your hands and fingers away from your mouth, eyes and nose. He mentions, “Food plays a key role in boosting your immunity and that’s why it is suggested to avoid consumption of raw foods including raw meat, raw egg, raw vegetables to safeguard the immunity.” Below mentioned are a few basic food ingredients that are suggested to be consumed regularly to boost immunity.

Tulsi

Known for his anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties, Tulsi must be consumed daily to boost immunity. It is important to have it on an empty stomach. Have 5 tulsi leaves along with 3-4 peppercorns and 1 tsp honey to boost immunity.

Garlic

It is a powerful anti-viral ingredient that can be consumed raw, mashed or can be added to soups and salads. To make a simple home remedy, mix chopped raw garlic and cloves with a tablespoon of raw honey and consume alternate days. It's a fantastic way to boost your immune system.

Berries

Foods rich in resveratrol such as peanuts, pistachios, grapes, red, white wine, blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, and even cocoa and dark chocolate are helpful to fight fungal infection, ultraviolet radiation, stress, and injury. They also protect the body against viral attacks.

Coconut oil

Avoid other variations of oil and use pure cold-pressed coconut oil or even have it raw. Lauric acid and caprylic acid present in it are essential for boosting the immune system against virals.

Ginger

Another ingredient that can help in keeping you safe is ginger. It has anti-viral properties, which when mixed with star anise and honey can help control the side effects. This concoction can be consumed 3-4 times a day.

Star anise

It contains shikimic acid that is used as a base material for the production of Tamiflu, which is used for influenza virus. It is super powerful as an anti-viral. All you need to do is take star anise and boil it in water and add it to your teas like green tea or black tea and consume twice a day.

Vitamin-C rich foods

Amla, red peppers, yellow peppers, oranges, guava and papaya are rich in vitamin C and have anti-oxidant and immunity boosting properties. You must have them daily for best results.

Pandemic fears, shortage woes threaten Indian firms

HIGHER RISK: Coronavirus outbreak is set to disrupt alternative supply sources

New Delhi/Mumbai/Bengaluru : Several China-dependent industries in India are facing critical shortages of raw materials as factories there remain crippled by the deadly coronavirus outbreak for more than a month. To make matters worse, the spread of the disease to other countries is now threatening to disrupt alternative sources of supply.

The World Health Organization’s latest global risk assessment has placed the epidemic at the “highest”, sparking a new problem —a fear psychosis that has rattled financial markets and is likely to squeeze liquidity for companies.

“We have to appreciate that the Indian economy is heavily dependent on China, which, in turn, accounts for 20% of global GDP,” said Arindam Som, an analyst at India Ratings.

“If global growth slows, it will be difficult for India’s economic growth to rise,” he said. “The outbreak has created tremendous uncertainty, with the virus having spread beyond China to countries such as Italy.”

So far, manufacturers of products such as electronics, which are heavily reliant on China, were hoping that factories there would have largely resumed operations. But now all such bets are off.

“I would say that about 90% of factories outside Wuhan (the disease epicentre) have reopened, but they are operating at about 30%-40% of capacities because they don’t have enough workers,” said Vinod Sharma, managing director of Deki Electronics and chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) electronics committee.

“Until now we were missing out on supply of one or two items, but now we are getting into a critical period,” Sharma added.

Electronic items such as mobile phones and even sourcing of motors and compressors for washing machines are facing disruption. Drugmakers and fertilizer companies will face imminent shortages if the situation is not resolved soon, industry executives said. There are also deepening concerns on supply of auto parts from countries such as China. “The situation is changing every day”, which means “we have to pretty much play it by the ear”, said Vikram Kirloskar, CII president and vice chairman of Toyota Kirloskar Motors. The automaker has been able to manage the situation, but the impact would vary for other companies in the sector, he said.

The Association of Indian Forging Industry (AIFI) said in a statement that China comprises 27% of India’s auto component imports.

S. Muralishankar, president of AIFI, said in an interview that forged and machined metal parts are heavy and can be viably imported only by sea.

“Sea shipments are suspended until further notice and airfreight for heavy parts is expensive. Vehicle manufacturers are finding it difficult to plan production beyond the inventory available to them,” he said, estimating that India’s vehicle production in March could be hit by up to 20%.

A Raymond Fasteners India Pvt. Ltd, the local unit of the French supplier of small parts such as connectors and fasteners, is airlifting parts from its plant in China’s Zhenjiang.

“Disruption in parts procurement from China is also an opportunity for Indian suppliers as all major global vehicle manufacturers are now doing risk assessment with supply chain that came down crashing due to the epidemic,” a senior executive at an engine component supplier said on condition of anonymity.

To alleviate the pain of the local industry, the government has introduced measures such as round-the-clock port clearances of goods. Still, imports of vital inputs such as bulk drugs remain a worry.

A senior government official said on condition of anonymity that the aviation ministry is working on a proposal to procure six tonnes of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for Cipla from China.

“Most API manufacturers in China are not working at full capacity, but are working partially, and shipments are coming in,” Cipla’s global chief financial officer, Kedar Upadhye, said in a phone interview.

“We have some stock that we always maintain, which came in handy during this emergency. Whatever vendors have already manufactured, we have requested them to ship,” he said. “As of now there is no problem in terms of API inventory, but in a month or a month and a half, if the plants in China don’t operate fully, then there might be an issue.”

Biocon chairperson and managing director Kiran Mazumdar Shaw said if China remains closed for an extended period of time, it will cause a huge collateral damage to local drug makers.

With the spread of the disease to countries such as Iran, Italy and South Korea, alternative export and import destinations will be harder to find.

