SECRETS OF RAISING A HAPPY CHILD
Simple ways to ensure that your kid grows up to be a content person
Ask any parent what they
want for their child, and the unanimous answer would be : `Happiness!'
However that's one factor that cannot be controlled. A recent research
states that happiness can be inherited, which means that parents have a
hand in ensuring the child grows up to be a happy child. Here are some
things that they should keep in mind while raising their kids:
MAKING HAPPY KIDS
Happy children with positive thinking are a product of happy homes. Chemicals like endorphins that the brain generates affects the germ cells -the sperm and eggs, and this, in the process, affects the nature and temperament of the unborn child. Your state of mind -depression or happiness -makes an impact on the child during conception. Says gynaecologist Dr Abhishek Sawant, “When couples are happy , the possibility of conception are high. A woman should always try to keep herself in good mood during pregnancy as a happy state of mind makes happy kids.“
STAY CONNECTED WITH YOUR KIDS
For your child's lifelong emotional wellbeing, it is important that there is a close bond in the family . In fact, heshe should be taught to connect with all the members in the house, including grandparents, cousins, friends, neighbours, domestic helps and pets. Spend as much time as pos sible with your kids and give them unconditional love. Hug your children, hold them and appreciate them for their achievements. Encourage them to socialise. The more connections your child makes, the better it is for his development.
HAPPY PARENTS RAISE HAPPY KIDS
It is important for parents to have a healthy, understanding relationship because it affects the psyche of their children. “It is not just about a parent's rela tionship with the child anymore. It is also about how happy the mother and the father are together as a couple. The responsibility of parenting should be shared so that nobody feels the pressure,“ says child psychologist Dr Suranjana Nath.
If parents are happy with each other, the child's happiness automatically follows.Psychologist Varkha Chulani says, “A happy home makes for happy people. Environment plays a great role in the well being of people. So, if you have people who are spirited, enthusiastic and alive, the chances of a happy home atmosphere increases.“
She adds further, “If I am not a happy person, I cannot be a happy parent. A parent is an individual first. Heshe then takes over the roles of a parent, provider, caretaker, etc.So, if you are a grouch, insipid, washed out and depressed, what kind of milieu do you think you would create for your child?“
TEACH THEM TO BE THANKFUL FOR LITTLE THINGS
Gratitude is cultivated. It is very important for one's emotional well-being. Being thankful for all that you have makes you a happy and positive person. If a child grows up to believe that he should be thankful and appreciate what he has, then half the battle is won. “Parents can follow a gratitude journal and encourage their children to do the same,“ adds Dr Nath.
