Bad times in equity markets will pass

Bad times in equity markets will pass
Raghu Palat
Chinese philosopher Confucius once said, “May you live in interesting times”. These are interesting times without a doubt, especially for those who invest in stock markets because the volatility of the markets must be sending them in a tizzy with the question – should we hang on or should we divest?
Let’s look at the facts. The Sensex has fallen from a high of 29682 on January 29, 2015, to below 24000 last Thursday, only to recover 473 points to close the week at 24435. What we should do is to look at the reasons for this fall and then decide on the next course of action or inaction.
The fall has been on account of three major factors.
First of all, crude oil price is plunging. It is now at its lowest levels since 2003 and one of the reasons is the International Energy Agency opining that the global oil market could drown in oversupply. However, there is a positive too because falling oil prices would mean lower import costs that will cut inflation.
The second reason is China, which has been the economic engine for global growth for two decades. Now, its growth is the lowest in 25 years. Fear of an overnight Chinese sell-off has punctured global optimism and caused global markets to fall significantly. Confidence is extremely fragile at present. As there is global uncertainty, foreign institutional investors are selling rapidly. This month sales of shares by FIIs have been over Rs 7,500 crore. Money is being pulled out of emerging markets rapidly. However, I believe the statement of the governor of the Reserve Bank of India that ‘China not falling off the cliff’ should be heeded. He says that the Chinese authorities should be taken at their word when they say that they are not deliberately depreciating their currency.
Within India, though the finance minister speaks with confidence on the economy and that India can grow at 8-9%, there are concerns that exports have been weak and corporate earnings have not taken off. In addition, there have been delays in reforms and long awaited legislations such as GST. Also, the rupee has fallen against the dollar quite substantially.
It is important to realise that markets rise on perception as do individual shares. When Narendra Modi came into power markets rose in anticipation of huge reforms. However, due to delays and uncertainty of when these reforms would happen the markets fell. I believe that even if the crude oil price is falling and China is in the grips of an economic crisis, the Indian markets would be rising if reforms are being made and overdue pro-growth laws are passed. It is all about perception.
In this scenario let us look at the Indian investor. If you had invested in good, strong companies and you have invested for the long-term using your own savings then you should sit back and not worry. There is no need. As a wiser man once said, “This too will pass.” If, on the other hand, you have borrowed in order to purchase, it would be prudent to sell shares of those companies that are not intrinsically strong as they are likely to sink faster and take more time to rise in price.
Punters and pundits are of course yelling for all those wishing to hear that this is a great opportunity to purchase shares. That is true if you have the money in hand to invest and are prepared to wait till the market once again becomes optimistic, which may take a while. However, do not borrow to buy. Buy only with the money you have to spare. Do not buy shares that are speculative. Leave the small caps alone.

Five firms get Sebi clearance for maiden float, may raise Rs.2.5K cr

New Delhi: As many as five firms, including Mahanagar Gas and Equitas Holding, have received markets regulator Sebi’s approval in New Year to launch their initial public offerings (IPOs) to fund business expansion and meet working capital requirements.
GVR Infra Projects, GNA Axles and Maini Precision Products too have got green signal from Sebi to float their respective initial share-sale programme, according to the data.
Together, these companies are expected to raise at least Rs 2,500 crore, sources said.
Most of these companies plan to utilise IPO proceeds for business expansion as well as working capital requirements. Besides, the firms are taking the IPO route to achieve the benefits of listing the equity shares on the bourses. Some of the firms believe the listing of the equity shares will enhance their brand name and provide liquidity to the existing shareholders. All the five firms, which had filed their draft papers with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) between September-November, received clearance from the regulator in January, as per information available with Sebi.
According to Prime Database managing director Pranav Haldea, the IPO market is expected to see flurry of activity in 2016 as there are 20 companies that have secured Sebi’s approval to raise Rs 7,315 crore, with 11 still on wait-list to mop up Rs 5,445 crore.

