International Beer Day is on Sunday. Raise a toast with these must-try foreign brews
International Beer Day (IBD) this year coincides with Friendship Day on
August 5. And what better reason could one get to indulge in some beer
drinking and buddy banter? Since one of the few rules of IBD involves
experiencing brewskis from all over the world, we got Pradeep Gidwani,
the owner of Bandra’s new pub, The Pint Room, to recommend five beers
that top his list and suburban bar. Here are the five concoctions that
the beer lover and former managing director of Carlsberg and Foster’s,
insists you must taste before you die.
Chimay Blue
These are some of the finest beers in the world. The Trappist beer is
brewed within the walls of Trappist monasteries in Belgium under the
control and responsibility of the monks. The revenue (from the sales of
the beers) is dedicated to social service. Chimay Blue contains 9 per
cent abv (alcohol by volume) and is relatively dry with a caramel note.
Hoegaarden Wit Bier
The original white beer from Belgium is the oldest and most famous of
its kind across the world. Its aroma of orange peels, coriander and
spice makes its taste unique. It is soft, light, moderately sweet and
sour, with a subtle citrus flavour. It is best served and enjoyed
chilled in its signature hexagonal glass.
Fuller’s London Pride
This is UK’s leading premium ale. Known and loved for its
distinctive and rounded flavour, London Pride is an award-winning beer. A
rich, smooth and wonderfully balanced ale, its distinctive malty base
is complemented nicely by its well-developed hop character.
Murphy’s Irish Stout
It is one of the best-known stout beers in the world. Brewed in
Ireland, its flavour is evocative of caramel and malt. It is often
described as a distant relative of “chocolate milk”. Murphy’s is a dark
(black) beer and is served with an inch of foam (the head on top).
Schneider Weisse
Brewed in Bavaria, in Germany’s oldest wheat brewery, this
ambermahogany coloured wheat beer goes well with hearty food. It has
nuances of ripe bananas, cloves, nutmeg and nuts, which also help create
the aroma. It is a full-bodied, and sparkling beer.
