Often considered a symbol of marriage and for some a much-needed reminder, the traditional wedding band has undergone a makeover. The latest entrant in the market is the anti-cheating ring which is being sold online. Said to prevent married partners from cheating, this unique ring has an engraving which leaves the impression ‘I’m married’ when taken off so as to dissuade potential lovers from thinking the wearer is single. Made of titanium, this ring that retails at a steep 500 dollars is said to be designed for the Tiger Woods’ and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s of the world. However, the question remains as to whether this will really work and if there are potential customers.
Psychotherapist Deepti Makhija says she doubts this will make a difference. “Marriage is not a deterrent anymore for having an affair. In fact, married men and women are more desirable. I think items like these are just for show. If you genuinely want to be loyal, you will. A ring cannot stop you in any way.” Psychiatrist Dr Samir Parikh is of the same opinion. “A relationship runs not because of what checks and balances are put into place to assess the level of commitment and fidelity of the individuals that make a couple, but instead because of the attachment that they form with each other. Trust is built over time and experiences, and merely endorsing a symbol is not enough to ensure that someone would not cheat,” he says. Dr Parikh, however adds that if someone does gift this ring to you it doesn’t imply that they believe you would cheat.
Theatre personality Divya Palat who’s been married for more than six years believes infidelity is in the head. “I don’t think this ring can protect your relationship. If you want to cheat you will. No ring in the world can stop you. I don’t wear my wedding ring while my husband does, but at the same time I would never be unfaithful.” Comedian Cyrus Sahukar says he doesn’t think this ring can stop an affair from happening. “In fact, people could use it to say that they were with someone and recently broke-up.”