Cybercrimals use fake IT emails to hack into computers

There has been an outburst of malicious emails claiming to be from the Income Tax Department of India in the wild. In conversation with Satnam Narang, Senior Security Response Manager, Symantec, Krishna Bahirwani discusses the emails that mimic tax reciepts and contain malicious attachments.

What makes the attacks from these income tax phishing emails different from the others, besides the opportunity that they have exploited?

The cybercriminal has copied the template from a real intimation email sent by the Income Tax Department. None of these emails (sent by scammers) ever ask you for any personal information. They are just simply saying either we took money out of our bank account, for e.g. Rs.90000 or here is your income tax return for the fiscal year, and here is an attachment with the Challan. So both the emails contained the attachments which contained malicious files in them. If you run them, they are key loggers and they sent all that information back to the attackers. So it is not actually requesting any information from you, which I guess is not something that the Indian tax payers know in general.

Is there anything unique about it how they spoofed the addresses because sometimes if you open such emails via Gmail or via a client that has some sort of security built-in, it will tell you that this email is unsafe

Yeah, well I mean well-informed users can tell for sure that it is fake depending on the headers, but to the average user they are not going to check the headers. They will see it says an email id such as admin@cpc.gov.in and they will believe it is coming from the Income Tax Department. So while the emails we have looked at are being sent to enterprises, it is possible that the consumers using Gmail may be flagged that it is potentially a fraudulent email. Certain email providers may actually flag them based on the headers.

Are enterprise email clients a lot weaker than commercial clients like Gmail, in terms of spam detection of fraudulent senders?

Well, it is hard to say. I mean you know my experience is just Symantec, so we do detect them and that is how we are able to come up with this research, but I mean clearly there are some indicators that this is fraudulent. Certain email clients can be set to restrict attachments like when you say, I don’t want a zip file attachment, you can set those parameters. So really ultimately depends on whoever is administrating that the actual software on the gateway level.

How does India rank in terms of being targeted for this particular income tax related fraud email?

Our telemetry shows that 43 percent of these malicious scam emails were delivered to users in India. It also happens that there are other regions also seeing these emails, so you have the US at about 20%, UK at about 14%. It makes sense to me with the receiving them outside of India too because of Indian nationals working in another countries. However, tax related criminal activity happens across the globe. UK, Australia, US we see it everywhere. It was interesting to me because I have never seen anything like this particularly targeting Indians before.

Were you able to tell which country these emails were emerging from?

So I haven’t actually dug into that personally, but some of the malware distributed in this email scam was coded in Visual Basic. Based on our analysis, we believe the malware contains source code copied from other software, as there is a mixture of source code functions in both Hindi and Spanish languages. So clearly the person behind it is not the most sophisticated. They are just piecemealing it together, but regardless of how sophisticated it is, the way that the emails are designed, you know if I send you an email it says Rs.90,000 were deducted from your bank account, clearly you are going to be shocked, surprised and the curiosity might get the best of you and you will actually open that email and then the attachment.

How sophisticated is the key logger?

It is not. Like I said, it is borrowed code from other pieces of software, and is very crude but at the same time really does not matter how sophisticated it is as long it does the job, which is to siphon off the keyboard strokes and send it back to the attacker.

A lot of clients will download the attachment and then scan it before running it. So would it come up in such a scan? Is that definition been added recently or would it have picked it up anyway?

Well, we have different methods of detecting it and obviously if it is detected by our antivirus signatures, it will be flagged or if we have some rules in place for the actual mail client, it will detect it there too. So we are definitely catching these and that is why we are able to put out the research that we did.

Would you have caught it even prior to this research or are you not sure about that?

I am not 100% sure, but the ones that I looked at based on my research, yes.

Does it have any stealth features added to it.

I mean obviously it runs in the background. It is not something that pops and says hey I am a key logger!

