Special outfits for diwali

Go bright this Diwali
Diwali is round the corner and people are busy decorating their homes, buying gifts and making mithais. But these preparations for the big day are incomplete without that special outfit which will set you apart. DNA speaks to fashion designers in the city who will help you choose that perfect dress.

Bright colours which lift your spirits are in trend this season. Be it salwar kameez or sarees, colours like fuchsia pink, orange and royal blue are what you need to choose . “The monochrome look is out and everything bright is in,” says Meera Sanyal from Soiee Sutra, Thane.

So don’t hesitate to pick up dresses in neon colour for fear being booed by the fashion police. “You can team different colours. Say, an orange kurta with a fuchsia pink border and dupatta. And the salwar can be royal blue. The trick is to have contrasting colours which compliment each other,” says Sanyal.

In dresses, Anarkali is the hot favourite among women across age groups, shapes and sizes. “Tall women can opt for floor length anarkalis. Petite women should go for knee or ankle length anarkalis with less kalis,” says another designer.

“Fabrics with good fall like georgette or chiffon are ideal for both tall and short women. They make tall women look fuller and fuller women look lean. Brocade with kundan and pearl laces make the kurtas look appealing while a velvet bodice makes it look rich,” she says.

Thanks to the movie Ishaqzade, the koti or shrug and salwar kurta with a jacket is the trend this season. “The koti pattern is in and looks cool on anarkalis and kurtas. You can also wear a collared jacket of the same length of your kurta. You can also wear short kurtas without a slit on dhoti pants and patiala which will lend you a stylish look,” says Sanyal. “Even a brocade sherwani with crystal work is much preferred,” she adds.
