Cancer is increasingly targeting the youth, say oncologists. On World Cancer Day, doctors say, the biggest concern is people aged between 35 and 40 are getting detected with head, neck or colon cancers. Most cancers are due to unhealthy habits, such as not exercising, popping hormonal pills, smoking, and chewing tobacco.
Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Bhopal, Ahmedabad and Karunagappally are the six cancer registry centres where lung cancer has topped among men, while oral cancer is second. Among women, breast cancer tops.
Dr Purvish Parikh, retired head of medical oncology department at Tata hospital and present managing trustee of NGO Indian co-operative oncology network, says, “Lung cancer, cancers under the head and neck category (eg oral), breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer and colorectal cancer are all lifestyle-related. People need to be vigilant for the early symptoms and get an annual check-up done to detect the signs.”
“The number of youth having these cancers will double in the next 10 years as most have an unhealthy lifestyle,” says Parikh. “Lung cancer tops among men in urban cities like Mumbai. The main culprit is tobacco.” More than 50,000 lung cancer cases are diagnosed every year, with about 80% of them at an advanced stage.
Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, associate professor at Tata hospital’s head and neck department, says, “Fifty people out of every 1 lakh suffer from head and neck cancers, and one-third of these are aged below 35. This is because the youth have gotten used to a reckless and unhealthy lifestyle, and find it difficult to change it.”
Breast cancer too is breaking the age and number barrier. Every year, 3,800 women are getting detected with it as against the 1,500 five years ago, say doctors. Dr Sanjay Sharma from the Breast Cancer Foundation says, “Its leading causes are late marriages, late childbearing and no breastfeeding. Also, in the western countries, women aged between 55 and 70 get breast cancer, but in India, women are getting it a decade earlier.”