Thinnest smartphone with optical zoom is here

Tells you why this phone is a photographer’s delight
Smartphone photography has been picking up a lot in India because of the constantly improving technology and affordable prices. To capture this market, Asus has finally launched the Zenfone Zoom, after over a year of its announcement, The phone is the worlds thinnest smartphone with 3x optical zoom and comes with a 10-element HOYA lens for the 13 megapixel PixelMaster camera. After a weekend’s worth of usage, here is what you need to know.
Build quality and Aesthetics
The Zenfone Zoom is built out of a single block of aluminum and after 15 processes has given you the final metal frame that you see in the Zenfone Zoom. The metalic sides on both sides measure only 5mm. In terms of buttons, you do not have any on the left and on the right you get the volume buttons, the power button, the camera button and record button. The back is made out of leather and looks stunning.
Display
The ZenFone Zoom comes with a 5.5-inch 1920x1080 Full HD IPS with wide 178-degree viewing angles, and a 403ppi pixel density, which actually manages to look pretty good. The display includes ASUS TruVivid technology, which transforms the conventional four-layer design into an innovative two-layer construction with full lamination resulting in a display that is actually vibrant. Asus has also fused the cover glass and the touch panel which makes the touch feel a little closer. The phone is also protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 which is twice as strong as it’s predecessor.
Camera
ZenFone Zoom is the world’s thinnest smartphone optical-zoom smartphone, with a 13MP PixelMaster rear camera and 3X lens in a body that measures just 5mm at the edges. Developed in collaboration with the experts at Hoya, the 10-element lens is a thing of beauty. Glass, synthetic and prismatic lenses are meticulously configured in a dual-prism periscope arrangement to maximize incoming light and capture the best possible photo quality. You also get built-in optical image stabilization for steadier shots every time, even at maximum 3X optical magnification.
There is no reduction in quality while zooming in and the optical image stabilization technology works even while zoomed in. The optical zoom manages to serve it’s purpose by being able to take you closer to the object without having to move while giving you the same quality.
Performance
The ZenFone Zoom comes with a 64-bit Z3590 Intel Super Quad-core Atom processorthat is empowered by Intel’s 22nm Silvermont architecture. Intel’s new Tri-Gate transistors have three times (3X) more surface area than planar transistors, enabling the flow of more electrons to increase computing performance and reduce power leakage.
The phone comes with 4GB of dual-channel LPDDR3 RAM, and 128GB of storage as well as an option to add upto 128 GB via microSD. The phone also features LTE Category 4 networking technology for download speeds up to 250Mbps and a 60ms touch-response time.
Battery
The ZenFone Zoom comes with a decent 3000mAh battery coupled with ASUS BoostMaster technology for turbo-speed charging that takes the battery from zero to 60% in just 39 minutes.
Software
The Zenfone Zoom comes loaded with Android 5.0 and the Asus ZenUI. The user interface has not changed much since the Zenfone 2 and it’s the place where I feel like there is room for some improvement. ZenUI comes with a lot of unwanted apps and gives quite the cluttered out-of-box experience.
The ZenUI Camera app manages to work pretty well. It also comes with the ASUS-exclusive Super Resolution mode that applies multi-frame-fusion technology to create a higher level of detail. Four high-resolution 13MP shots are fused to create a single image with four times greater quality. The Super Resolution shots hence produces images of up to 52MP.
Pricing
The ASUS ZenFone Zoom is now available in India on Flipkart and starting in February 2016, it will be avialable at ASUS Exclusive Stores for a price of Rs. 37,999. Asus also announced a bundle offer at the launch event which includes a tripod and ZenFlash coupled with the Zenfone Zoom for Rs 39,999.
Conclusion
The ZenFone Zoom delivers a good photography experience and the best build quality and aesthetics that we have seen from the company in the smartphone arena. The only issues for me come from the software that could be improved. If you’re willing to look beyond those minor annoyances, the phone although expensive is worth the price.

