25 years and still going strong
…fashion designer Suneet Varma describes it as having survived with his sanity intact

Noted fashion designer Suneet Varma believes in constantly upgrading with the changing times. Having completed 25 years in the industry, the fashion maverick’s still eager to explore fashion’s new avenues to making fabulous garments. Known for his eye for detailed and exhaustive embroidery techniques on various fabrics, Suneet is now moving into new areas of designing, like bringing Armani Junior to India, working as a hotel’s creative director and also making interiors for a ultra luxurious car. After 25 years, what is that he would like to change? “It just feels like it’s been 15 years , but in reality it’s been 25 years of having survived in this industry with my sanity intact (laughs). And frankly, I do not wish to change even a single day of my life here,” says Suneet, who’s planned a collection that timelines his journey in the fashion world. “When I thought of creating a collection that marks my 25 years in fashion, I thought why not go for a couture collection that is affordable, very spring/summer and goes beyond heavy-duty embellishments. This way, everyone who wishes, can have a Suneet Varma outfit in their wardrobe,” he reveals.

The designer does not believe in restricting his designing to fashion alone. He says, “The idea is to think a little bit ahead and be creative. For me, creativity goes beyond making saris or dresses. One has to be creative enough with the other businesses to stay ahead. My work is my guardian angel, and I guess that has enabled the student in me to learn more and continue to do that as much as I can.”

Is there anything else that the designer has on his wish-list? “I want to make a movie. Yes, like my shows where I hardly get time to play around I still create the ambience, the feelings and story I want to showcase. But nothing better than working on a huge canvas like films. And I want to make a film on love! Love for life, a person or work. And I feel if I get enough encouragement from the universe then I shall surely follow my passion of making a movie soon!” says Suneet.
