What Recession? Jewellery Buyers Binge on Dassera

What Recession?

Jewellery Buyers Binge on Dassera

Dassera’s around the corner and jewellery buffs are all set to indulge once again. The Hindu festival marking the victory of good over evil is considered a very auspicious day for purchases. Buying gold and silver, in particular, on day is said to usher prosperity into one’s home. So, recession apart, there’s little scope for penny-pinching on the occasion.
The fiscal slowdown doesn’t seem to have made a dent to the jewellery buyer’s spirits as they have been thronging local and branded shops to book for makes to their heart’s desire particularly on the occasion. “Dassera is a very auspicious day among Hindus much like Diwali and Gudi Padwa. And, even though we may not have registered as much gold and silver sales through the year, sales counters are beginning to
register a steady rise as we approach the festive season. Buyers save up for days like Dassera to shop for jewellery,” says Silver House proprietor Hasmukh Shah.
And then, stores across the city have something for everyone. Right from a tiny silver nose-ring for as less as Rs 200 as a symbolic purchase for one to a gold necklace that may cost as high as Rs 4.5 lakh, outlets provide a range for every buyer.
Apart from personal jewellery, gold and silver artefacts too are in demand during this auspicious period. The devout tend to buy fancy showpieces or murtis to gift their friends or for gifting within their corporate circles.
“We have regular buyers who’d purchase jewellery for nothing less than a few lakhs of rupees and the walk-in customers during this period who would opt for a symbolic purchase of a few thousand rupees. We have to ensure we have something to cater to everyone’s needs,” says Shah whose outlet offers gold, silver and diamond makes tailormade for the festive occasion.
So, before the celebrations starts, almost every jewellery store stocks up on the latest and trendiest makes as this is one of the occasions that
shoppers look forward to make gold/silver purchase.
Utility products like a silver dinner-set or display items like murtis are in great
demand, this Dassera. Buyers tend to opt for Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Krishna’s murtis that cost anywhere from a couple of thousand rupees to few lakhs of rupees.
“We placed an order especially for Dassera for three handmade Lord Krishna murtis from down South that cost Rs 7,51,000 each since there are buyers who drop in looking for such exclusive products in the similar price range. Incidentally, it takes around four months for karigars to create this murti out of 22 Carat pure gold,” says jewellery shop owner
Kunal Shah. Apart from gift articles, ‘one-of-a-sort’ necklaces and other jewellery items too are in demand. Buyers tend to save dearly and wait for occasions like Dassera to make their choicest jewellery purchase. So, when it’s time to indulge, they look for that exclusive one. “A Rudraksh gold necklace created especially for this festive season is sure to grab eyeballs. I expect a few discreet buyers to grab it although it costs Rs 4 lakh,” adds Kunal Shah.
So, whether it’s a fast-selling trendy jewellery item or a corporate gift article in silver, this Dassera is sure to mark a hike in the sale of gold and silver. For now, recession will take a back seat. Happy Dassera!