Nashik farmer, engineer son develop multipurpose, energy-efficient stove

Nashik farmer, engineer son develop multipurpose, energy-efficient stove

A 51-year-old farmer Navnath Kisan Pawar in Kandalwadi village of Nashik district has conceptualised a stove which is not only energy efficient but has multipurpose use. Navnath along with his son Rajendra Pawar developed the stove. His engineer son Rajendra, who has eight patents in the field of energy innovations worked on the technical aspects of the stove.
The heat generated in the traditional stove gets wasted. But this model developed by Navnath uses the same to warm the water.
This stove is simple and has two parts. On the top a utensil can be placed and there is a tube that winds around the stove, which will heat the water.
Rajendra explains, “The inner core structure of the stove is lined by reflectories, for proportional distribution of heat. The tube has a heat exchanger through which the cold water will be passed and the outlet will release hot water. The insulation layer is of glass wool which in one and half inches thickness to avoid loss of heat and the outer body is aluminium or stainless steel.”
The stove can be attached to a water tank with help of pipes and it will pick up cold water. As the density of hot water is less natural circulation will allow thermo siphoning and no pump will be required to lift water.
“This is simple design to achieve maximum utility of the fuel burnt in the stove. In case the stove is used with coal or wood fuel for about one and half to two hours, about 200 litres of water can be heated and used the next day for bath. No extra fuel will be needed to heat this water,” states Rajendra.
His father who was motivated by the experiments that his son does, says, “It’s necessary to conserve fuel as it is a natural source. However, in most of the rural areas food is still cooked on the traditional stove and natural fuel is used. In such a scenario we need to increase the efficiency and save it. This stove will save about 20-25% fuel and increase the efficiency of the stove by 75%.”
Rajendra further adds that his effort further is to improve the air fuel ratio and reduce the pollution caused by the release of carbon dioxide and sulphur in any stove. “I want to fit a solar fan to improve the air fuel ratio and reduce the pollution,” he says.

For these misguided celebs, charity should remain at home

Not every charitable move by celebrities is met with acclaim here are instances of `do good' efforts which drew flak for being a bit too far from doing any real good
If they don’t have bread, let them eat cake,” are said to be the famous (almost) last words of the Queen of France, Marie-Antoinette some months before her subjects beheaded her. And Lindsay Lohan’s latest fiasco of donating a luxury brand blanket to charity proves that even today, no matter how well intentioned, celebrities’ misguided attempts to espouse a cause aren’t above ending up at the Twitter chopping block. LiLo’s not the only one who’s faced flak, however, read on to find out who else did.

GWYNETH'S ATTEMPT AT A NORMAL LIFE

Last April, Gwyneth Paltrow took on the food stamp challenge to raise awareness about families that spent under $30 (over ‘2,000) on food each month. When Paltrow shared an image of her food for the challenge, one site noted, “The spread looks more like it was concocted to be featured on a glossy Instagram page than to provide nutrition. Like everything Paltrow does, it seems to be imbued with evidence of her extravagant wealth.” Social media accounts responded with, “LOL at @GwynethPaltrow thinking (such) families have cars to drive to (high-end food stores),” and, “Being poor and hungry is not an experiment. And we need Gwyneth doing this to care?” It didn’t help that she quit the challenge in four days and ate a whole bag of liquorice after.

HARRISON WAXES FOR FORESTS

Not everything Harrison Ford does is met with critical acclaim. In fact, the actor waxing his chest in 2008 in the name of deforestation had quite the opposite effect. “If you have an interest in Harrison Ford, chest waxing, conservation or totally absurd celebrity stunts that you can't really make fun of because they're for charity , you probably saw (this) video,“ one site wrote, while another added the stunt was so bizarre, viewers would “be unlikely to pay attention to a single word coming out of his mouth.“

LINDSAY'S DESIGNER BRAND CHARITY

“Doesn't matter if it's (a designer brand), it's giv ing to those that need peace of mind in life,“ Lindsay Lohan wrote when she donated a blanket to charity in November. So, what's wrong with that? “Why not buy 1,000 reasonably priced blankets. Would help more,“ “You can get diamonds, stay in five-star hotels and all you can do is send them blankets?“ and, “Please donate me a (designer brand) blan ket, I'm in need,“ was the internet's reply.

