AntiRetroviral Therapy (ART)
Thane has been declared HIV/AIDS sensitive
zone. However, in recent years, the district
has seen a fall in the number of AIDS cases
reported here. This decline has come due to
the efforts of the Thane Civil Hospital. The
figures with TCH's Integrated Counselling
and Testing Centre (ICTC) illustrate this success
story.
From January. 2012, to October, 2012, of
71,900 people tested, 3,019 were tested
positive. While in the corresponding period,
last year, of 70, 661 patients tested, 3,422
tested positive.
The antiretroviral therapy (ART) provided
by the civil hospital has played a key
role in controlling spread of the disease
between 2007 and 2012. Of the 17,337 HIV
positive patients who opted for the treatment
during this period, 6,041 are doing
well and are off medicines. While, 10,439
are still taking the medicines and 1,172
have died.
