What kind of a party dresser are you?

Designers state what elements scream 'wannabe', 'drama queen' and of course, 'elegant' when you deck up for a party

Sure, you've felt as if all eyes are on you when you enter a party, but have you wondered what those satres or subtle glances could mean? Designers say that the way you dress that highlights your entrance end up saying a lot about your personality. Anything done in moderation and with a touch of class is appreciated, says designer Swapnil Shinde. "But if you turn up in an all feather ensemble and it's not Halloween or a costume party, then you are obviously screaming for attention. The same goes with sporting way too many colours in one outfit. Though going subtle is in, there's nothing wrong with indulging in a splash of colour. But you have to know how to balance it. Combining gold, purple, rust, fuchsia, velvety blue and crimson all in one ensemble means you are being stared at for all the wrong reasons," says Swapnil.
Designer Amalraj Sengupta says that he just doesn't understand the city's obsession with boots. "Mumbai barely has a winter. It screams wannabe to me, unless you bring them out in the few partially cold days that the city witnesses. Ditto with leather jackets… I see celebrities step out of their SUVs in the blaring sun, armed with leather jackets," says Amalraj.
Designer Raakesh Agarvwal says that wearing flowy gowns to casual get togethers probably means that the person in question desperately needs a stylist or that she is just an attention seeker. "Or maybe she's just a drama queen, who likes everything over the top and can't give up her share of the limelight at any cost," says Raakesh.
While there are a handful of people who feel the need to flaunt an extremely short number, just for the heck of it, maybe to prove that they are 'in vogue' too, there are those who dress effortlessly and yet look elegant. "I think some people just buckle under the pressure of being fashionable and end up showing off the mounting cottage cheese on their thighs in the bargain. In such situations, it makes sense to pick outfits that cover as much as they can," says designer Kaanch Advani.
So, what exactly spells elegance? "If your attitude reflects in your dressing, you will walk away with brownie points automatically," says designer Rimi Nayak. "A short floral number, with a casual jacket thrown over and hair let loose and sandals or flip flops... and you can still look like a million bucks, if you have the attitude to carry it off. It's not that there isn't any thought put into the ensemble (although it is intended to look effortless), it just says that the person in question doesn't want to come across as someone who is vain," says Rimi adding that when in doubt stick to denims and a fancy tee for casual occasions and a sari with minimal bling on it for more formal events. "It's okay to be a tad bit understated than over the top," she reasons.