Global growth plunging into downturn over coronavirus, OECD says

The coronavirus outbreak is plunging the world economy into its worst downturn since the global financial crisis, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (oecd) warned on Monday, urging governments and central banks to fight back to avoid an even steeper slump.
The global economy is set to grow only 2.4% this year, the lowest since 2009 and down from a forecast of 2.9% in November, the Oecd said in an update of its outlook.
The Paris-based policy forum projected the global economy could recover to 3.3% growth in 2021, assuming the epidemic peaked in China in the first quarter of this year and other outbreaks proved mild and contained.
However, if the virus spreads throughout Asia, Europe and North America, global growth could drop as low as 1.5% this year, the Oecd warned.
"The main message from this downside scenario is that it would put many countries into a recession, which is why we are urging measures to be taken in the affected areas as quickly as possible," Oecd chief economist Laurence Boone told Reuters.
She said the governments needed to support health systems with extra pay or tax relief for workers doing overtime and short-time working schemes for companies struggling with a slump in demand.
Governments could give companies further financial relief by cutting social charges, suspending value-added taxes and providing emergency loans for sectors particularly hard, such as travel, Boone said.
In a nod to some European countries like fiscally conservative Germany, she said governments should not fuss over spending caps while letting programmes like unemployment insurance do their job of softening the blow from the downturn.
Meanwhile, central banks could provide comforting signals to stressed financial markets that they stand ready to further ease monetary policy and provide liquidity to banks if needed.
"We don't want to add a financial crisis to the health crisis," Boone said.
Officials with the US Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of Japan have signalled in recent days that they stand ready to do more if needed.
If the situation deteriorates, a coordinated response of central bank easing and fiscal stimulus amounting to 0.5% of economic output in G20 countries could lead to 1.2% higher growth within two years, the Oecd calculated.
"A G20 coordinated health, fiscal and monetary policy response would not only send a strong confidence message but also multiply the effect of national actions," Boone said.
So far, international coordination appears to be limited to the Group of Seven nations, whose finance ministers are due to hold a conference call this week, French finance minister Bruno Le Maire said on Monday.
In the Oecd's base case, in which the situation does not deteriorate dramatically, China would bear the brunt of the downturn this year, cutting its 2020 forecast to a 30-year low of 4.9%, down from 5.7% in November.
The world's second-biggest economy would rebound to pre-coronavirus levels in 2021 with growth of 6.4%, the Oecd forecast, but not before the impact of its downturn rippled far beyond.
In the euro area, where the number of cases is rising fast, growth was seen at 0.8%, down from 1.1% in November, with Italy seeing flat growth this year as it struggles to contain a jump in cases. Euro zone growth was seen rising to 1.2% in 2021.
The virus was seen having a limited impact on US growth, which was seen at 1.9%, down from 2% in November. Growth would then pick up to 2.1% in 2021, the Oecd forecast.

Charitable hospitals in Mumbai treated only 4.56 lakh poor patients in 11 years

Hospitals across Maharashtra provided concessional treatment to 70,94,547 patients, however, only 4,56,750 of them were treated in Mumbai

Despite having 17% of beds from Maharashtra’s charitable hospitals, city hospitals provide treatment to only 6% underprivileged patients, indicates data from state charity commissioner’s office. This suggests the hospitals are not allotting the mandatory 20% beds to poorer patients at concessional rate or for free.

Data from charity commissioner’s office during, compiled from September 2006 to December 2017, revealed that hospitals across Maharashtra provided concessional treatment to 70,94,547 patients. However, only 4,56,750 of them were treated in Mumbai. This happened despite Mumbai having 74 out of 430 charitable hospitals in the state and 1,768 of the approximately 10,000 reserved beds.

Shivkumar Dighe, charity commissioner, said Mumbai’s share in providing treatment to poor patients across the state should have been higher, as it is home to more than 20 largest charitable hospitals in the state.

“Major issue is lack of awareness among people about the scheme under which they can avail best possible treatment at these hospitals. But in recent years, the number has witnessed a slight increase, as we are creating awareness about the scheme at public hospitals,” said Dighe.

As per provision of section 41AA of the Bombay Public Charitable Trust Act, charitable hospitals have the legal obligation to reserve a fifth of the total number of operational beds for underprivileged patients. Hospitals get tax exemptions and other concessions if they are run by charitable trusts. In return they are supposed to provide subsidised treatment to poor patients. While patients with annual income less than Rs 85,000 are eligible for free treatment, those earning below Rs1.60lakh can receive treatment at a concessional rate.

Dr PM Bhujang, president of Association of Hospitals, a group of 53 not-for-profit charitable institutions in Mumbai, said not a single underprivileged patients was turned down by the hospitals. “One of the reasons for less percentage of patients could be the cost of living in Mumbai. Awareness wise, we have put up boards and large posters in the hospitals to inform people about the scheme,” he added.

However, public health experts said it is the lack of deterrents and monitoring that enables the large charitable hospital to avoid treating these patients. “Charitable hospitals in Mumbai are on par with corporate facilities and considered as the tertiary care medical facilities. It’s sad that they treat only 6% of total patients in the state because all the major charitable hospitals are in Mumbai,” said Abhijeet More, convenor of Jan Aarogya Abhiyan.

More added charitable hospitals, which receive benefits like cheap land, exemption on custom duty for importing medical equipment, concession in electricity and water bills should extend these benefits to poor patients.

The hospitals pay for the treatment though Indigent Patient Fund (IPF) in which 2% of the total patients’ billing (excluding the bill of indigent and weaker section patients) is credited each month.

Cracking the whip

The state has initiated a crackdown on private charitable hospitals for failing to provide treatment to poor patients for free or at concessional rate. Minister of state (MoS) for food and drugs administration (FDA) Madan Yerawar confirmed the development in the legislative council. He named various reputable hospitals against whom action has been initiated for violating norms.
