Hollywood’s going gaga over pyjama suits that are fast replacing traditional power suits. Desi designers discuss the trend

Looks like Hollywood’s fashionistas are loving the just-out-of-bed look, judging by their sudden fascination with pyjama suits. PJs, as they’ve always been referred to as, are the new power suits, fast replacing the traditional suits that once made the fashion circle sit up and notice. Very recently, singer Rihanna turned up in an Emilio Pucci pyjama suit on the red carpet and set the ball rolling. She’s however not the first one to don this look. Rihanna follows a long line of hotties including Elisa Sednaoui, Salma Hayek, Ulyana Sergeenko, Sofia Coppola, Viviana Volpicella, and Caroline Sieber who turned their traditional sleepwear into luxurious daytime attire.
Back in India, our designers feel that the trend may take a while before it manages to catch up with the frenzy abroad. Fashion designer Lina Tipnis says, “I think Caucasian people can carry it off really well. PJs in draped chiffons, satin, and georgette look lovely. There’s an element of luxury in this kind of attire. Somebody like actor Deepika Padukone will look gorgeous in PJs. Proportionate body types are perfect for pyjama suits. For a discerning fashionista, it’s a must have in the wardrobe right now.”
Designer Gayatri Khanna however is not much in favour of PJs. “Jumpsuits are better. Honestly, I’m not a fan of same printed pants and top,” she confesses, but quickly adds that one has to be slim to carry it off well. “We are generally pear shaped, so it’s a risky trend for us to flaunt. I’d say, if you’re wearing them, do clinch it with a belt; don’t let it hang loose,” says the designer.
Most fashionistas here seem sceptical about the PJs because if not worn right, they have a tendency to look like the nightsuit. But take a cue from the international celebs and you know exactly how to nail the look. Designer Rimi Nayak says, “It should not look like a nightdress; so you have to select the right print. Also, keep in mind the fabric to sport, because a little bit of fluidity is nice. It won’t look good if the fabric is stiff or crisp. Go for PJs in pretty prints in fabrics, like georgette that has a lovely flow.”
