While Sairat is the highest
gross ing Marathi film, certain issues from the past seem to still haunt
the director, Nagraj Manjule, who's been in the limelight since his big
release.Rumours about Nagraj's ex-wife Sunita planning to file a
domestic violence case against him have been claimed as untrue by her.
It was also reported earlier that Sunita was planning to re-open the
couple's divorce case, but she denies it saying, “We are not pursuing
any case against him.“ The couple legally divorced in 2014, the same
year that his first feature film Fandry released. Sunita's mother
says,“For 15 years, my daughter toiled hard in his home, took care of
his family and all that we got after the divorce was a measly sum of `7
lakh. Today , he is earning crores, but not once has he thought of
Sunita or how she must be living her life.“
Sunita works as a house help in Pune today . While her close ones swear by the troubles she has endured, some feel otherwise. A source says, “This is all a publicity stunt. They have been divorced legally two years ago and suddenly because Sairat is doing so well and Nagraj is the talk of the town, the family is using it to their advantage by doing all this.“
Reports about Sunita enduring domestic abuse while she was married have also surfaced. Quiz her about this and she says, “He didn't want to have children because he wanted to focus on his career. I aborted thrice during our time together at his insistence.“ Her mother adds, “We are illiterate people (Sunita has studied only till class VIII) and are unfamiliar with the legal procedure. He cheated us and got the divorce papers signed.“ When Sunita was asked if Nagraj has met her in the recent past, she responded, “He hardly is in Pune. He travels to London and America now.“ So are they expecting something from Nagraj? “Sunita still considers him as her husband. Ti tyachya navryacha kunku lavte (she still applies vermillion on her forehead). All we want is for him to accept our presence.“
Throughout this controversy , the Sairat director has kept quiet on his side of the story and not responded to the accusations levelled against him. We tried to get in touch with him again, but we didn't get a response at the the time of going to press.
