JENNA MENARD, GLOBAL COLOUR ARTIST, CLINIQUE, RECOMMENDS A BOLD COLOUR PALETTE FOR THE ONCOMING WAVE OF CELEBRATIONS

WHAT, ACCORDING TO YOU, ARE THE COMMON MAKEUP MISTAKES THAT INDIAN WOMEN MAKE? This is not so much of a mistake, but something that a lot of women struggle with — they are afraid to experiment. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with your makeup. I recommend that you should try something slightly different everyday. If you are used to using only beige/champagne/nude powder eye shadow colours, try a subtle shade in a different texture. This small change will make a big difference to your look.
WHAT ARE THE NEW TRENDS WE CAN LOOK FORWARD TO IN MAKEUP? I love bright shades in general. You can incorporate bright colours in your eye, face and lip makeup. Bright and bold shades are very modern. Corals look great on all skin colours — they can be worn as a precise lip look or blotted down as a lip stain. For the matte, bold lip, use a long-lasting lipstick, blot with one ply of tissue and repeat. For fall, many of the looks I’ve created focus on the eyebrows. It started with the Karen Walker Fall 2012 show back in September and ever since, I have featured a variety of brow looks in many shoots. A strong brow is a simple and clean way to make a statement this fall.

WHAT ARE THE LATEST COLOUR TRENDS? Pastel shades in eye makeup are easy to wear and extremely versatile. Lighter pastel shades work well when paired with a shade that is darker — try setting off a pastel shadow with a more intense liner or a bold lash look. I also enjoy using pastels and tonal colours. For example, try a pale mint green shadow with a moss green liner or a violet shadow with a deep plum liner.

SHARE WITH US YOUR GROOMING REGIMEN. I travel constantly and this usually involves exposing my skin to various climate changes throughout the year and of course, endless hours on
planes — not the best combination for your skin. Flying a lot can easily take a toll on any skin, but I always drink lots of water and apply a moisturiser before long flights to keep my skin hydrated.
I also cleanse, exfoliate, moisturise and always remove my makeup before going to bed.
Being in tune with my body is so important, but it can be hard as I am on my feet constantly, travelling frequently and working long hours. I’ve found that acupuncture helps me on so many levels. It brings about awareness of the body and mind and keeps everything on track.
It’s also important for me to stay active whether it’s running, biking, or doing yoga with a friend. I’ve been introduced to the Nike Training Club App. These workouts are ideal for someone, like me, who is always on-the-go. It’s like having a personal trainer at my fingertips, around the clock. Even if I only have 30 minutes, I can get in an intense workout so that I have more energy throughout the day.

DO YOU HAVE ANY BEAUTY TIPS AND TRICKS YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS? Whether you’ve just woken up, are at work or getting ready for a night out, you need to be confident. Beauty starts from within — the makeup, products and colours are all a bonus and can help you accentuate your beauty in many different ways and on many different levels.
I think it’s very important to break away from the ‘routine.’ Try new things once in a while and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Confidence also allows you to wear makeup that you might not usually wear. The first time you try a new bold lip colour or smoky eyes, be sure to wear it with certainty – it will empower you to continue experimenting with your makeup. Also, trying new things doesn’t always have to be dramatic; subtleties can certainly impact enough change to make makeup exciting. Throughout this process, you will realise how versatile your face can be.