ONE DIRECTION TRIES TO MOVE

Last September, One Direction asked fans to send them videos in which they described the kind of world they wanted to live in. The plan was to send the montage to world leaders. It wasn’t long after that a slew of criticism followed with, “I want to live in a world where boy bands don’t force feed political messages,” “Quit sending your ‘message’ to ‘world leaders’ and spend some of your millions to make a difference,” and, “Corporate boy band, let me tell you a secret. The world powers don’t care what average people – of which you are not – want.” As one website summed it up, “They called the internet to action...
and the internet extended its finger in one direction.”

JENNIFER'S WASTEFUL BID TO SAVE WATER

“I take a three-minute shower. I even brush my teeth while I shower. I found out every two minutes in the shower uses as much water as a person in Africa uses for a whole day ,“ Jennifer Aniston revealed in 2009. Apart from the question of how anyone could bathe properly in three minutes while brushing their teeth, her statement raised other worries.“Two minutes of brushing in the shower uses about five gallons of water, whereas two minutes of modest faucet usage only uses about two gallons,“ one site wrote.

An alphabetical guide to feeling happy

You never know, 2016 may just be the year we actually manage to stick to our resolution. Life coach Denise Chilton offers techniques to ensure you keep your spirits up and start to enjoy life.Whether you are 16 or 60, here are 26 ways to feel healthy, happy and back in control!

ACTIVITY

It doesn't have to involve outward bound courses and weekly marathons.

Just taking 15 minutes to walk around the block after work or getting off the bus a stop earlier can get the endorphins -the feel-good hormone -into action.

BREATHE

We all do it, every second of every day.

But have you ever just stopped for a few minutes to notice and focus on your breath? Close your eyes and take your attention to the tip of your nose and just notice. After a few minutes, you will realise your breathing is getting deeper and you will start to feel relaxed.

COMFORT ZONE

Most of us like to be safe and steady but there are benefits in doing some thing that gets us out of our comfort zone. It could just be going to the cinema on your own or learning something new. Initially, you may be apprehensive. But when you've done it, your brain will reap the rewards.

DO

Doing something nice for someone can instantly make us feel good. Helping others may not be in your nature, but thoughtful actions can boost not only your own mood but the person you have helped.

ENERGY LEVELS

Are you an early bird or a night owl? We tend to have a time in the day when our energy levels are at their highest.Whichever you are, always do those tasks you don't really want to when you're at your peak.

FRIENDS

Make time to spend with your radiator friends, who make you feel warm and glowing. If busy schedules keep you apart and it's not always possible to get that cup of coffee together, call them -it'll make you feel instantly better.

GRATITUDE

Focusing on what we have, and not what we don't have, is the secret to happiness. Every day, just before you go to sleep, note three things you are grateful for. It could be your partner, your children, a warm house or a nice meal to come home to.

HEALTHY TREATS

We all know that getting our five a day of vegetables and fruit and staying hydrated is essential to keeping our bodies working. But to maintain a good mood, we need to keep our blood sugars balanced. Always have some healthy treats such as nuts and protein snacks. Mix these with the right fatty oils, omega 3 and 6, and you have food that feeds your brain and balances your mood.

INTERESTS

Getting in touch with the things you love to do just for a few hours can make you feel good and give the brain something other than work and stress to focus on.Finding a new recipe to try, doing craft activity or completing a sudoku it doesn't matter what it is as long as it is something that you really enjoy.

JOURNAL

Writing down your feelings can help you manage emotions, whether they are good, bad or ugly. If you are starting to feel frustrated with someone and want to avoid an outburst, pressing pause to write down how you feel helps get the emotion out in a controlled way.

