READY TO LOOK LIKE A CHIC WINTER BRIDE?
If your big day is coming this season, prep your look with statements pieces, exuberant colours and unique embellishments
There’s a new bride out there, especially for the upcoming winter season. If you too are one of those tying the knot in the coming months, be prepared to put in a little extra thought into the ensembles you put together. For not only is it important for you to look stunning on your big day, but during the winter months, it is also important for you to feel comfortable. Talking about the kind of looks that are in for today’s brides, designer Narendra Kumar says, “You’re looking at someone who is welltravelled, who knows what’s happening on catwalks, and who wants destination weddings. She likes clothes which are visually appealing yet strong. It’s a radical change — there is a sense of tradition mixed with modernity.”
Adds Anjalee of Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor, “The bride today is a modern woman, a diva, who likes lavish lehengas and corsets. The look for this, for us, includes statement pieces, lehengas and anarkalis that are closely fitted with voluminous bottoms.” Adds designer Azeem Khan, “Dreamy, romantic and luxuriant is the look for brides, and it spells glamour, class, elegance and style. Fine details are of strategic importance right now.”
LAYERS ARE IN The multi-layered velvet outfit with brocade has company. Designers Falguni and Shane Peacock have added feathers, power shoulders and fishtail lehengas to their collection. “We’ve tried edgier shoulders for blouses and feathers, which add panache.” Designer Lina Tipnis adds that the trail lehenga is in vogue too. “It’s all about the layered look for lehengas so that you can add flounce and volume. You have tulle l ayering, finished with ornate velvet and brocade trims with intricate zardozi motifs that give the classic lehenga a modern twist.”
COLOURS For designer Maheka Mirpuri, the upcoming bridal season is all about a celebration of energy. “The colours for this season are different from the usual — like hot pink sharara that replaces the usual sober pink. I’d go with a spectrum of hues like burnt orange, rich midnight blues, lime green, brick red, deep jewel tones, lavender and aubergine and fuchsia and orange,” she says.
EMBELLISHMENTS Adds Khan, “The current trend seems to be partial towards chunky crystals and real zari. Use of indigenously created sequins has made them fashionable this season but they should not be overdone. Crystals in combination with tiny florets look very alluring, feminine and elegant at the same time. Semi precious stones like jade, garnet, opal and turquoise are used to add glam to bridal ensembles this season. Other embellishments include Chinese silk threads, metal gold chains and caviar beads. The garments are definitely more glam but the mood is classic and elegant.”
Anjalee also votes for bejewelled lehengas replete with hand-picked embellishments. “A great idea is to have zardozi against a burnt red velvet background draped over numerous layers of lush satin lining and banarasi brocade borders, as well as anarkalis with delicate lace arms and specks of crystal.”
