The advances in medical
technology have helped in increasing the average lifespan of an
individual through the early diagnosis and treatment of various medical
conditions. Arthritis is one such condition that has shown a rise, both
in the reported incidences and its treatment options. It is a form of
joint disorder that involves swelling of joints and pain. The most common
form is osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that can affect
any joint, but in the Indian context, it is more common to knee joints.
Patients may find their problem gradually progressing over a period of
time, with knee pain interfering with their daily activities. In such
situations, Total Knee Replacement surgery offers a complete cure.
Today, some knee designs claim their state of art technology and
materials provide long-lasting knee implants up to 30 years merely based
on lab-tested results. However, the true success of a knee system
depends on its actual clinical use on a patient. Dr C J Thakkar,
joint replacement surgeon, Breach candy, Lilavati and Hinduja Health
Care Surgicals, says, “Total knee replacement is by far one of the most
successful procedures in modern day medicine. Both the patient and
surgeon expect excellent outcomes in terms of results and survivorship.
Recently , a study was conducted on 22691 patients in England and
Wales. This focused on the improvement in quality of life of patients
after knee replacement surgery . The study confirmed improved
satisfaction level of patients and helped identify one of the best
implant designs in the industry, which is the NexGen knee. Also, the use
navigation systems that assist in proper alignment of the implant has
gained popularity these days. I am amongst the first surgeons to
introduce navigation in India in 2003. Navigation, when coupled with
gender specific knee, gives better range of movements to ladies who want
to squat and sit cross legged.“
Dr Sanjay Agarwala, Director, Professional Services, Chief Of Surgery, HeadOrthopedics & Traumatology, Hinduja Hospital, tells us, “The success of a knee replacement lies in the implant design with a long clinical history and use on patients. Extending on the science of NexGen and the legacy of clinically proven designs with 25 years of successful results, the Persona knee system was developed and perfected over a period of five years by scientists and engineers in active consultation with leading orthopaedic surgeons from across the world, with successful implantation of more than 100,000 knees globally . This system replicates the natural knee joint and takes into account patient's size, shape, gender, ethnicity and stature. The precision of this system allows me to offer each of my patients a personalised fit and gives them a natural feel.“
According to Dr DD Tanna, joint replacement surgeon, Jaslok Hospital, Saiffee Hospital, Bhatia Hospital, Mumbai, “With the patient undergoing total knee replacement becoming younger and better informed, the demands on the artificial knee have increased. The patient expects to feel normal and lead a normal active life. In an effort to achieve this, the Persona knee system was conceptualised. It caters to the current gaps in existing knee systems.“
He further adds that with this system, he has a large range of sizing options to choose from that allows a nearly perfect fit. The implant fits smoothly , gives a natural range of motion and the patients do not feel that an implant has been put in their body .
Getting a precise fit is the key to patient's comfort and overall experience. The Persona knee system promises the right fit for nearly every knee.

Tips for those with arthritis

One of the most common ail
ments that elders suffer from is arthritis. Swelling in joints and
acute pain are some of its characteristics, making it difficult for the
person to even perform normal activities. Here are some points to keep
in mind so that people with arthritis don't strain their joints much:
Never put pressure on any one particular joint. For instance, if you are
pushing the cupboard to another place or opening a door, make sure you
use both your hands or knees to do the same.Spreading the strain equally
on all joints will ease out the pain.
Don't sit in the same position for longer hours. Take a small
break in between, go for a short walk in the open or pace the length of
the room. Once you form a pattern, stick to it.
Leading a sedentary lifestyle is not advisable for people with arthritis.Activities are not harmful, you just need to do them wisely. Push, slide or shove things instead of lifting them. Use your palms to hold things, use your side to push heavy items instead of your thigh or knees.
Restrict bending.Organise your house in such a way that you can reach the items you need by just extending your hand. Bending down unnecessarily will cause excess strain to the joints. In case you have to bend down, keep your back straight to even the pressure.