KINDNESS

Be kind to yourself. We are often our own worst enemy, beating ourselves up because of something that didn't work out the way we wanted it to. So talk kindly to yourself and check on yourself frequently to make sure you are treating yourself kindly.

L AUGHTER

When was the last time you had a real ly good laugh? A real belly laugh that made your sides hurt. Laughter relaxes the whole body, eases anxiety and fear and relieves stress. Not taking yourself too seriously is an instant mood lifter. So, get giggling.

MUSIC

Listening to music can lift our mood instantly -as long as it's the right tune. If things in your life are a bit bumpy, putting on a sad song may only make you feel worse.Scientists have demonstrated that listening to something a bit more upbeat can instantly improve your mood.

NO

Learning to say no can be very liberat ing, leaving a big impact on your mood and making you feel empowered. So, why is it so hard to say? Have a few phrases to hand that help you politely decline invitations or requests you do not want to fulfil. `Thanks for the invite but I won't be able to join you' or `I'd love to help but I just have too much on at the moment' can help!

ORGANISATION

Getting organised and decluttering areas of your life can be very satisfying.

Start small with what seems a favourite area for the new year -your wardrobe.Make it fun and get a friend to help or get the whole family involved. Recycling to a charity means your efforts are making a difference to help others.

PERFECTION

Give yourself permission not to be per fect. So many of us always strive for perfection, and it's exhausting. If you aim to do your best rather than be the best, then you aren't setting yourself up to fail.

QUESTIONS

When you need to make a big life decision, ask yourself positive ques tions. For example, you are offered a new job and the first questions that comes to mind is probably `What if I don't like it?' and `What if I can't do it?' Instead, try something more upbeat, like `What would I do if I knew I couldn't fail?' or `What would I tell my best friend to do in the same situation?' Positive questions are more likely to lead to the right decision.

READING

There is nothing quite like a good book.

Don't just save them for holidays because a book can be a real pick-meup and give you something to look forward to. Go one step further and become a critic by joining a book club or even starting your own.

SILENCING YOUR GREMLIN

We all have a gremlin and they come in many forms. It's the nagging voice in your head that tells you it won't do you any harm to finish the box of chocolates even when you're on a diet. Your gremlin likes to think it's in charge of your moods and will do all it can to sabotage any good feelings. Learn to recognise when it is trying to hijack you and find an activity to distract it.

TIME

If only we had more time... is a phrase we all find ourselves saying, though I'm sure if we did, we would only fill it with more things to do. There are 168 hours in each week and we all make choices how to use those hours. It is essential that you allocate time well. Try to be aware of your time-wasting ways so you know when to tell yourself to snap out of it.

UNUSUAL

Variety is the spice of life, so whether it is adding something totally outrageous to your wardrobe, collecting pictures of funny street signs or playing a random game of Ispy in the office, try doing something that creates fun, no matter how odd.

VICTIM

It is helpful to remember you are human and sometimes, you just won't want to shake off the grump when things are not going your way. Simply give yourself permission to be `a victim' for 10 minutes, then try to get positive again.

WORDS OF INSPIRATION

Some people seem to know just what to say to bring a smile to our face. Check social media; there will be always someone sharing some inspirational thought or picture. Keep a collection that can bring a smile instantly.

X FACTOR

We all have our very own X factor. It may be a talent like singing or something seemingly simple, such as making an amazing roast dinner. If you find yourself looking at others' talents and wishing you were like them, think about your X factor and remember what you can do rather than what you can't.

YOGA

It's one of the most effective exercises for young or old at any level of fitness. You only need a few simple poses that stretch your body and leave you feeling relaxed.

ZZZZZZ

We can become obsessed with how much sleep we get. Experts say when we lie awake at night tossing and turning we may nod off for short periods without realising. Going to bed at the same time each night, as far as possible, helps put your body into a healthy routine. Don't fret if you've become out of sync over the festive period. A few early nights in the new year will help you wake feeling refreshed, rested and ready to face the day ahead.

