There might be times when you just can’t fit in a spa session in your hectic schedule. And then there are times when you want to pamper yourself but might not want to pay a bomb for fancy services. Here’s good news for you. Maintaining oneself need not necessarily translate into spending big bucks. Just walk into your kitchen, grab your ingredients and get started for a pretty you!

OILY SKIN:

Finding a skincare regime that does not leave your skin dry and stretched or send your sebaceous glands in an overdrive is a challenge every oily-skinned girl faces. Oily skin shines brighter than the glow signs, which is why most girls refrain from using moisturisers. This, however, just compounds the problem. Oily skin also attracts dust and clogged pores. Here are some easy ways for respite...

EGG WHITE MASK Why egg whites: Egg whites are a great source of protein, which is why they can be used to heal, reduce and treat acne. They have astringentlike properties and improve the skin’s elasticity, thus tightening pores. They soak up excessive oil with their high levels of protein but do not leave the skin feeling dry and stretched. A nightmarish problem for every oilyskinned girl.
PROCEDURE: • Beat the egg white with one-teaspoon lemon juice.
• Apply it on a clean, dry face. Keep the mask on for 10 to 15 minutes or until it dries up.
• Do not talk, eat or move your mouth with the face pack on.
• Once the mask is dry and starts cracking, wash it off with warm water.

ASPIRIN MASK Why aspirin: It has anti-inflammatory properties. Aspirin works as a great scrub and removes dead skin cells without being harsh. Works very well on oily, acne-ridden, inflamed skin.
PROCEDURE: • Make a fine powder of four uncoated
aspirin pills.
• Add a little water to get a paste-like consistency. You can also add a little yogurt or cream if you feel the mask is too drying.
• Apply on a clean, dry face. Be careful to avoid the eyes and nostrils.
• Leave it on for 10 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water.

DRY SKIN:

Dry skin can look awful, since it tends to flake, inflame and wrinkle easily. It also ages faster. These face packs will surely work wonders in keeping skin moisturised and hydrated.

AVOCADO MASK Why avocado: With its healthy fats and phytonutrients, avocados are great for moisturising dry skin and hair. They are full of monounsaturated fat and antioxidants and help soothe skin, reduce inflammation and tissue damage.
PROCEDURE: • Crush half an avocado into a fine pulp.
• Add one tablespoon honey for cleansing and a little plain yoghurt if you want to soothe irritated skin. Also add quarter cup virgin olive oil.
• Apply the mixture to your neck and face and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes.
• Wash off with lukewarm water.

BANANA MASK Why banana: That they help in soothing inflamed skin is well known. Bananas also work well in treating acne and blemishes. It also softens skin since it has a high level of potassium.
PROCEDURE: • Peel a banana and mash it to get a thick paste.
• Add two tablespoons of honey and apply the paste to clean, dry skin.
• Leave it on for 10 to 20 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water.

DULL SKIN:

Stressed and hectic lifestyles, pollution, an unbalanced and unhealthy diet are just some of the reasons why skin looks lacklustre. Try these pick-me-up masks and banish sallow skin.

PAPAYA MASK Why papaya: The concentrated levels of vitamin A in papaya make it rich in antioxidants which help in fighting free radicals. Papaya also works as a gentle exfoliator since it removes dead skin.
PROCEDURE: • Peel a papaya, deseed it and cut it into small pieces.
• Add quarter cup honey and use a blender to get a fine paste.
• Apply the mix on clean, dry skin, avoiding the eye area.
• Wash off with lukewarm water after 10 to 15 minutes.

LEMON JUICE AND SEA SALT MASK Why lemon juice and sea salt: This makes for a great invigorating mask. Sea salt works well in sloughing off dead skin cells as it is a natural detoxifier while lemon works as a bleaching agent. Lemon lightens scars and blemishes. With its anti-septic properties, it also clears dirt and bacteria thus preventing pimples and breakouts.
PROCEDURE: • Mix a quarter cup of sea salt with a little lemon juice.
• Apply all over the face and neck in gentle, circular motions.

OATMEAL FACIAL Why oatmeal: Oatmeal has the best amino acid balance from all the grains. It is hypoallergenic and thus can be used by people with sensitive skin. It heals rashes, soothes irritated skin and treats acne, eczema and rosacea. It works well as a natural, gentle exfoliator.
PROCEDURE:
• Mix two tablespoons raw, unflavoured oatmeal with one-cup whole milk.
• Heat them till you get a thick paste-like consistency. Take it off the flame and add two tablespoons olive oil to the concoction.
• When the mixture’s warm to the touch, apply it on your face.
• Wash it off with lukewarm water aft 20 to 30 minutes.
