A new laser treatment promises relief from sleepless nights for him and her

You’ve probably heard that some marriages break up in the bedroom. One of the problems in the bedroom can also be a snoring spouse. Yes, it is a huge contributing factor. And if that is your problem in the boudoir then help is at hand. A new laser treatment can permanently end the snoring. It is a painless and an non-invasive procedure, or one that requires no hospitalisation.

The causes of snoring
Snoring may occur due to physical obstruction in the nose or the airway in the back of the throat. The tissues in the back of the throat (the soft palate, uvula, tonsils, back of the tongue) lose their tone during sleep. While sleeping on the back, gravity pulls the palate, tonsils, and tongue backwards. This narrows the airway enough to cause turbulence in airflow, tissue vibration, and snoring.

Help is at hand
A new form of treatment is laser assisted tightening. A fractional erbium laser is used for the reduction of snoring. Laser shots are given on the structures at the back of the throat (uvula, soft palate, tonsillar pillars, base of the tongue). The laser helps in increasing the tone of the lax tissue. It also promotes growth of collagen underneath the tissue, which further helps in reducing the vibrations while breathing during sleep. Says Dr Abhijit Desai, cosmetic dermatologist and laser specialist, “The laser procedure is completely painless and takes about 20 minutes. No anaesthesia is required and results may be seen from the first day itself and they are enhanced over the following week. The treatment consists of three sessions of 20 minutes each. The duration between the first two sessions is two weeks and the third session is conducted one month after the second session.”

Permanent solution?
Snoring may be attributed to a single cause or multiple causes. Says Dr Desai, “Depending upon the causes and the extent of snoring, laser treatment may minimise or even completely stop the snoring.”