BLACK RICE, THE LATEST SUPERFOOD

BLACK RICE, THE LATEST SUPERFOOD

Known with varied names like magic rice and forbidden rice, black rice has always seemed exotic. A rarity in the food world, those fascinated with it after knowing its health benefits, now have an option to eat it at a restaurant or just grab a packet from a gourmet supermarket and cook it at home.

A GREAT HEALTH CHOICE

It is the only rice to contain the antioxidant known as anthocyanins, which is found in dark-hued fruits and vegetables like blueberries, blackberries, dark grapes, dark cherries, purple brinjals, purple cabbage and purple corn amongst others.
IC Nutritionist Dhvani Shah says, “Black rice contains high amounts of antioxidants, dietary fibre, minerals and other anti-inflammatory nutrients. It is the richest source of the antioxidant, anthocyanin, which is known to be cancer fighting, beneficial for heart health and imflammatory conditions.“

HAS EXPORT POTENTIAL

Slightly tricky to grow in terms of yield, it is harvested only in India and China. In India, it is mainly grown and consumed in Manipur where it is known as Chakhao. It has cultural and traditional significance to the people of Manipur and other parts of Northeast India where no celebration is complete without a delicious serving of black rice.
On the occasion of the World Food Day in October, the Indian government also put an action plan in place to promote unique vari eties of rice with a prominent status for black rice. As people discover the numerous health benefits that whole grain black rice has to offer and with it being touted as the new cancer fighting super food, which can also prevent heart dis ease, black rice has a good market potential, especially in the overseas markets, as the demand for the same is growing in the USA, Australia and Europe.

WINNER AMONGST THE VARIETY OF RICE

White rice, red rice and brown rice have been around for long but amongst these, black rice might emerge as the clear winner in nutritional and health benefits. Says clinical nutritionist Kanchan Patwardhan, “While polishing white rice, vitamins and minerals especially Vitamin B2, B6 and B12 in large amounts are lost whereas black rice comes packed with micro nutrients. As compared to other varieties of rice, the glycemic index of black rice is 42, which is a very good score for weight watchers and diabetics.“

PLEASANT NUTTY FLAVOUR MAKES IT POPULAR

The texture of black rice is a bit heavier as compared to other varieties of rice but its natural flavour is rich and sweet. It has a pleasant, nutty flavour, best enjoyed with coconut milk and in sweetened desserts, particularly rice puddings. Black in colour when harvested, once cooked it turns deep purple. Popular in cuisines in Kerala and North Bengal, it is also a good option to make European salads or Italian dishes like risotto. Currently available at high-end restaurants, it seems to be steadily gathering support. “I had the black sticky rice soup with palm sugar at one of the restaurants in town. It was purple in colour and had the texture of kheer but the taste was completely different. After knowing the properties, I am going to try and make it at home too soon,“ says homemaker Shanti Sen.

No smoking resolution affects city vendors, only for a week or two

No smoking resolution affects city vendors, only for a week or two

Thought that your resolution of kicking the butt was strong enough?

Think again. At least for a large section of people, most resolutions are made only to be broken. And the city's start-of-theyear vow of `no smoking' is only a temporary thing, lasting not more than a fortnight. Local paan waalas and stall owners admit that though they see a dip in their sales thanks to these resolutions, they rarely see their customers quit entirely .

`IT'S NOT EASY TO QUIT'

