Charu Khandal, 28, out of hospital after four-month battle

After spending four months in a hospital, Charu Khandal, 28, who is paralysed below the neck, was wheeled into the garden of her Andheri building for the first time on Saturday.
Khandal, who was part of the animation team of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Ra.One, suffered a spinal cord injury in March, when a drunk driver rammed his car into the auto-rickshaw she was travelling in.
Khandal was discharged from Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH) on Friday. Given her fondness for nature, her family took her to the building garden to cheer her up.
She will now have to get used to her ground floor apartment in Seven Bungalows, Andheri. The family has rented the flat as it is close to the Andheri hospital, where she has to undergo physiotherapy sessions to regain mobility.
“For the past 15 days, Charu has been on a complete fruit diet. We have consulted dieticians who have chalked out a two-kg fruit meal, which will help her recover faster. On Sunday, we will cook her favourite food,” said Khandal’s fiancé, Sagar Thacker.
According to doctors at KDAH, it will take few more years for Khandal to regain mobility. From Monday, she will undergo a rigorous physiotherapy session for three weeks. “She has tremendous will power, which is helping her recover,” said Dr Abhishek Srivastava, who is treating Khandal. “We have trained the family to assist her at home and make the environment friendly to her needs. She does not require any further surgery.”
The family has refurbished the rented apartment to suit Khandal’s needs.
Doctors are also training Khandal to use a device that will allow her to type using eye and head movements. “Sometimes, she feels a sensation in her hands and can slightly move them. We hope that she develops mobility in her hands soon,” said Thacker.
