There was a time when we did not have laser printers or even ink-jet
printers. All we had were dot-matrix printers, which would print
everything in dots. There were also some printers called daisy-wheels,
which worked in a manner similar to the typewriter by printing
characters. Then some artists figured out a way of making art using
these dots, and the characters of the keyboard. Later in the world of
computers, this came to be called ASCII Art.
Even our most commonly used geek symbol, the smiley, is descended
from the ASCII Art combination of a colon, a dash and a bracket :-) .