Babulnath Tiwarti, of a paan stall at Bhulabhai Desai Road, says there is at least a 25 per cent decline in business owing to this.“People make up their minds to quit at the start of the new year and we brace ourselves, as this does affect business. But this is not for long. Yes, some do manage to quit, but most people are back soon,“ he says. For some, it's not even a week and the resolve is broken in just a few days. Says Satyam Chaurasia of a paan stall near Kandivali, “Log New Year pey pehley cigarette chhodne ki qasam kha letey hain, lekin itney jaldi tod dete hain; kya karein aadat se majboor hain.“ Cigarette stall owner Mohan Shetty from Vile Parle says it's a social thing, so it's not easy to let go. “Mostly office-goers try and reduce it -they go from one packet to a few loose cigarettes and tell me they want to cut it down further, but it's difficult for them. The younger lot find it difficult to do even that.“
It's about mind control, believes Ganesh Chaurasia of a stall in Vile Parle West.“People say they want to quit every New Year. Yeh mahine bhar ka naatak hota hain but business does get affected. But then vaapas pee letey hain. They say one cigarette is harmless and with that, they start all over again,“ he says. E CIGS IN DEMAND Smokers also try electronic cigarettes to help them quit. “Some people want to try an e-cig before they can quit completely and they make enquiries on how and where to get these,“ says e-retailer Bhargav Goluguntla from Bangalore.

Dos and don'ts for slipped disc and severe back pain

Dos and don'ts for slipped disc and severe back pain

A slipped (prolapsed) disc often causes severe lower back pain. Although patients often talk about having a slipped disc, nothing in your spine has actually slipped out of place. Having a slipped disc means that one of the discs, which sits between each of the bones in your spine, has been damaged. When the disc is damaged, the soft gel-like inner pad of the disc squeezes out through a weak point in the outer layer, causing a bulge that often presses on nearby spinal nerves.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

The medical ream at Qi Spine Research Academy recommends the following points... Studies have shown that it is important for one to remain active and keep up with your normal activities as much as possible.
The key to complete success in treating low back injury is to identify the cause of the problem. In over 90 per cent of cases, the cause is due to weak muscles that cannot take the load hence, causing injury .Treat the muscle first.
Drugs and painkillers are only suppressants and not the cure. If the underlying cause is not treated then the symptoms can resurface.
Surgery is only to be advised in severe cases where the bowel or bladder control is compromised.Even in such cases, conservative treatment must be attempted before recommending surgery . Medical guidelines strongly discourage the use of MRI and X-ray in diagnosing low back pain because they may produce false alarms. Signs of disc degeneration are present in a very high percentage in healthy people who have no problem at all. Many imaging-based degenerative features are likely a part of normal ageing and not associated with pain.
Surgery is not the fastest route. It can take from three to 12 months for complete recovery post a surgery. Most slipped disc cases will selfheal in four to six weeks but have chances of recurrence if the underlying cause is not treated. The medical team of Musculoskeletal Spine Specialists at Qi Spine Clinic has been at the forefront of studying spinal disease in India. The clinic diagnoses and treats back pain with the help of specialised techniques and precise non-invasive technology. The advanced methodology of functional testing of spinal muscles identifies deficiencies and weaknesses, which allows for precise targeted treatment. The team across 20 clinics in Mumbai, Delhi and Pune has now enabled over 2,000 people to avoid spine surgery.

How to deal with rosacea

How to deal with rosacea

While most of us get the odd pimple or a sudden breakout due to hormonal changes, a skin condition that affects a considerable number of people is rosacea. Predominantly affecting the facial area, it causes your skin to redden, starting like a blush and then appearing to cover the face in a reddish or pinkish tinge. It is a common skin condition, which unfortunately is chronic but can be controlled. Although it may seem harmless, rosacea can cause a number of problems for an individual suffering from it. While a red face may seem innocuous, other symptoms include small pimples, an enlarged, red nose and even swollen eyelids or conjunctivitis.
Rosacea can also affect the areas around your neck, back and chest. Skin experts say that it occurs when there is a disorder in your blood vessels that causes the redness and at times, even pus filled boils. Other triggers include high stress levels and fungal infections, so ensure that you find ways to destress and maintain good hygiene standards. Also, since dryness, itchiness and swelling are common symptoms of rosacea, ensure that you use a good moisturiser to keep your skin clean, nourished and healthy. There are a number of medicated creams or gels available in the market but always use those prescribed by your dermatologist. Self medicating might cause more harm than good.
