City celebrates Guru Nanak Jayanti with prabhat pheri, shabad kirtan and langar





Orderly queues gathered at gurdwaras and langars as the Sikh community celebrated the 545th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak on Thursday. Gurupurab is celebrated on the full moon night of Kartik Purnima.
Gurupurab is a community celebration at gurdwaras where night-long shabad kirtans are organized as the seer was born at midnight. Little takes place at home, although a few devotees organize Akhand Path, the continuous recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib.
The largest gathering in the city takes place at Garodia Nagar ground in Ghatkopar. “The thousands of people who arrived for kirtan and langar were squeezed for space this year since the BMC is building a theme park on the site,” said Jony Singh, son of BJP leader Sardar Tara Singh.
Sindhis celebrate Gurupurab in a grand way as well. In Andheri, the Samarth Nagar Lokhandwala Sindhi Panchayat led a prabhat pheri at 5.30am.
“We invited film maker Pahlaj Nihalani. The procession went around Shastri Nagar, Highland Park and Green Acres,” said Lal Khatri, president of the association. On Thursday night, the panchayat hosted a langar for 5,000 people with Sindhi delicacies, on the menu.
Meanwhile, nagar kirtans continued in Ghatkopar, Dadar and Sion.
“The Guru Granth Sahib was placed in the lead vehicle and hundreds follow on foot singing kirtans,” said Bhai Prem Singh of Dashmesh Darbar, GTB Nagar.
In Bhayander, Saraswati Nagar gurdwara completed its recitation of the Akhand Path but will celebrate Gurupurab on November 9, so more people can join. “We will serve pav bhaji in the morning and langar at night,” said sevadar Bhai Rajinder Singh.
