Dos and don'ts for slipped disc and severe back pain

Dos and don'ts for slipped disc and severe back pain

A slipped (prolapsed) disc often causes severe lower back pain. Although patients often talk about having a slipped disc, nothing in your spine has actually slipped out of place. Having a slipped disc means that one of the discs, which sits between each of the bones in your spine, has been damaged. When the disc is damaged, the soft gel-like inner pad of the disc squeezes out through a weak point in the outer layer, causing a bulge that often presses on nearby spinal nerves.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

The medical ream at Qi Spine Research Academy recommends the following points... Studies have shown that it is important for one to remain active and keep up with your normal activities as much as possible.
The key to complete success in treating low back injury is to identify the cause of the problem. In over 90 per cent of cases, the cause is due to weak muscles that cannot take the load hence, causing injury .Treat the muscle first.
Drugs and painkillers are only suppressants and not the cure. If the underlying cause is not treated then the symptoms can resurface.
Surgery is only to be advised in severe cases where the bowel or bladder control is compromised.Even in such cases, conservative treatment must be attempted before recommending surgery . Medical guidelines strongly discourage the use of MRI and X-ray in diagnosing low back pain because they may produce false alarms. Signs of disc degeneration are present in a very high percentage in healthy people who have no problem at all. Many imaging-based degenerative features are likely a part of normal ageing and not associated with pain.
Surgery is not the fastest route. It can take from three to 12 months for complete recovery post a surgery. Most slipped disc cases will selfheal in four to six weeks but have chances of recurrence if the underlying cause is not treated. The medical team of Musculoskeletal Spine Specialists at Qi Spine Clinic has been at the forefront of studying spinal disease in India. The clinic diagnoses and treats back pain with the help of specialised techniques and precise non-invasive technology. The advanced methodology of functional testing of spinal muscles identifies deficiencies and weaknesses, which allows for precise targeted treatment. The team across 20 clinics in Mumbai, Delhi and Pune has now enabled over 2,000 people to avoid spine surgery.
