While its common for humans to face the law for com mitting a crime, what's unheard of is animals be ing produced in court and tried for offence. The recent example is that of 18 male lions in Gujarat that are being put on trial for murder by the Government of India and if found guilty, will be serving a life sentence in a zoo. Here are a few other such examples.
ELEPHANT PRODUCED IN COURT FOR KILLING THREE PEOPLE
Ramachandran, an elephant in Kerala was arrested for having killed three people in 2013. A criminal case was filed against it and the animal was kept under supervision, following a hefty payment which the owner had to make for the animal to be released.
MONKEY HELD FOR CROSSING INDIAN BORDER
In 2011, Pakistani officials arrested a monkey which was believed to have crossed over from India into Pakistan. The monkey was captured by wildlife officials. It was then taken to a zoo in Pakistan and kept there.
RUSSIAN CAT HELD OVER SMUGGLING PHONE INSIDE A PRISON
In June 2013, a criminal case was filed against a cat after it was caught trying to smuggle in mobile phones and charg ers inside a Russian prison.
GOATS ARRESTED FOR DAMAGING POLICE CAR
In June 2013, three goats were detained by police officials after they were accused of trying to damage a police vehicle.Apparently , 12 goats climbed onto a brand new police car and damaged the wipers and glass, thereby scratching the paint of the body and bonnet of the vehicle. The animals were held and put into a cage thereafter. However, they were later released to the Society for Prevention to Cruelty to Animals.
In another instance, a goat was arrested for eating flowers. The case soon received a lot of public interest. However, when the goat was brought to the court, the magistrate dismissed the case against lack of evidence!
COW HELD FOR MURDER
In Southwest Nigeria, a cow was arrested because it was believed to have been involved in a messy murder case. No human arrests were made but the cow was detained and dragged to the police station.
PIGEON HELD FOR SPYING
In 2010, Indian police held a pigeon which was believed to have flown in from Pakistan and was arrested for spying. The pigeon was caught with a ring around its foot and a Pakistani phone number and address stamped on its body with red ink. However, no trace of any note could be found on it and was eventually released.
DONKEY JAILED FOR ASSAULT
In 2008, a donkey was believed to have kicked two men in Mexico. It was kept in a cell where people who are normally caught for drinking and causing other disturbances are placed. The donkey was made to be there until the owner agreed to pay the medical charges.
