With a range of options available in the market to choose from, it can get confusing to pick the right yoga mat. Here are some important things to keep in mind...
Get the right thickness: The thickness of your yoga mat decides how comfortable it is. If it's too thin, your knee or ankles may get injured. On the other hand, if it is too thick, it'll make it difficult for you to do certain poses and make you wobbly. It will also be bulky, making it difficult to store when not in use. It is best to go for a standard yoga mat, which is about 18th of an inch thick.
Material of the yoga mat: The material comprises the texture, stickiness and sponginess (how much it yields to pressure). Almost all standard yoga mats are made of PVC (vinyl), though newer options include natural and recycled rubber and even organic cotton. A PVC yoga mat is good and will last for more than a decade if used properly. The sponginess varies with different blends of materials, but PVC is the spongiest.
Stickiness: PVC yoga mats are the stickiest, but only when they are clean. They keep you from sliding while doing certain asanas.
Texture: If you don't like PVC mats, the next best option for you is a rubber, jute or cotton yoga mat. These have a slightly raised pattern and provide an extra grip, which almost eliminates the chances of slipping and sliding off. Remember, the mat should also have enough grip with the floor as well.
Eco-friendly: You could also use yoga mats that are PVC-free and made from a natural plant-based material such as rubber or jute.
