The causes of snoring Snoring may occur due to physical obstruction in the nose or the airway in the back of the throat. The tissues in the back of the throat (the soft palate, uvula, tonsils, back of the tongue) lose their tone during sleep. Laser shots are given on the structures at the back of the throat (uvula, soft palate, tonsillar pillars, base of the tongue). The laser helps in increasing the tone of the lax tissue. It also promotes growth of collagen underneath the tissue, which further helps in reducing the vibrations while breathing during sleep. Says Dr Abhijit Desai, cosmetic dermatologist and laser specialist, “The laser procedure is completely painless and takes about 20 minutes. No anaesthesia is required and results may be seen from the first day itself and they are enhanced over the following week. The treatment consists of three sessions of 20 minutes each. The duration between the first two sessions is two weeks and the third session is conducted one month after the second session.” Permanent solution? Snoring may be attributed to a single cause or multiple causes.
