Wearing it right
Shows you how to make jewellery work for you
It’s no secret that jewellery can instantly transform your look. At the same time, it’s important to remember that you are wearing the jewellery—and not the other way around. Use your jewellery to emphasise your best features and compliment your skin tone, body type and facial cut. Explains jewellery designer Resham Khubchandani, “Most people forget that jewellery is more than a static ornament. Choose pieces that don’t just look good by themselves, but look good on you in terms of design, colour and style.”EFFECTIVE EMPHASIS Use the magic of jewellery to draw attention to your best features. In the same vein, avoid ornamenting parts of yourself which aren’t your best. “Jewellery draws the eye of the observer to itself, and the area where it is placed,” explains Khubchandani. List out your three best features—and look for jewelled pieces that compliment them. Women who have long lustrous hair can opt for bejewelled hair combs. If you have a lovely neck, don a gorgeous choker necklace. If you want to emphasise your collar bones, opt for an eye-catching neckpiece with a drop.
BODY TYPE Your height, body type and facial cut are all important parameters in determining what jewellery will look best on you. “If you are petite, you should use jewellery to your advantage to create an illusion of length. Hence, wear dangling earrings or necklaces that fall below the bust line but above the waist. It is wise to steer clear of single large pieces which may look overwhelming on your tiny frame. So if you’re wearing bangles, wear several narrow bangles rather than one massive bangle,” advices stylist Ruchika Singh. You would want to avoid U-shaped necklaces that end above the bust, as these will make you look shorter. If you’ve been blessed with goof height, work it to your advantage by opting for large, chunky pieces that make a statement. “Large beads and thick bracelets, for example, will look fabulous. Avoid jewellery that’s very fine or intricate. Very small studs are also lost on a tall woman,” suggests Singh.
FACIAL STRUCTURE
Consider your facial shape and cut as well, to determine what earrings and necklaces will suit you best. For those with a round face, select jewellery which will help balance the roundness. Instead of chokers and high necklaces, opt for long necklaces with a V-shaped design. Dangling earrings are ideal. If you have a square-shaped facial structure, steer clear of button studs or wide designs. Instead, put on a pair of gorgeous hoops which add softness to your angular cut. Those with a heartshaped face should wear long earrings to lengthen their face. A choker or short necklace will help smoothen the angle of the chin. For an oval face, wearing a pair of snazzy angular earrings with be most appropriate.
