Mumbai City museum offers kids Harappan holidays this summer

City museum offers kids Harappan holidays this summer

The city museum is now offering kids ‘Harappan Holidays’. Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sangrahlaya, formerly the Prince of Wales Museum, has come up with a unique holiday project where kids learn to have fun while dabbling in heritage and archaeology.
The project begins from April 25th and continues till May 11 and includes a host of programmes where children gain the experience of digging demo archaeological excavations, recreating Indus Valley jewellery and Harappan pottery among other things. Also ancient star-gazing is on the agenda with Nehru Planetarium experts to tell kids stories about the role played by the sky in the culture of the past peoples.
The museum will be creating a simulated archaeological excavation where young archaeologists will solve mysteries and answer age old questions related to the Harappan civilisation. Children can also try their hand at making toys and games using Harappan motifs and designs, that could also have been played by children 5,000 years ago.
At the pottery demo, children can take a look around the pre- and proto-History Gallery and try their hand at recreating some of the Harappan pottery under the guidance of a pottery artist.
To understand ancient seals and scripts to solve the unsolved mystery of the Indus script and what was the role played by language in their cultures, an expert from Tata Institute will be there help kids. A tactile tour has also been arranged for a group of visually handicapped children associated with the NGO ‘Anam Prem’ working for underprivileged children. The children will be given a tour of the Museum galleries along with tactile experiences and audio descriptions.
On May 18 to mark International Museum Day, a plethora of craft activities have been organised at the Anand Craft Mela.
