'Invest in a sari'

It's the wedding season and the 'queen of drapes', designer Shaina NC gets talking about the upcoming bridal trends

Fashion designer Shaina NC has been in the business for the last 18 years. Besides dressing up celebrities, she also puts together a fashion show that raises money for various causes and now she is all set to open a new store in the city.
Talking about the latest bridal trends, she says, "I feel one should invest money in saris rather than ghagras, as saris can later be altered into different forms — dresses, kurtas and so on. It gives you value for the amount you put in. Also, besides the regular colours this season, shades like corals, yellows and greens will be super hot. Sheers, tulle and lace blouses will be in and so will detachable borders. In terms of accessories, attached pearl satchels is what we are doing. Also, I feel jadau pieces are better than chunky jewellery as nobody wants the bride to look like a mannequin in a fashion store," says Shaina.
The designer adds that young women love to play with drapes and are open to trying out new styles and colours. "Hence, I have created lines that will suit their fashion sense. My collection is an ode to the sari. They come in unique draping styles — lungi, sarong, skirt, churidar, double sari and also sari draped like a stole. It is very user-friendly and I have used lots of coral, lime yellows, and onion reds in this line. The USP of the line is that it is easy to wear and really accessible," she explains.
