How to Combat arthritis now?

How to Combat arthritis now?

Almost all of us have witnessed some family member or relative suffering from a condition where the pain is literally crippling. With tomorrow, October 12, 2012 being World Arthritis Day, this is an apt occasion to gain more awareness of the aspects that influence it as well as some of the steps that can be taken towards prevention.
Arthritis is a serious health condition, but it can be treated or possibly prevented. The Arthritis Foundation points out that many of the habits that are recommended for a healthy lifestyle play a role in preventing some types of arthritis and related conditions. There are several tips recommended for Arthritis prevention. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet to help maintain your recommended weight. Especially women who are overweight have a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis in the knees. They should talk to their doctor about taking vitamin and mineral supplements. Having insufficient levels of vitamin D decreases the amount of calcium the body can absorb. That coupled with lower calcium levels as one ages can help contribute to osteoporosis.
It is essential to exercise regularly to strengthen muscles around joints and help increase bone density. Exercise may reduce wear and tear on your joints, which can help prevent injury and reduce the risk of osteoarthritis. Increased bone density also can help stave off osteoporosis. Avoid smoking and limit your alcohol consumption to help avoid osteoporosis. Both habits weaken the structure of bone, which puts you at higher risk for fractures.
While the quantity o food that you consume plays a key role, it is also important to monitor what you eat. Experts like Matthew Kadey advise reducing the intake of sugar, processed foods and saturated fat. Instead, get plenty of fruits, vegetables and lean protein like nuts, seeds and beans. Try adding more arthritis-friendly foods that have anti-inflammatory properties to your diet. It is said that green tea may reduce inflammation and slow cartilage breakdown. Studies suggest those benefits from its polyphenols, which is a type of antioxidant. Broccoli is another food item that gets a big thumbs up. Laboratory studies have found that sulforaphane, a compound in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, may block enzymes linked to joint destruction and inhibit inflammation. Broccoli is abundant in vitamin K, which in high amounts may slow the progression of osteoarthritis.
