Drop that bad habit for your own good

Drop that bad habit for your own good

Medical science has made much progress over the years in combating cancer. What was once a virtual death sentence is not necessarily so now, particularly if the disease is detected at an early stage. As a result, the fear of cancer in the minds of the general public has receded. But make no mistake: the threat from the disease remains strong as ever. Indeed, the incidence of cancer continues to rise. What is more worrying is that people are falling prey to the deadly disease at younger ages. And doctors warn that these numbers will only grow, unless we pay heed to the dangers.
It should come as no surprise to learn that modern lifestyles, particularly the bad habits that they bring, are at least partly to blame. While everyone knows that smoking and chewing tobacco are prime causes of cancer, fewer people realise that even other unhealthy habits — such as not exercising regularly, or popping hormonal pills — can also have the same result. What’s more, every individual who has one or the other dangerous habit tends to think that she will somehow buck the trend.
While causes such as atmospheric pollution may not be within the individual’s control, others clearly are. All it needs is a strong will. So, as Cancer Week begins, simply make up your mind to live a healthier life and stay away from tobacco, alcohol and a sedentary lifestyle. You will improve your chances of escaping the disease.
